Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, November 26, 2008 and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.  

GigaPix Studios, an indie production studio, and Polychrome Pictures/Gold River Entertainment have inked a venture for financing, P&A and worldwide theatrical distribution of a slate of five kid friendly feature films, which will be produced over the next three years.  GigaPix Studios has also secured financing of between $6-10 million per picture, and Polychrome Pictures/Gold River Entertainment, is providing a revolving line of credit of up to $25 million per picture.  Media 8 Entertainment will handle all foreign distribution and sales for the movies.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Endemol has teamed-up with Teshkeel Media, a Kuwait-based publishing group, to co-produce a new animated series based on its superhero comic books, THE 99.  The series revolves around the members of THE 99, hailing from 99 different countries and each of which is from embodies one of 99 global values (e.g. wisdom, mercy, strength etc.).  Designed to promote positive role models for young people, THE 99 comic book series was launched in 2006 and is written and illustrated by former and current Marvel and DC comic writers and artists.  The comics are distributed across the Middle East, South Asia and Indonesia.  Additionally, the first of six THE 99 Village theme parks is set to open in Kuwait in early 2009.  Endemol UK will oversee production on the series, with animation to be completed in India and post-production in the UK.  Endemol International will hold worldwide TV, online, mobile and DVD distribution rights.

MORE KIDS STUFF

The BBC has laid out plans for the Winter/Spring season for CBeebies (preschool) and CBBC (K6-12) channels.

CBeebies new season highlights include new and returning series:

  • In the learning zone, Discover & Do comes the new show Timmy Time, from Aardman Animations, about a lamb named Timmy and his pals in a nursery school-like experience.
  • CBeebies hosts Chris Jarvis and Pui Fan Lee join to present a new play and exploration centric series Show Me Show Me.
  • Popular host Justin Fletch will present the new sketch-comedy show Gigglebox.
  • Set in a land inhabited by animal characters, the new series Waybuloo invites kids to explore a range of emotions (e.g. love, wisdom, harmony).
  • The new animated series Poetry Pie brings to life poems by noted poets through music, song and dance.
  • The Big Fun Time afternoon block will see the debut of: Dirtgirlworld a music filled series about the outdoors; Grandpa in My Pocket, a show about a grandpa his grandson; and the mythology series, Tellytales, which features a mix of animation and live-action.
  • Series returning with new season include In the Night Garden

CBBC new season highlights include new and returning series:

  • Horrible Histories introduces kids to events/characters from history.
  • CBBC looks at homelessness and runaways through limited run programs, including the three-part dramatic series Runaway, and Sofa Surfers (slang for homeless children) a documentary that tells five stories of child poverty.
  • Half Moon Investigations is a new mixed comedy/drama based on author Eoin Colfer’s (Artemis Fowl) book.
  • Set in the South Pacific, Paradise Cafe revolves around siblings in their new home and the mysteries there.
  • Host Steve Backshall set out on a new adventure in the wildlife series Deadly 60 (referring to the most lethal animals on earth).
  • Returning for new episodes is the third seasons of The Sarah Jane Adventures for fall 2009, as well as M.I. High.

Sorpresa!, the US Spanish-language kid-targeted network, gets families in the holiday spirit with its special Countdown to Christmas programming, which will air daily December 1-24 (7-8p).  The countdown features several premieres and special presentations, kicking off with the Sonic Underground Christmas Special.  The month also includes the network’s original production Juega Como un MLS Pro on December 7, and culminating on Christmas Eve with Cine Sorpresa!’s airing of A Christmas Carol.

This December, PBS Kids and PBS Kids Go! celebrate the holiday season with new themed episodes from Super Why! and Wordworld, with returning holiday episodes including Arthur’s Perfect Christmas, Cyberchase’s Starlight Night, Maya & Miguel’s – Miguel’s Wonderful Life, among others (check local listings, airdates and times vary).  Online, pbskids.org/holidays will offer holiday themed story tools in Dot’s Story Factory, as well as fun winter activities and games to play.

Entertainment Rights makes its programming content available for download and purchase on iTunes in the UK.  ER’s kid-targeted programming available via iTunes includes Finely the Fire Engine, He-Man, Trumpton, George of the Jungle, Frankenstein’s Cat, Rupert Bear and Chigley, with Postman Pat and She-Ra to follow.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Madame Alexander enters into a deal with Paramount Licensing to produce a series of collectible dolls based on five Paramount Pictures properties, Charlotte’s Web, Grease and three Audrey Hepburn movies, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Funny Face and Sabrina.  All of the dolls will be released at retail in spring 2009, except for the Sabrina doll, which will be available later.

RATINGS

Nickelodeon‘s premiere of the new The Naked Brothers Band TV movie, Operation Mojo, on Saturday, November 22 at 9p was the top show among K6-11 1.4 million and Tweens 9-14 1.3 million across broadcast and basic cable TV for the night, up +48% and +126% respectively.  Additionally, the TV movie was watched by 2.8 million total viewers P2+, with 1.7 million K2-11 tuning in.
