Cynopsis: Kids!

11/08/06

Good morning. It’s  Wednesday, November  8, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

The Amazing Colossal Adventures of WordGirl, a new humorous animated series of shorts from Scholastic Media, will begin airing interstitially on PBS Kids Go! this month.  Beginning November 10, PBS will premiere 20 two-minute WordGirl shorts during the breaks of specific episodes of Maya & Miguel.  In addition, 10 one-minute shorts will debut within the PBS Kids Go! programming block beginning November 13.  Created and produced by Soup2Nuts, an animation studio and unit of Scholastic Media, The Amazing Colossal Adventures of WordGirl segments that follow the adventures of mild-mannered fifth grader, Becky Bostford, who becomes WordGirl armed with a cape, vocabulary words and lots of definitions.  In addition there will be a The Amazing Colossal Adventures of WordGirl website.  The cast of WordGirl includes Tom Kenny (SpongeBob SquarePants), Chris Parnell and Wanda Sykes to name a few.

Indonesia is getting its own localized version of Sesame Street under a co-production deal between Sesame Workshop and Creative Indigo Production, a Jakarta-based company.  Under the new partnership Sesame Workshop and Creative Indigo Productions will deliver three seasons of Sesame Street Indonesia, an original series for a total of 156 episodes.  As in other countries that have produced a regional adaptation of Sesame Street, the Indonesian series will feature specially crafted segments featuring the kids, culture and stories unique to the region, in addition to an educational structure. In this case, the educational structure will be overseen by Dr. Muhammad Zuhdi, curriculum development specialists who will work with a panel of Indonesian-based early childhood education experts and other educators.  Additional plans include developing characters and sets for the series as well as workshops to train local writers and puppeteers.  Initial funding for Sesame Street Indonesia comes from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

Rosenbloom Entertainment and Avondale Entertainment Group have inked a deal to produce a series of family-targeted movies based on author Phyllis Reynolds Naylor’s Alice novels (there are 23 of them), per the Hollywood Reporter.  The first movie, titled The Alice Movie, will be directed by Sandy Tung and is set to star Alyson Stoner, Lucas Grabell, Penny Marshall, Ann Dowd and Luke Perry.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Anime Network has entered into a wireless deal with Sprint to launch a video channel that provides mobile video content to Sprint Power Vision subscribers.  The channel will be available on Sprint TV’s Channel 66, and Sprint subscribers can access clips for an additional $4.95 per month.  Anime programming, which is delivered to Sprint via Zoovision, features a range of genres (e.g. Horror, Sci-Fi, Action, Comedy and Drama), including these titles (primarily or teens and older): Mezzo (Action); Kino’s Journey (Action); Divergence Eve (Sci-fi); Wandaba Style (Comedy); MEGAMAN (Action).

Elsewhere, under a new carriage deal with Cogeco Cable the Anime Network On Demand, a subscription service, launches this week to Cogeco Cable Ontario Digital Cable customers for $6.99 Canadian per month.  Anime Network On Demand is also expected to be available to Québec Digital Cable customers in the coming weeks.

Luke, I am your cable provider.  Beginning this month Comcast Digital Cable with On Demand will offer all six Star Wars moves in hi-def to customers want to watch them with Cinemax HD On Demand, nine days before the movies air on the Cinemax HD cable channel.  Cinemax and Cinemax HD kick off a weekend marathon of all six movies on Friday, November 10 at midnight with Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace, and winding up the event on Monday, November 13 with Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi. The films will air at additional times throughout November, with a schedule of dates and times available at http://www.cinemax.com .

Cartoon Network Korea will launch on November 11 with local and global content available in Korean and tailored to Korean children’s viewing habits.  The network, a TBS and JoongAng Ilbo (JAI) joint venture, will be a 24-hour kid’s service, according to World Screen.  The programming includes Powerpuff Girls Z, Ben 10, My Gym Partner’s a Monkey, preschool block Tiny TV (with Ethelbert the Tiger, Postman Pat, and Poong Poong Ee), Pang Pang Friday, and much more.  Korean fare set to air on the new channel will include live-action title Magic Warrior Mir & Gaon, and animations Olympus Guardian, Bumper King Zapper and Nalong, and Japanese animation Princess Yucie, Makibaoh, and Kimba the White Lion.

In other PBS Kids Go! programming highlights:

  • Cyberchase My Big Idea Marathon, a 2-hour event hosted by Cyberchase for Real’s Harry and Bianca (both human beings) and features four back-to-back Cyberchase invention focused episodes.  The Cyberchase My Big Idea Marathon is part of the My Big Idea initiative, which supports the use of math/problem solving within the invention process.  The voice of actress and math whiz Danica McKellar (really, she’s a math whiz!) will be featured in one of the episodes in the marathon.  Cyberchase for Real is the live-action segment that recaps the math concepts at the end of each episode of the series.
  • This December, PBSKIDSGO.org will launch News Flash Five, available on the website only, from Thirteen/WNET New York designed for early elementary school kids. News Flash Five will feature a cast of five kids, rendered in flash-animation, reporting on national and world news, technology, entertainment, sports and weather each week in, of course, an age-appropriate manner.  Kids will also be able to play games related to the news as well as having access to other journalism related resources such as how to write an op-ed.
  • Later this month, PBSKIDSGO.org will introduce the new KidsWorld Sports web site.  Based off the international sports documentary series, KidsWorld Sports profiles kids who have the talent, potential and dream to succeed in various sports.  On the site, kids can watch short video clips from the series, send video e-cards, compete in sport-related games and learn about a different sports through from video featuring real kids.

Video games publisher/developer Namco Bandai Games America Inc. has pacted with Electronic Arts Inc. to co-publish the PC game Hellgate: London in both Europe and North America.  Hellgate: London is an action driven role-playing game and the first original game developed by Flagship Studios.  Under the deal EA will handle marketing, sales and distribution of the game, while Namco Bandai works with Flagship Studios on the developing the game and ancillary partnerships including novels, toys, manga, comics and more.  The new partnership does not affect Flagship Studio’s granting of rights to Namco Bandai to publish future Hellgate: London products.

MARKETING/LICENSING

DIC Entertainment and American Greetings Corporation have completed a five year home entertainment deal with Fox Home Entertainment (FHE) for the distribution of Strawberry Shortcake in the US and Canada.  Under the new multi-million dollar pact FHE, which has distributed Strawberry Shortcake home entertainment products since 2003, will distribute new DVD exclusive animated titles, a new CGI animated a movie and live-action series.  Additionally, FHE will now distribute select kid’s titles from DIC’s library including Care Bears, Madeline, Inspector Gadget and Dennis the Menace.  DIC, American Greetings and FHE are slated to release about four new DVD exclusive titles in 2007.

VideoEgg, Inc., which provides user generated video content publishing services, has teamed-up with myYearbook.com to add video capabilities that will allow members of myYearbook.com to post video content from almost any device to the site easily and quickly.  Targeted to teens and young adults, the myYearbook.com site currently has 1.5 million members per Media Metrix.

Continuing their partnership, Nickelodeon and Live Nation, an event/venue manager, are set to launch Go, Diego, Go Live! The Great Jaguar Rescue, a new theatrical live tour.  Based on Nickelodeon’s animated preschool series Go, Diego, Go!, the live show will kick-off in February and will make stops in upwards of 50 US markets.  Prior to this Nickelodeon Recreation and Live Nation developed and produced Dora the Explorer Live!, which just completed its third US tour season and made its European debut this past summer.  Stuart Rosenstein, VP/Nickelodeon Recreation heads the project for the network.  Go, Diego, Go! airs weekdays at 9:30a.

Spectra Animation releases two new Toopy and Binoo preschool DVDs, Santa Claus Toopy and The Big Parade (Père Noël Toupie and La Grande Parade in French) this week in Canada.  The DVDs have been launched under Corus Entertainment’s Treehouse Presents label and are distributed by Kaboom.  A third DVD, entitled Funny Bunny, is slated to for release in spring 2007.  Developed by Spectra Animation, which produces the series in association with Corus’ preschool service, Treehouse, Toopy and Binoo is a series of 104 five-minute shorts grouped into 25-minute episodes that follow the adventures of Toopy, a mouse with a vivid imagination, and his friend, Binoo, a tiny cat, who is genuinely innocent with her own sense of imagination.  Toopy and Binoo is also televised in French on Télé-Québec.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. has named its longtime executive Gary McCarthy as VP/Finance and Accounting, of the Animation division, which includes Cartoon Network, Boomerang, Adult Swim, Cartoonnetwork.com, AdultSwim.com, Cartoon Network Studios and Williams Street Studios.  In his new role McCarthy is responsible for long-range planning, budgeting, forecasting, deal analysis, production accounting and general accounting functions for Turner’s Animation division.  He will remain based in Atlanta and will report to Mark Hartman, SVP/Finance and Accounting, Turner Entertainment Group.  Prior to this McCarthy was VP within Turner’s Strategic Planning unit, he joined the company in 1993 as an accountant with Cartoon Network, and has served a number of roles in-between.
