Cynopsis: Kids!
11/03/10

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, November 3, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Mattel and MGA Entertainment will head back to court in their un-ending battle over the Bratz dolls, following a new ruling by a federal judge granting MGA’s appeal for a new trial on “all issues.”  Based on his review the 2008 trial, the new judge has vacated the verdicts and damages awarded in that trial, which includes the $100 million damages awarded to Mattel.  The judge found that the earlier rulings included a range of errors that were “central, significant, pervasive, and likely determinative of the outcome of all claims” in the 2008 trial.  The new trial date is set for January 11, 2011.  This summer an appeals court panel of three overturned a December 2008 order that awarded Mattel the rights to a lot of MGA’s Bratz dolls and related products.  Fast-forward to last month, when the US Court of Appeals in San Francisco turned down Mattel’s petition for that decision to be reheard and reviewed by a larger panel of judges.

The US Supreme Court heard oral arguments on Tuesday in the case of Schwarzenegger v. Entertainment Merchants Association (EMA), which challenges a 2005 California law that would bans the sale of violent video games to minors (those under 18).  The law has never been put into effect has yet to take effect, as rulings by lower federal courts have deemed it to be a violation of the First Amendment.  The court, which appears to be split on this topic (and not down traditional lines) will eventually decide whether video games are protected forms of artistic expression or are graphic depictions of violence that should be regulated and prohibited for sale or rental to minors.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Joining the voice-over cast of the new 3D, CG-animated feature film, Arthur Christmas, are James McAvoy, Hugh Laurie, Jim Broadbent, Bill Nighy, Imelda Staunton, and Ashley Jensen.  The family-targeted comedy is produced by Aardman Animations for Sony Pictures Animation, and is slated for release November 23, 2011.  Set on Christmas Eve, the movie answers the age-old question: “So how does Santa deliver all those presents in one night?” (the secret lies in Santa’s ‘ultra-high-tech operation’ beneath the North Pole). The movie also revolves around a comically dysfunctional family and Arthur (McAvoy) who has a mission that must be completed before Christmas morning.  Arthur Christmas is directed by Sarah Smith, with Barry Cook as Co-Director.  Smith also penned the screenplay with Peter Baynham.  Producer is Steve Pegram. The Production Designer on the feature is Evgeni Tomov.  Serving as Executive Producers are Carla Shelley, Peter Lord and David Sproxton. Michael Giacchino and Adam Cohen are the composers.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Nickelodeon Consumer Products (NCP) and Simon & Schuster release the new book Dora the Explorer in World School Day Adventure, written by singer/songwriter Shakira released as part of Dora’s 10th anniversary celebration.   Available in English and Spanish, the title is the first jacketed hardcover Dora storybook ($16.99), and features an ‘animated’ version of Shakira.  A portion of the book’s proceeds will benefit The Barefoot Foundation, which is Shakira’s US-based non-profit organization that has a mission of making educational available to every child.

The Lego Group and NASA launch their new partnership when the Space Shuttle Discovery blasts off from Cape Canaveral today on its last scheduled flight.  Aboard the Space Shuttle will have on board a small Lego space shuttle model.  Under the new three-year relationship, The Lego Group and NASA will take part in a joint outreach and education program that is designed to inspire kids to get interested, be creative and explore science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).  This February 2011 more than a dozen Lego activities will be flown to the International Space Station (ISS), where astronauts will build the models, complete educational activities, and record the results. The activities include exploring daily life on the ISS and the effect of microgravity on simple machines.  Luckily for kids and teachers, the videos of the completed in-space activities, along with space-themed educational materials, will be available at www.legospace.com .  The first Lego products (two astronaut minifigures) made their was to Space via NASA in 2004 on the Spirit and Opportunity Mars Exploration Rovers.
