Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, November 9, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

New digital media publisher Backlit ( launches its first teen-targeted e-books series, Borrowing Abby Grace, The Start-Up and The Dig, via Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Apple.  Other young adult e-book titles set to debut next year will include Young Americans, Future Perfect and The Defiants.  Backlit has a first look film and TV deal with Happy Madison producer Jack Giarraputo. He is also Backlit’s strategic partner, creative advisor and lead investor.  Panio Gianopoulos is Backlit Fiction’s Publisher and Editorial Director.  Gianopoulos was previously an editor at Bloomsbury Publishing for ten years, and also served as a consultant for BCG entertainment.  In an effort to engage kids/teen and get quick feedback, Backlit will preview content via Facebook and Twitter, and its e-book downloads will be released exclusively digitally every few weeks.  Additionally, the publisher is launching a Mentors Program (, under which Backlit will mentor and crowdsource new young adult authors to write new books (or “episodes”).


DHX Media inks new UK licensees for its stop-motion animated preschool series Rastamouse.  New licensing partners include: Vogue (melamine tableware and drinkware products, clocks and room decor); Zap (Rastamouse-themed bedding line); MVSports (outdoor toys including skateboards, scooters, skates etc.); Sommerbond (underwear and nightwear, which will debut in soft launch in spring/summer 2012, with a full roll out in fall/winter 2012); Their Nibs (kid’s sleepwear, sold via its store as well as Selfridges and John Lewis).  Additionally, Stella Projects has been appointed as the licensing agent for Rastamouse for Australia and New Zealand.  Stella will be appointing local licensees to complement EMI, which has music rights for the region, and ABC Commercial, which will develop and launch the Rastamouse DVD in Australia.

Lucasfilm and Burton Snowboards has partnered to introduce Star Wars snowboard gear for holiday 2011.  Burton is offering a limited run of two new Star Wars-based youth snowboarding products, including a new collectible RED youth helmet (for snowboarding or bike riding), called the Avid Grom R2-D2 ($99.95), and limited edition series of Chopper Star Wars snowboards ($189.95) for kids featuring images from the original Star Wars trilogy.  The new Star Wars inspired products will be available in Burton Flagship stores and snowboarding stores around the world beginning mid November 2011.

Warner Bros. Consumer Products and Diesel have teamed to launch a new collection of DC Comics Super Heroes underwear, four different models, beginning this month, November 2011.  The new Diesel DC Comics Super Hero-based intimate collection features: Batman Boxer Trunk; The Flash Boxer Trunk; Green Lantern Boxer Trunk; and The Joker Boxer Trunk.


American Greetings Properties marks the addition of the new Strawberry Shortcake character, singer Cherry Jam, with a new Strawberry Shortcake Berry Biggest Talent Show Sweepstakes.  To participate in the contest parents can submit/upload a short video of their kids dancing to Strawberry Shortcake’s Sunshine Girls song at now through November 21, 2011.  For a little inspiration – an instructional dance video to Sunshine Girls can be found on the Strawberry Shortcake Facebook fan page.  The grand prize winner will be announced on December 9, 2011.

Cartoon Network‘s Ben 10 Live: Power of the Omnitrix stage show ( is set to launch in Hong Kong, at the Kowloon International Trade and Convention Centre, November 11-13, 2011 as part of its Asia Pacific tour.


Fox International inks a carriage deal for its 24-hour, commercial-free BabyTV in Mexico with cable TV provider Cablemas.  The channel is available in both English and Spanish, and is a known quantity in Mexico where the channel is already available via Cablevision, Sky Mexico and DISH Mexico.  BabyTV is currently signing up licensees for BabyTV products for retail in stores across Latin America.  BabyTV is distributed by Fox International in Latin America, and in the US the Spanish language channel is distributed by FOX Global Networks along with additional channels FOX Deportes, Utilisima, and Nat Geo Mundo.

LeapFrog Enterprises ( and Lionsgate team up for the release of the first title in their learning DVD series to feature original LeapFrog educational characters Scout & Friends.  Developed by Lionsgate in partnership with LeapFrog, the preschool-targeted LeapFrog: Phonics Farm DVD is available from Lionsgate Home Entertainment, as well as via digital download and on demand.  LeapFrog: Phonics Farm is the 12th educational video since the first one in the series, Letter Factory, launched in 2003.  Additional DVDs starring Scout will be available throughout the coming year.

Activision Publishing, a subsidiary of Activision Blizzard, debuts Wappy Dog (, the first video game controlled electronic toy pet, developed by Sega Toys and released along with a new Nintendo DS Wappy Dog videogame.  The Wappy Dog toy, a virtual and physical pet, and the new Wappy Dog video game communicate with one another via sound to create an interactive experience.  Players raise Wappy through five distinct age phases, from playful puppy to full-grown pooch; the dog’s voice, songs, and behavior all change to match its maturation level. Each pet provides a personal, customizable experience including stickers that come bundled free with the game and the ability to choose digital accessories and color options.  Wappy communicates its various needs to players through the game, which translates 350+ different bark responses.  A portable pet, kids can enter Travel Mode, which allows them to care for Wappy’s needs via their Nintendo DS.  Additionally, in-game toys, grooming, and environments provide other ways to interact with Wappy when not at home.  When users get home then can switch back to the default Home Mode that will automatically sync up the physical toy with all growth Wappy made while they were out.

Summit Entertainment, Chop Shop Music Supervision and Atlantic Records release The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn  Part 1 Original Motion Picture Soundtrack this week in stores and online, just ahead of Summit’s nationwide release of its feature film The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn  Part 1 on Friday, November 18, 2011.  The new Breaking Dawn  Part 1 soundtrack features new tracks from a range of artists, including Bruno Mars, Christina Perri, The Joy Formidable, The Belle Brigade, Iron & Wine, Theophilus London, and Mia Maestro (who co-stars in the new movie as Carmen of the Denali Coven).  MTV will exclusively premiere the music video to Mars’ song featured on the soundtrack, It Will Rain, tonight, Wednesday, November 9 at 7:56p.  Immediately following at 8p, It Will Rain will premiere on, MTV Hits and mtvU.  Additionally, several artists featured on the soundtrack will also be part of a free promotional tour ahead that will make its way to Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, San Francisco, and Salt Lake City this week, including live performances by Christina Perri, Sleeping At Last, Aqualung & Lucy Schwartz alongside appearances from select members of the film’s cast, including Peter Facinelli, Elizabeth Reaser, Kellan Lutz, Nikki Reed, Jackson Rathbone, and Ashley Greene.  Further information about the soundtrack can be found at


The 3rd annual TeenNick HALO Awards (90 minutes) debut on Nick at Nite on Sunday, November 6 at 8p, was the top telecast of the night in its time period, and also increased over the prior four week time period with K2-11 (+18%), K6-11 (+25%), Tweens 9-14 (+19%) and Teen 12-17 (+40%).
