Google finally unveiled its much-anticipated Brand Pages feature for Google+, allowing companies to finally come on board the new social media site. Along with the pages, which appear just like regular Google+ profiles with the exception of a square icon that designates them as pages, the company also introduced a couple of changes that integrates Google+ with its robust search offering. First, Google+ brand pages will appear in search results. Second, via a service it calls Direct Connect, users will be able to instantly access a company’s brand page by simply typing “+” before the search query term. For example, if interested in the Pepsi page, simply type “+Pepsi” and Google will take you directly to the page, and even ask if you want to add the page to your Circles. Companies will be able to request for access to the Direct Connect very soon, says Vic Gundotra, Google’s SVP of engineering.
Univision Television Group and Mobile Content Venture (MCV) have announced that Univision will adopt the MCV-backed Dyle mobile digital TV service, reports Broadcasting & Cable. Expected to launch to consumers in the first half of 2012, Dyle is a national mobile content service that delivers live television to mobile devices. The agreement means that four of the top six biggest broadcasters will be using the service in some way, as Univision joins Fox, NBC and Telemundo, who have already signed up.
Dish Network has approached several media companies about the prospects of licensing their channels for a potential paid-TV service that is offered over the internet, rather than over satellite, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal. While nothing is set in stone, these talks are an attempt by the satellite provider to mitigate rising programming costs and combat declining subscribership.
Passion Distribution has inked a deal with Hulu to bring its content on to the video site’s free and paid-subscription models. The first titles to be launched under the agreement will be My Big Fat Family Challenge, Culture X and Grimefighters.
Square, the mobile payment start-up that doesn’t require you to do anything but say your name to confirm payment, has added another investor in billionaire Richard Branson, reports Reuters. While the amount of his investment was not disclosed, this marks another step forward for the start-up as it also received a $100 million round of financing this past June, and recorded $10 million in daily transactions for the first time this past weekend.
AdoTube has launched VidLogic , an end-to-end video campaign management system for in-stream video advertisers. Via a single integrated platform, VidLogic allows advertisers to plan, develop creative, purchase, manage, target and measure video campaigns bought on nearly any exchange, network or publisher site. The platform also offers access to almost 95% of global video inventory, through AdoTube’s partnerships with exchanges, networks and publishers.
Yahoo has introduced Proximity Match and a new version of Consumer Direct. Powered by the wealth of information Yahoo has culled from its vast online user database, Proximity Match is a new location-based display platform that targets consumers based on their home address and the advertiser’s business location. Meanwhile, Consumer Direct grabs in-store purchase data from Nielsen Catalina Solutions and combines it with Yahoo’s online user information to foster better audience targeting across Yahoo.
A study from digital marketing agency Web Liquid, and reported by eMarketer, finds that Facebook posts that include photos attract the most user engagement (at 0.37%), higher than posts that include video (0.31%), text-only (0.27%) and links (0.15%). These findings are similar to a recent study conducted by Momentus Media, which also found that status updates that included the word “like” saw a 0.38% engagement rate, versus only 0.14% or 0.11% for updates with the word “comment” or neither word, respectively.
A survey conducted by Sybase 365 and the Mobile Marketing Association reveals that 62% of consumers are willing to make holiday purchases via mobile devices if enticed by coupons, discounts, text alerts, gift cards or loyalty points. This is almost double the number of respondents who indicated the same thing last year. As a matter of fact, 53% of those polled also responded that they are aware of existing mobile campaigns from the likes of Target, Best Buy, Amazon.com, Apple and Groupon.
If you’re dying to download that app, be careful what you wish for as a study from AdaptiveMobile finds that 75% of the public might be giving away their location when downloading an app on their smartphone. In fact, popular apps like Angry Birds, Paper Toss and Jaws have access to info such as country, city, location coordinates and even your name, and can share this information with up to 17 different domains. These findings might not sit well with the 69% of those surveyed by the mobile security company’s Global Security Insights in Mobile report, who say such privacy breaches are totally unacceptable.
The Emmy iOS app has been nominated for the “Best Mobile App in Entertainment” award at the Mobile Excellence Awards. The app provides information and content on all nominated TV shows and celebrities, along with additional content from previous years’ telecasts. Users can also access live streams of select Academy Evening With events (such as An Evening with Glee) along with the ability to connect to the Academy’s social media sites on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.
Umami has introduced a new free TV companion app for the iPad. The app uses audio fingerprinting technology to automatically detect and sync with the program you are watching on TV in order to provide the user quick access to relevant content, including show information, cast bios, photos, social media pages, fan sites and many other content sources. The app also has a “Smart Search” function, which recommends keywords and links that drives a user to additional information, and real-time social feeds to join in on conversations regarding the show.
Black Ocean has acquired LMK from Hearst Entertainment & Syndication and has plans to re-launch the app in early 2012. LMK is a free, customizable mobile app that provides up-to-date news and information on topics the user cares most about. Once users download the app, they can select their topics of interest from five top categories that can be then broken down by numerous sub-categories, which in turn can be broken down into sub-sub-categories, and so on and so forth until the user hits the exact topic they want.
LogMeIn’s LogMeIn Rescue has received an update that now provides a single web-based tool in order remotely support smartphones, tablets and computers running on many mobile platforms including iOS, Android, BlackBerry and Windows Mobile. The new version is meant to make it easier for customer service specialists and IT helpdesks to access devices in order to quickly secure and troubleshoot them from anywhere with an internet connection.
As part of Millennial Media‘s announced expansion into the Asia-Pacific region, Robert Woolfrey will come on board as the region’s Managing Director. Woolfrey will be in charge of the division’s operations, including establishing a presence and building the staff, as the company is looking to be aggressive in filling open positions within sales, operations and business development in the region. He will also represent the company on the Mobile Marketing Association’s Asia Pacific Board of Directors.
Xytech Systems Corporation, the facility management software provider for media and broadcast companies, has hired Daniel Lynch to be the General Manager of its London office. Lynch will oversee the company’s U.K.-based operations and customer growth in Europe.

I have been spending way too much time having fun with this website. It’s called Drinkify, and what it does is something very simple and yet very cool. Type in the name of an artist and it will suggest a drink recommendation that best matches that artist. For good measure, they’ll also play an example song on the recommendation page. That alone is impressive enough, but the site also took the time to make sure many of your eclectic tastes in music are covered. From relatively obscure rap artists to techno to Beethoven, they’re all on there. In fact, do what I do, and turn it into a game to see which artists they DON’T have, you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
