Cyn opsis: Kids!

10/11/06

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, October 11, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

Australian producer Yoram Gross-EM.TV has taken on a new identity, Flying Bark Productions.  The re-branding move comes following EM.Entertainment GmbH’s acquisition of the remaining 50% of Yoram Gross-EM.TV earlier this year.  The Sydney Australia based Flying Bark Productions is comprised of four divisions that will include both kids’ animation and puppetry programming and adult targeted live-action programs and films:

  • Greenpatch Productions is designed to be the creative core of Flying Bark, and will continue to develop Australian programming. This division is Australian owned and controlled with 55% owned by Australian shareholders, including some of its creative employees and 45% by Flying Bark Productions.
  • Forest Interactive is the multimedia unit, which will focus on developing new content delivery platforms and interactive games.  Forthcoming is the group’s announcement of its partner for MobiStax, a mobile trading card platform.
  • Trackdown Digital offers complete audio production services for film/TV/multimedia/music scoring for in-house Flying Bark and outside productions.  It features a digital recording studio, housed at Flying Bark, and a scoring stage based at the Australia’s Entertainment Quarter.  Trackdown is 51% owned by Flying Bark Productions, with Australian film industry music professionals holding the remaining 49%.
  • Flying Bark Distributions is a production services and distribution division that will focus on producing international kid’s programming content, including animation.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Marvel Studios has cast Terrence Howard in its live-action feature film Iron Man.  Howard will play Jim “Rhodey” Rhodes, a military pilot and best friend of Tony Stark, aka Iron Man.  The movie will be directed by Jon Favreau and also stars Robert Downey Jr. as Stark/Iron Man, a billionaire industrialist and inventor/super hero.  Slated to be released on May 2, 2008, the Iron Man project marks the first theatrical release to be produced independently by Marvel Entertainment.

ValCom, Inc., a US production company, and Digital Animation Media, Ltd., an Irish indie animation company, have entered into a $12 million production deal to produce the feature film The New Zoo Revue, slated to begin production in 2007.  Like the original syndicated TV series, the movie will feature Henrietta Hippo, Freddie the Frog and Charlie the Owl.

MIPCOM/MIPCOM JR.

Big Tent Entertainment has completed a broadcast deal with Nickelodeon’s international channels for the short-form series featuring the character Domo.  Based on Japanese broadcaster NHK’s popular mascot Domo-kun, the Domo short form stop-motion series (26 x 2′) will air on Nickelodeon channels in Europe, Latin America, Australia and New Zealand from 2007.  The Domo segments will be available in 17+ languages.  In March of this year Nickelodeon entered into a deal with NHK affiliate, Domo Production Committee, to co-develop the Domo shorts, which will premiere in the US on the Nicktoons Network in 2007.  The terrestrial rights for the tween-targeted series remain available in a number of territories, with distributor Joan Lambur of Lambur & Associates handling additional and complementary broadcast deals.  Media International Corporation (MICO) is handling sales in Asian territories.

Novel Entertainment, indie producer of kids programming, has appointed Copyright Promotions as its licensing agent for the UK and Europe for its new property Horrid Henry.  Set to premiere this fall on ITV, the TV series is based on the Horrid Henry books written by Francesca Simon and illustrated by Tony Ross, and published by Orion Books, which will retain the publishing rights and the merchandise rights for its products.  Orion Books, which has sold 6+ million copies of the books in the UK to date.  Novel has produced a number of series including Fimbles and The Roly Mo Show.

Nelvana Enterprises deals, games and publishing news:

  • With season two of Di-Gata Defenders (26 new eps, for a total of 52) currently in production, Nelvana has completed new deals for the 2D animated action/adventure series.  The first season of the series (26 eps) has been picked up by TF1 and Nickelodeon in France as well as RAISAT in Italy; all three channels are slated to begin airing the series in fall 2007.
  • Nelvana has inked a development deal with Gamefactory to create an interactive game for K6-12, for Nintendo DS and Sony PSP gaming platforms.  The game deal covers the US, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand and European markets.  Spin Master Ltd, was recently awarded the master toy license for games and accessories based on the series.
  • Nelvana and Sticky Pictures have unveiled their co-production plans for Pearlie, a new animated series, based on the bestselling Pearlie books written by Wendy Harmer, an Australian comedian/radio personality, illustrated by Mike Zarb and published by Random House.  Pearlie revolves around a glamorous, wee fairy who is the official caretaker of downtown Jubilee Park.  Pearlie sets out to organize the park and everyone around her  like it or not.  The series is slated to begin production on 52 x 12′ episode in early 2007.  Developed by Nelvana and Sticky Pictures, Pearlie is being produced for YTV in Canada.  Both Harmer and Zarb, who is also an animator, are involved in the development and production of the series.

Fireworks International is in Cannes as the distributor of the newly-acquired kids’ comedy series Young Dracula (14 x 30′).  Produced by the BBC, Young Dracula is about two boys who just don’t quite fit in, one is rebellious and the other is, well he comes from a family of vampires and he is the only one in the family who isn’t one.

Southern Star International has sold a children’s programming slate to Cartoon Network and Boomerang.  The Adventures of Bottle Top Bill, Faireez and Tracey McBean are some of the titles included in addition to live-action shows Blue Water High, Don’t Blame the Koalas, The Sleepover Club, Snobs and Sweat.

EM.Entertainment has added two new kid-targeted series, My Bedbugs and VIPO, to its distribution roster, which includes free, pay-TV, home entertainment, online and mobile licenses.  Greenstuff Inc. has named EM.Entertainment as the exclusive worldwide distribution rights for the English-language versions of My Bedbugs (5 x 30′ and 42 x 13′) in the US and Canada.  VIPO Land Inc. has tapped EM.Entertainment to distribute its property worldwide, except for the US, UK, Israel and Nigeria, where the rights are distributed non-exclusively.

Fremantle International Distribution has licensed the family drama, Falcon Beach, in quite a few countries, 24 territories to be exact. The most recent to hit the beach and join the list for the 26×60 series (plus the 120-minute pilot) are: Nova TV (Bulgaria), Mega Channel (Greece), Fox Televisjia, TVB (Hong Kong), TVNZ (New Zealand) The Sony Channel (Latin America), and ETV (Sri Lanka).

Animal Planet International has commissioned indie factual producer Tigress Productions to produce Going Ape. The edgy new 13×30 series centers on the protection of primates against loggers and bush meat traders set against the backdrop of the Cameroon rainforest. The series will premiere on Animal Planet International in the U.K. in November and in Europe, Asia and Canada in 1Q 2007.
