See if this ranking of the Evening Broadcast News sounds familiar: NBC #1, ABC #2 and CBS #3. After the initial sampling has worn off, it seems Katie Couric’s edition of the Evening News has slipped into third place. To wit–for the week of October 2-6, 2,006:

The second season premiere episodes of TLC’s Little People, Big World on October 7 (8p and 830p) delivered 857,000 A18-49 viewers which represents a 24% over last year’s premiere. The show is produced by Gay Rosenthal Productions for TLC.
The Travel Channel will debut season three of 5 Takes on October 28 at 10p, with the focus this season being USA destinations. The five Travel Journalists hosting this season are all from Asia-Pacific, with some visiting the U.S. for the first time. Their 8-week journey will take them to Las Vegas, Anchorage, Washington, D.C., Orlando and Miami, Memphis, New York City, Austin, Los Angeles and San Francisco. Additionally, 5 Takes will broadcast on Discovery Travel & Living in Asia-Pacific to 100 million viewers starting next month. 5 Takes is produced by Rosenblum Associates for the Travel Channel.
Direct TV is bulking up on its HD markets with the addition of 25 new ones by the end of the year. That brings the total DirecTV HD markets up to 67, representing 74% of the US. New markets including Buffalo, Little Rock, New Orleans, Providence, Spokane, Santa Barbara, and Toledo among others.
After two full days at my first MIPCOM 2006 here in Cannes, I have learned a few things:
- It’s a Stand – not a Booth
- It’s a Market – not a Conference
- It’s a Congress – not a Convention
- Amazingly, most local people can instantaneously switch from French to English as soon as they hear you say, “Hi!” It also seems true that the more you need them to speak English, the less likely they will.
- If you’re looking lost on the MIPCOM floor, and some nice young girl with INFORMATION printed on her shirt says she can help – decline. It’s been my experience she’ll walk you around a bit, put you in an elevator, say Voila!, and once the elevator doors open again, you’ll be standing outside the building.
- Never plug your hair dryer into the wrong type of outlet converter – it will fry the insides and you’ll have bad hair all week.
- For friends and family, shop at the Monoprix (aka France’s Target). Don’t worry, the folks back home will never know.
- Whether you’re at a Market or a Conference, karaoke is never a good idea.
- Take a few minutes before your dinner to go down to the beach, slip off your shoes and stick your foreign toes in the Riviera. Now you can say you did.

PBS will now have many of its documentary specials as well as primetime and children’s programming available for download on the iTunes Store. Each episode is priced from $1.99 each and the primetime series include Antiques Roadshow, Nova, Now and Scientific American Frontiers; the PBS Kids and PBS Kids Go! shows include Arthur, Cyberchase and Fetch!.
The broadband channel HGTV KitchenDesign will launch its first two original video series focused on the kitchen to tie in with October Kitchen and Bath Month. 8 Fresh Ideas for Kitchen Backsplashes and Getting Started – 10 Steps to a New Kitchen will both be available in full at www.HGTVKitchenDesign.com starting the week of October 16.
VOY LLC, the digital media company delivering content for the English-speaking Latino community, has launched the new broadband channel, VOY TV (www.voytv.com). Combining acquired original programming, licensed content and user-generated video, VOY TV aims to be an entertainment destination for Latino audiences. VOY TV has a library of thousands of videos arranged in a variety of user-generated and premium channels, and users can also share video clips, add blogs and meet other Latinos with the same interests. In upcoming months, the network plans to add more original programming.
Telemundo will premiere its new original primetime telenovela production Marina on www.yahootelemundo.com/Marina at 12p on October 12, four days prior to the broadcast premiere on October 16. The online telecast will be subtitled in English for bilingual audiences.
Comedian Jim Gaffigan will launch a series of webisodes called Pale Force on NBC.com, but first will debut the webisodes on Late Night with Conan O’Brien. Gaffigan’s super hero cartoon was originally introduced on Conan back in September last year. The super hero’s skinny little sidekick is named Conan O’Brien. Pale Force will launch the first of 20 new episodes on the website Friday, and updated weekly.
If you were one of those young girls who wish they could jump over buildings and hear stuff a half mile away just like the Bionic Woman, then you’ll be happy to know she’s on her way back. NBC Universal TV Studio have the re-do in development with exec producer David Eick and writer Laeta Kalogridis on board. Word is the project will be using the original Bionic Woman storyline as a jumping off place, calling the new show a “reconceptualization” of the original.
Variety reports a new project for HBO and Doug Ellin, co-creator of Entourage. The new project described as the cast from Entourage grows up and gets jobs on Wall Street.
CBS has ordered a medical drama pilot from Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith. According to Hollywood Reporter, the storyline is set at the Center for Disease Control, and follows the doctor and researchers as they work to stem disease in all areas of the world. The untitled pilot will be written by Jan Nash and Jennifer Levin.
Chad Lowe will have a recurring role on Fox’s series 24, set to return to primetime in January. He will play a White House based politician, and will appear several episodes into the season.

Dirk Hoogstra has been bumped to VP/Development at TLC to supervise the development of original programming. He will also manage TLC’s development team and create and implement programming strategies on behalf of the network. To fill Dirk’s former position, TLC has hired Marissa Ronca as Director/Program Development. She will oversee the development of original programming for daytime and primetime series and specials for TLC and Discovery Home Channel.

Monday – A18-49 Analysis: CBS won by a narrow margin Monday night with 4.8/12 A18-49, according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research. NBC was close in second place at 4.7/12, followed by ABC 3.1/8, UNIV 1.6/4, FOX 1.3/3, CW 1.0/3 and TELE 0.4/1. NBC closed out the competition at 8p with Deal or No Deal delivering a 4.4/12. Holding the lead at 9p, NBC was #1 with Heroes at 5.9/14, followed by the CBS comedies Two and a Half Men/Old Christine averaging a 4.9/12. CBS succeeded in winning the 10p hour with CSI: Miami at 5.9/15, with NBC’s Studio 60 in second at 3.8/9 and the return premiere of ABC’s What About Brian? in third at 3.0/8.

1779: Polish nobleman Casimir Pulaski dies of wounds received at the Battle of Savannah, Georgia during the American Revolution. Commanding a detachment of cavalry in the Continental Army, Pulaski charged into the battle hoping to reinforce a detachment of French infantry and received his fatal wound. The Congress ordered a monument in his honor, which was finally built in Washington in 1910.
