NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

Former Nickelodeon U.K. exec Malcolm Bird announced a new children’s site called Viddiverse. Ad Week reports the site will offer a mix of syndicated children’s shows as well as kid-produced videos to make for a Netflix-YouTube-combo type of service for 8 to 13 year olds. Kids will be able to create profiles and chat with friends on the site as well, but there will be a complement of child safety and parental control features. The site is being beta tested in the next few weeks for an early 2014 launch.

As kids programmers and distributors search for new ways to reach advertisers and viewers, online games and apps have emerged as an effective method to drive engagement–and ultimately revenue and ratings. Because tablets, game consoles and smart phones are often the first places kids connect with brands and shows, more and more kids marketers are using games and apps to connect with them. CONTENT MEDIA

The President of the United States is getting into the Hunger Games craze by asking the nation to vote which Turkey to “sacrifice” for his Thanksgiving Day meal. The White House is challenging the Turkey called “Popcorn” against the Turkey called “Caramel,” and encouraging Americans to vote on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram on which bird should win the… honor. Listen to both of the Turkey’s gobbles on SoundCloud, and vote with the hashtag #TeamCaramel or #TeamPopcorn on the social platforms.

Maker Studios and Ben Stiller‘s studio Red Hour Digital announced a partnership to produce the second season of mock reality series Next Time on Lonny. The first season was independently produced, and brought in more than a million views from its six episodes. The second season will premiere in early 2014. Maker Studios also plans to promote the first season before the new season launches.

Martha Stewart Living is bringing back its Martha Stewart’s Countdown to Christmas video series for a second year on Nov. 29. The countdown will feature 11 videos with Stewart, demonstrating holiday ideas and tips. The videos will integrate brands including Starbucks, USPS, Shutterfly and JC Penny.

Univision Network’s Mira Quien Baila! (Look Who’s Dancing!) set some social records on Twitter for its season finale. The network recorded the season four wrap up translated into a 141 percent increase in Twitter activity, and 151 percent unique Twitter activity from the previous season. It placed second in racking up the most social traffic for a broadcast series on Nov. 24, ahead of CBS’s The Mentalist and The Amazing Race.

comScore released its Global Video Rankings Report from October yesterday, which included a few surprising twists, including Vimeo ranking above DailyMotion and Yahoo! with 135 million viewers. Vimeo’s CEO Kerry Trainor told Cynopsis, “In addition to tremendous user growth, we released big upgrades to our PRO subscription package and made a number of strategic hires.” Vimeo will also continue to build its Vimeo On Demand platform in 2014.

ADVERTISING

Video intel company BrandAds released new data showing that 60 percent of advertising professionals believe they can’t measure impact on video campaigns with current tools in the current market. Advertisers said they want to better measure viewability and brand lift on campaigns, and that video ad measurement is too expensive and takes too long to measure in order to make real-time changes to campaigns. BrandAds surveyed agency and brand professionals from September to October.

DIGITAL SPOTLIGHT OF THE DAY

The New York Times Magazine has created a series of 11 one-line short films with the help of mega stars like Cate Blanchett, Robert Redford and Oprah Winfrey. The project, called Making a Scene, was directed by Oscar-winning cinematographer Janusz Kaminiski and is part of the magazine’s annual Hollywood edition, which usually releases short films simultaneously with its issue.
