Discovery Communications and the Koppel Group have amicably and mutually agreed to end their working relationship six months before the three-year deal expires in late May 2009. Ted Koppel began with the Discovery Channel in January 2006 as Managing Editor along with Tom Bettag and eight producers and staff from ABC News’ Nightline to produce documentary-style, in-depth news specials. Under the agreement, the Koppel Group produced fifteen hours of programming including seven original documentaries. The programming direction of the Discovery Channel will continue with long-running series and specials focusing more on nonfiction areas rather than news content.

Strike Alert: With Screen Actors Guild saying it might strike by mid-January, the threat is causing studio executives to produce broadcast network pilot projects under AFTRA contracts, per Variety. So far, SAG has not said when it will send members a strike authorization which would take approximately three weeks to complete and need a 75% approval of those members voting. Many actors are members of both SAG and AFTRA and if SAG does go on strike, those actors would be legally required to work on shows produced under an AFTRA contract. In July, AFTRA ratified a new three-year primetime agreement, despite strong opposition from SAG.

NBC revealed midseason premiere dates for new and returning series:
January 4: Superstars of Dance at 9p (finale on January 26 at 8p)
January 6: The Biggest Loser: Couples at 8p
January 9: Howie Do It at 8p
January 16: Friday Night Lights at 9p

In a follow up to Tuesday’s story about Alan Colmes departing Fox News Channel’s Hannity & Colmes program after 12 years, according to the New York Times, Sean Hannity will become the sole host of the political debate show. The network has not confirmed this report and Colmes will continue with announced plans to remain with the network as a commentator, develop a possible new weekend program and host his weekday radio show.

DTV Update: According to Nielsen, U.S. households are inching closer to being ready for the digital transition on February 17, 2009. Nielsen released the November 2008 preparedness update and 7.4% of U.S. households continue to be completely unready; compared to 7.7% in October 2008. Households partially ready have decreased to 10.3% in November; compared to 10.7% in October.

Ashton Kutcher’s production company Katalyst Films has two projects in development for The CW, cites Variety. The first is an ensemble drama about the dark side of the modeling industry called The Beautiful Life about male and females models living together in New York City. The second project is the 60m Chloe Gamble based on the upcoming book The One about a young beauty queen from Texas who moves to Hollywood with her family looking for fame and fortune. Both shows will be produced by CBS Paramount TV where Katalyst Films has an overall deal for scripted TV projects.

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY: In an almost-courtship reminiscent of Yahoo’s play for Facebook itself, microblogging service Twitter said thanks but no thanks to an acquisition offer from Facebook for a cool $500 million in stock, reports WSJ’s Boomtown. Meanwhile Kara says Yahoo and AOL are still haggling over price: Yahoo want to pay $3-$4 billion for the portal and Time Warner wants to get more like $5-$6 billion. It would seem as though things have to get even worse before the dealmakers get desperate.   Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.

CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  GigaPix Studios, an indie production studio, and Polychrome Pictures/Gold River Entertainment have inked a venture for financing, P&A and worldwide theatrical distribution of a slate of five kid friendly feature films, which will be produced over the next three years.  GigaPix Studios has also secured financing of between $6-10 million per picture, and Polychrome Pictures/Gold River Entertainment, is providing a revolving line of credit of up to $25 million per picture.  Media 8 Entertainment will handle all foreign distribution and sales for the movies.  Full edition: CYN KIDS.

CYNOPSIS INTERNATIONAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  The rumors are mulling around that France’s Vivendi and Telefonica in Spain may look to join hands to put in a joint bid for Digital Plus, the satellite pay TV unit of Spain’s Prisa.  The latter is selling Digital Plus to pay down debt, partially for a loan coming due in March.  Full edition: CYN INTERNATIONAL.
