11/28/07

Good Morning.  It’s Wednesday, November 28, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

Discovery Times Channel will take on a new name as of January 27, 2008 and become Investigation Discovery (ID). The network will continue programming documentaries and series based on cultural and hot topic issues from around the world, and will additionally expand its partnerships with news organizations to offer more fact-based investigative reporting to its current affairs content. The network currently reaches 50 million U.S. households. ID will launch its programming lineup, new logo, on-air branding campaign and website in early January.

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

FCC chairman Kevin Martin yesterday had to indefinitely postpone the commission’s monthly public meeting because he couldn’t convince a majority of his colleagues that cable had reached at least 70% household penetration. For now, that’s a win for the cable industry who sent many an email and letter to Martin trying to convince him to step back from his proposal for new regulations.  Martin also had to back down on his campaign to force cable distribution of new TV station-sourced content, saying “I think the Commissioners wanted some more time to think about the minority ownership proposals that we put forth, so we removed those from the agenda.”

ION Media Networks, Inc. purchased the rights to air The Drew Carey Show on ION Television from Warner Bros. Domestic Cable Distribution. ION will begin airing the series with a “Drew Year’s Eve Party” marathon on December 31 from 7-11p, then add the half-hour sitcom to its primetime schedule January 1, airing Monday-Thursday at 9p and 930p.

The Hallmark Channel went on a little shopping spree and picked up cable rights to 7th Heaven, I Love Lucy and Cheers, along with additional episodes of Touched by an Angel and Matlock.  7th Heaven debuts on Hallmark in January, Cheers later on in 2008, and I Love Lucy in January 2009.

And the response from the WGA East and West regarding Carson Daly returning to production with his late night show this week?  To paraphrase, they’re “disappointed” tho both acknowledge that unlike all of the other late night talk show hosts, Daly is not a Writers Guild member and therefore is not ignoring his own union.  However, the WGA does hope Daly will “reconsider his decision” to call for scab writers to provide his material for his show.  As far as negotiations, they will reconvene this morning at 10am in LA.  Rumors coming out of LA span the possibilities – strike could be over by Friday, we’re nowhere near a deal, looking for a deal signed in time for Christmas, stalemate.

Torque TV, the digital TV network for car and racing enthusiasts, just premiered an original series featuring former Indy 500 champ Danny Sullivan called Driving with Danny. The show goes beyond typical road tests and shows Danny driving the super cars of the world and giving viewers unique insight into the personality and purpose of each automobile from a professional driver’s point of view.

This Friday at 9p Showtime and Cable Positive, the cable and telecommunications AIDS action organization, will air the third edition of the docu-series Positive Voices: Women & HIV. This new documentary, produced in partnership with Kismet Films, will focus on how HIV/AIDS has impacted women.
