Cynopsis: Kids!

11/07/07

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, November 7, 2007, and this is your first early morning.

The N begins production on a new narrative series and a reality series, both of which are slated to premiere in 2008.

  • The N and Reveille, the production company behind shows including The Office and Ugly Betty, have begun production in Decatur, Illinois, on the new teen fitness series The N’s Student Body (8×60). Hosted by Laila Ali, the series follows 12 students as they aim for a healthier lifestyle including losing weight and overcoming fears, and learning to maintain that lifestyle.  Student Body is executive produced by The N, Reveille’s Mark Koops, Dave Broome of 25/7 Productions and Ben Silverman, founder, Reveille and Co-Chairman, NBC Entertainment and Universal Media Studios.
  • Production is also under way in Vancouver, BC on The Assistants (13×30), The N’s new live-action comedy about the lives of four young adults working as assistants for a big time movie producer Hollywood.  Created by Will McRobb and Chris Viscardi, The Assistants is executive produced by The Tom Lynch Company, McRobb and Viscardi, the latter two are also show runners on the project.

Production I.G and noted manga artist/creator Shirow Masamune (Ghost in the Shell franchise) have teamed to create a new sci-fi suspense anime TV series Real Drive.  A co-production with Nippon Television Network Corp. (NTV), Real Drive is currently slated to premiere in Japan on NTV in April 2008

Germany’s Your Family Entertainment (YFE), a kid and family targeted production and distribution company, launches the new Pay TV channel titled, “yourfamily,” this week.  The programming lineup for the channel includes educational, preschool and cartoon shows for kids and entertainment programs aimed at the whole family.  Initially, “yourfamily” is being distributed through Hansenet, Arcor and Eutelsat’s direct to cable service Kabelkiosk.  Additional discussions are ongoing with other content providers in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

France’s Breakout Films is working with Muse Entertainment on a new series, Dad’s In The Attic (26×26), in association with France 2 and Canada’s YLE.  The K11-16-targeted live action show revolves around a family where dad works from home, and is set to begin filming in March as a French-Canadian joint venture, according to C21 Media.  ContentFilm’s Fireworks International will be in charge of international distribution.  Breakout is also working with another Canadian company, Sienna Films, on the 2×90 Rough miniseries.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Blueprint Kids and National Geographic Kids’ Entertainment launch The Great Kookamunga Challenge, a new interactive game based on the animated series Iggy Arbuckle.  The game was created by zinc roe design and produced by Anne-Sophie Brieger, and is made possible by support from the Bell Broadcast and new Media Fund and Teletoon. ( www.teletoon.com/kookamung)

TV-Loonland has inked new TV, home entertainment and license deals for the preschool series Little Princess (65×11).

  • TV rights for both seasons of Little Princess have been picked up by Cartoon Network Spain and TV Ontario, Canada.  Broadcasters taking the second season include France’s Canal J and France 5, and ABC Australia, Minimax Poland, as well as pub-caster RUV Iceland.  Little Princess is set to bow in Italy on RAI TRE soon.
  • Home entertainment rights for both seasons of the property have been completed with LNK Audiovisual S.A. in Portugal and Universal Pictures Video for French speaking Europe.  Meanwhile the new first season home video rights have been licensed to Polish Cass Film Entertainment.
  • TV-Loonland has signed a licensing deal with publisher Panini, which will market an activity magazine in German speaking Europe from 2008.

Several pieces of news from video game publisher Ubisoft:

  • Releasing this week are three My Coach language skill building game titles: My Word Coach (Wii and Nintendo DS), My Spanish Coach and My French Coach (both for DS).
  • Ubisoft has released its Imagine series of video games targeted specifically to Girls 6-14.  The line includes Imagine game titles, Imagine Animal Doctor, Babyz, Fashion Designer and Master Chef for Nintendo DS.
  • Ubisoft has also inked a deal to acquire Digital Kids, the Japanese video game development studio. Digital Kids’ team includes some 20 developers and specializes in game titles for Nintendo DS.  The deal is expected to close during 3Q of the 2007-8 fiscal year.

In other girl-targeted video game titles, D3Publisher of America, Inc. (D3PA) releases Horse Life, an original game for Nintendo DS.  In Horse Life, players have their own horse, virtual pet of sorts, that lives in their DS, where they must use the screen and microphone to care for, feed and train their horse in order to head into competition.  Once in training, players can head to the Gear Shop where they can buy 80+ different items (e.g. clothing, saddles, treats).  Developed by Neko Entertainment, Horse Life has an ESRB rating of E for Everyone.

Miffy and Friends enters into two new tween-teen aimed partnerships set up by Big Tent Entertainment, the North American licensing agent for the property.  From February 2008, Loungefly and Mighty Fine Inc. will distribute Miffy accessories and apparel exclusively to Hot Topic stores and its website: Loungefly’s Miffy based product line will include jewelry, key chains, bags and wallets; Might Fine’s line will feature t-shirts and tank tops with Miffy and her pals.  Hot Topic will also feature a Miffy line of stationery from Innovative Designs, and Miffy plush toys from Play Along.

This week marks the release of Not Just Cartoons: Nicktoons, a new hardbound book outlining the 15+ years of Nickelodeon’s original Nicktoons from publisher Melcher Media.

Answer to Yesterday’s Trivia Question: On The Mickey Mouse Club each day of the week had a special theme. Although many things changed from the original show in 1955 to the The All New Mickey Mouse Club (1989-1994), Wednesday kept the same theme. What was it?  ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN DAY     Kudos to:  David Stern-BARD Entertainment/NY; Kerry Hughes-qubo/NY; Kimberly Keeley-Safety4Kids/Stamford, CT; Andrea Blain-Andrea Blain Public Relations/Skokie, IL; Michele Hoebink-DIRECTV, Inc./El Segundo, CA; Jill Stewart-Disney Channel/Burbank; Ted Biaselli-Disney Channel/CA

Today’s Trivia Question:  In the animated Disney movie, The Rescuers, what was the name of the diamond that Medusa and Mr. Snoops wanted Penny to find for them?     ( Click here with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone. Unofficial rules: Only the second four correct answers from each time zone will be mentioned; and once you’ve been mentioned in any of the Cynopsis editions, you can’t be mentioned again that calendar week.)
