Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, November 28, 2007, and this is your first early morning.

New Zealand’s Weta Productions and UK-based Chapman Entertainment are teaming to develop kid-targeted TV properties.  The first project under the pact will be an animated comedy designed for Boys 6-9, which will be jointly led by Weta’s Martin Baynton and Richard Taylor and Chapman Entertainment’s Creative Director, Keith Chapman (who also created Bob the Builder).  The two are working on a selection of 2D and CGI animated properties that they will present to broadcasters and the licensing community soon, with pre-production expected to commence in 2008.  Chapman Entertainment is known for its preschool programs such as FiFi and the Flowertots and Roary the Racing Car.  Weta Productions produces the animated series Jane and the Dragon as well as having provided the special effects for the Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Chronicles of Narnia among others.

New Line Cinema acquires the US distribution rights to the animated movie Planet 51 from Handmade Films, according to Thomson Financial.  Written by Joe Stillman (Shrek) and produced by Ilion Animation Studios, Planet 51 is slated for release in 2009.  Handmade has already inked sales for the picture in 30+ territories including to Entertainment Film Distributors for the UK.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Taffy Entertainment, which opened an office in Shanghai a year ago, has completed new program sales with broadcasters in Asia for four of its animated series:

  • The animated TV Fantastic Four (26×26) is picked up for broadcast by Asia TV (Hong Kong), ABS-CBS (The Philippines) and OBS (Korea).  Co-produced by MoonScoop and Marvel, with Cartoon Network Europe and MG, Fantastic Four Taffy has distribution rights outside the US, with Marvel holding US TV as well as DVD distribution rights and worldwide merchandising.
  • Taking the rights to Code Lyoko (97×26) is Animax (Korea) and Starlight (Pakistan).  The series is produced by MoonScoop Productions in association with France 3 and Canal J, with Taffy serving as worldwide distributor.
  • Dive Olly Dive! (52×11) is acquired by Cartoon Network India, Cineplex Thailand and TPI (Indonesia).  Created by Andrew and Ian Ross, the series is co-produced by Mick Young Productions Ltd, Flying Bark Productions, KI.KA, ARD Germany, Telegael Ireland and GDC, with support of the Media Plus Program of the European Community.
  • HBO Asia takes the rights to Dr. Dog (52×13), which is based on the book of the same name by author Babette Cole.  The Dr. Dog animated series is produced by France Animation, ZDF (Germany), Canal J (France) and Colorland Animation (China), in association with TF1 (France), CNC, NRK (Norway), YLE (Finland) and SVT (Sweden).

Decode Enterprises inks new agreements for the tween-targeted live-action series The Latest Buzz with SuperRTL (Germany).  Canada’s The Family Channel recently ordered a second season of the Decode Entertainment-produced series, for a total of 39 x 22 episodes, all of which have been licensed to Boomerang UK, Disney Channel France, Disney Channel Italy and ABC (Australia).  Additionally, Decode completed a number of deals for the series last month at MIPCOM.

Dolphin Entertainment signs new pacts for its Nickelodeon made-for-TV movies Shredderman Rules! And The Last Day of Summer, both of which premiered on Nickelodeon US this summer 2007.  Picking up the two live-action TV movies are Globo (Brazil), M-NET (South Africa), RTE (Ireland), Klub RTL (Belgium), E-Vision (United Arab Emirates), and Nickelodeon International. 

A Global Warning From The Kids of the World, a new special presented by Nick News with Linda Ellerbee, is scheduled to bow Sunday, December 9 at 9p on Nickelodeon.  With the aim of reaching adults through kids and their personal experience and environments, the show features kids in different parts of the world explaining what they think about the issues and threats surrounding the change in the world’s climate, including teens who live near Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, a boy in the Netherlands, and two Native-American teens from Shishmaref, Alaska, a village near the Artic Circle that is slipping into the sea rapidly, its shoreline has diminished by 10+ feet annually for the six or so years due to erosion and impinging elements as a result of global warming.

MARKETING/LICENSING

A group of new license deals for NBC’s series The Singing Bee, which is produced by Juma Entertainment and The Gurin Company, available at retail now for holiday 2007.  Joy Tashjian Marketing Group completed agreements with Cardinal Industries (board and card games), Imagination Games (DVD-ROM games), and Outrageous International (karaoke products).

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Sam Register enters into a multi-property development/production agreement with Warner Bros. Animation.  A ten-year veteran executive of Cartoon Network, where he oversaw the development/production of animated series including Ben 10, Teen Titans and Star Wars: Lone Wars among others, Register will also maintain his existing first-look development deal with sister-network Cartoon Network.  Most recently, Register served as Executive Producer of the new 2D animated series, Transformers Animated, from Cartoon Network and Hasbro, Inc., which is scheduled to bow on the network in early 2008.  Previously, Register was SVP/Development and later SVP/Original Animation, Cartoon Network.  Prior to that he served in creative roles for Colossal Pictures, Nickelodeon and Turner New Media.

Brain Burke is named COO, Navarre Corporation.  Burke, who had been President of the company’s distribution business, will now oversee publishing, licensing, distribution operations and sales and marketing activities for the company. Burke will report to CEO, Cary L. Deacon.

RATINGS

November 2007 becomes Disney Channel’s most-watched November in the network’s history for Total Viewers 2+ in Prime (2.8 million) and Total Day (1.6 million), and similarly for K6-11 in Prime (1.1 million) and Total Day (609,000).  Also setting new highs for the month of November was the network’s preschool-targeted Playhouse Disney block, which had its biggest audience ever among K2-5 (454,000), and largest November audience ever in Total Viewers 2+ (1.3 million).
