Good morning. It’s Wednesday, November 28, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
Golf Channel is unveiling a new brand image campaign, dubbed “We Know We’re Different.” The campaign is designed to identify with core golf fans by “highlighting insider observations avid golfers share about the game.” First spots hit the air during Golf Channel’s coverage of the Tiger Woods-hosted World Challenge presented by Northwestern Mutual. Golf Channel partnered with Troika for the marketing maneuvers, with the on-air spots and print ads showcasing a Golf Channel observation about the sport, from fashion to ball-marking rituals.
Poised to lose at least one more school in the near future with the ACC on the prowl, the Big East made its move yesterday by plucking Conference USA once more. The league formally announced the additions of Tulane University for all sports and East Carolina University for football, both slated to begin play in the Big East in the 2014-15 academic year. ECU, meanwhile, is expected to park its Olympic sports in the Colonial Athletic Association barring a change of heart by the conference.
In other realignment news, Denver is departing the WAC for the Summit with Grand Canyon University set to take their place.
MLS Commissioner Don Garber confirmed plans to bring in a second NY team during his state of the sport call with reporters earlier this week. Garber said the new team was targeting a debut in 2016 and that MLS was looking to finalize approval for the proposed $300-million soccer-specific stadium in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in Queens, N.Y. In other notes, Garber stated that the 2013 season will being on March 2, marking its earliest start ever.
