Good morning. It’s Wednesday, November 3, 2004, and this is your first early morning briefing.
ABC‘s lineup of Extreme Makeover Home Edition special and the football game gave the network a winning lineup in the final analysis on Monday night. ABC’s primetime average of 5.3/14 A18-49 out-weighed NBC’s lineup that included an SNL Presidential Bash special by a single share point according to Nielsen Media Research (5.3/14 vs. 5.1/13). CBS’ managed a 4.3/11 for its sitcom block/CSI Miami combo. Fox averaged a 3.3/8, followed by WB 2.2/5 and UPN 1.2/3. At 8pm NBC’s Fear Factor delivered a 4.8/12, ahead of Fox’s Trading Spouses (3.4/9) and Extreme Makeover Home Edition (3.2/9). 7th Heaven on the WB won the P12-17 demo with a 3.6/17, as well as the W12-17 with a 6.0/17. Monday Night Football on ABC scored a 6.0/16 A18-49 from 9-11:32p. CBS’ won the non-sporting category 9-10p with a 5.0/12, followed in quick succession by NBC with a 4.7/11. The Swan on Fox managed a 3.1/7. Everwood on WB held up in the same two demos as 7th Heaven, though slipped off by 3 and 5 share points respectively among P12-17 and W12-17. SNL’s Presidential Bash at 10p delivered a 5.8/15, outpacing CSI Miami (5.0/13), beating or tying CBS in every key adult demo with the exception of W25-54. In that demo, CBS’ CSI Miami earned a 7.3/17, overpowering SNL’s special (6.4/14).
CBS has placed dr. vegas (Fri at 10p) on hiatus effective this week. Sitting in for the show during the November sweep will be a rotating lineup of CSI, CSI Miami and Without a Trace.
Tonight’s Premieres: Fox: Nanny 911 at 9pm
Casting / Development / Production:
Kim Delaney (NYPD Blue) has joined the cast of Fox’s The O.C. (premieres tomorrow) for five eps as Peter Gallagher’s ex girlfriend. Delaney was also in a project called Colderon, which has been officially dead-ended.
Teri Polo (Meet the Parents) will play the wife of Jimmy Smits’ character on The West Wing, scheduled to appear in four eps, with an option for 12 more episodes if the show returns next season. Smits has a similar option for another season.
CBS has ordered 12 episodes of a new drama series called Numbers (Paramount/Scott Free Prods) from exec prods Ridley Scott and Tony Scott. This is the project that sounds a lot like A Beautiful Mind in that a numbers wizard from MIT is recruited to assist the FBI, more specifically his brother who works for the FBI, to help on various cases. The show stars Rob Morrow as the FBI agent, and David Krumholtz as our MIT whiz.
The Jerry Bruckheimer project that has received a put pilot order from the WB now has an official name – Dog Town Lawyers (Warner Bros. TV). The drama is about a young upstart lawyer prodigy and his elder mentor.
Chicago’s WBBM will move The Larry Elder Show (Warner Bros.) from its current 3pm berth to late night at 2am, replacing it with two eps of Judge Judy (Paramount). The insertion of Judge Judy means this station will be double running its 2-3pm double run of Judge Judy – the only station who is running a full two hours of the Judge. Thus far this season, The Larry Elder Show on WBBM has averaged a 1.0/3 HH rating, losing 57% off its Judge Judy lead-in, and down by 29% vs. last year’s time period average.
A&E has ordered up a third season of its reality show Airline (Granada America NY), a day in the life of Southwest Airlines. The show will also expand to include day to day ops at a fourth Southwest airport – Houston Hobby. New season eps are expected to take to the air in 2nd qtr 2005.
Showtime has picked up the cable feature film rights to Monster (Newmarket, distrib by DEJ Prods) starring Charlize Theron, according to Variety. Although no fee has been reported, the film did pull in $34.4 million domestically, and another $24.9 internationally. License fees are usually in the neighborhood of 15% of the domestic box office, pegging this film in the $5 million range. The film will be seen on Showtime beginning next month.
Battlestar Gallactica will see its return to television in a new updated form on Sci Fi Channel beginning Friday, January 14. The cast includes Edward James Olmos, Mary McDonnell, Katee Sackhoff and Tricia Helfer.

Intermedia Advertising Group’s Top Ten Most Effective New Ads for new campaigns airing the weeks of October 11-24, 2004. The list is ranked by viewer’s ability to recall the new ads and their associated products and brands. The Recall Score is the percentage of TV viewers who within 24 hours are able to remember the brand of the ad they saw during normal TV viewing. The scores are then indexed against the mean score for all ads during the time period to create the Recall Index; 100 is Average. The History Channel presents This Day in History: 1957: Laika, formerly a stray dog on the streets of Moscow, becomes a space pioneer by traveling into orbit aboard the Sputnik 2 spacecraft. Although for many years Soviet authorities insisted that Laika survived for days in space, in fact she did not survive more than a few hours. Laika was the first of at least a dozen Soviet dogs to travel into space in advance of cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin’s historic 1961 mission.
