Cynopsis: Kids!

11/05/08

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, November 5, 2008 and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Breakthrough Animation inks a broadcast production deal for the new preschool series My Big Big Friend (52×11), with Canada’s Treehouse channel.  My Big Big Friend is being produced by Breakthrough Animation in association with Brazil’s 2D Lab and Treehouse.  Breakthrough will handle the distribution for the property. My Big Big Friend revolves around a shy but adventurous four-year-old and his big imagination.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Astral Media’s Family Channel (Canada) launches its new kid-targeted online portal Famclub, the first stage in a multi-phase rollout of Family.ca’s online community.  Famclub is designed to allow users to create their own space and connect with Family Channel’s online and on-air properties, as well as offering games, videos and mini-sites.  For the debut of the new site, Family Channel teamed with the Kids Internet Safety Alliance to develop a set of Internet Safety Tips for kids.  Additionally, the network worked with KINSA on an upcoming episode of its series The Latest Buzz, which centers on kids and internet safety.

Another movie adaptation about Mulan (Hua Mulan) is on the way, but this time from Hong Kong director Jingle Ma, per Variety.  The director plans to begin filming in February 2009.  Disney released its animated version of Mulan in 1988.  Not sure whether this live-action Mulan movie is related to the similar project discussed by The Weinstein Company last year when the company unveiled plans to start a fund ($285 million) to develop, produce, acquire, market and distribute Asian themed movies, some of which would likely be filmed in Asia.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Entertainment Rights signs a worldwide publishing pact with the Penguin Group for the new preschool property Tinga Tinga Tales.  Under the deal Penguin imprints Puffin Books serving as publisher in the UK and will also control all foreign publishing rights, while Grosset & Dunlap will act as the publishing partner in North America.  Set to begin delivering in fall 2009, the animated series Tinga Tinga Tales (52×11) is produced by Tiger Aspect Production in association with Homeboyz in Nairobi and in partnership with CBeebies (UK) and Playhouse Disney (US).  The series, which will premiere in 2010, is based on African folktales and storytelling and is being created in the style of the Tinga Tinga art of Tanzania.  All of the images are hand painted by local African artists and then computer animated in Kenya at an animation studio set up by Tiger Aspect and Homeboyz.

ABC Family and Gaiam, Inc., will release the TV movie, Princess, on DVD for the first time on February 3, 2009.  The movie premiered on ABC Family in April 2008.

Universal Studios Hollywood celebrates holiday 2008 with Grinchmas’ Celebration, weekends beginning December 6, and daily from December 22-31.  With the backdrop of the sets from the live-action movie Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas, the Grinchmas’ Celebration features real snow, face-time with The Grinch, Max and Cindy-Lou Who as well as tree lightings and a performance by Whoville residents.

Adness Entertainment awards Toy Network, LLC, a division of Manley Toys, as the amusement plush licensee for the Crack & Bonky franchise in the US and Canada.  Toy Network plans to launch the Crack & Bonky plushes, in various sizes, at theme parks and in crane machines at retail stores, among other places in Q1 2009.

Whitehouse Leisure is named the pan-European licensee for amusement and leisure plush for Gummibar under a deal brokered by AT Merchandise for Gummybear International and Yazoo Music.   Whitehouse Leisure is set to produce plush toys in a range of sizes, some of which will include sound chips featuring Gummibar music and lyrics,

Disney‘s flying in India:
India’s Jet Airways launches an in-flight festival for kids called W.O.W. (World of Wonders) this holiday season.  Under an exclusive deal with Disney Channel the two month long WOW event will feature programming including the network’s Hannah Montana, The Suite Life of Zack & Cody, and Phineas & Ferb, and Wizards of Waverly Place.  Additionally, WOW will include a promotional contest for the TV movie Camp Rock, which debuts on Disney Channel in India on December 26, 2008, and then as part of Jet Airways in-flight program.
India’s Kingfisher Airlines has inked a deal with Dinsey Publishing to provide its kid’s books and magazines in-flight as part of the airline’s Little Wings program.  The deal will also include give-a-ways.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

4Kids Entertainment promotes Matthew Miller to VP/Advertising Sales.  Miller expands his role to include oversight of national advertising for 4Kids’ properties and media sales planning and strategy for 4KidsTV, as well as 4Kids VOD.  He will also help manage inventory and set sales goals for the ad team.  Miller reports directly to Daniel Barnathan, President/Advertising Sales.  Miller previously toiled for Turner Broadcasting in ad sales and marketing for Cartoon Network, TBS and TNT.
