Cynopsis: Kids!
11/24/10

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, November 24, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Hit Entertainment enters into a deal with electronic publisher RosettaBooks and Amazon.com to make full Rainbow Magic collection, including existing and future titles in the series, available exclusive for the Kindle.  Seventy-three books in the Rainbow Magic backlist catalog are now available in the Kindle Store, and future books will launch in conjunction with the printed editions from Scholastic.  Targeted to girls 5-9, Hit launched the Rainbow Magic series in the UK in 2003, which now includes 80+ books that follow the adventures of two young girls and their relationships with a groups of fairies and other creatures.  Rainbow Magic has sold 28+ million copies in 31 languages worldwide, including 6+ million in the US.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Curious George 2: Follow That Monkey (81 minutes) debuts today on PBS Kids (check local listings).  The movie features a celebrity-filled voice cast including Tim Curry, Jamie Kennedy, Matt Lauer, Frank Welker, and Jerry Lewis.  The movie also features music from Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys.  A sequel to the 2006 animated Curious George movie, Curious George 2: Follow That Monkey was released earlier this year on DVD.

Tricon Films & Television and Toronto-based Shark Teeth Films announce the debut of the mixed CGI animated and live-action comedy series in development, Smallfoot, with the teaser on CBBC‘s My Toons ( www.bbc.co.uk/cbbc/cartoonworks/mytoons/ ), which offers a range of animated shorts.  Created by Shark Teeth’s director/producer Adrian Carter and producer Tom Mudd at Shark Teeth Films, Smallfoot follows the misadventures of Smallfoot, a mini Sasquatch (twice as big as a mouse) and new kid on the block, and his new friend Larry, a resourceful and talkative mouse that regularly gets them into trouble.

Bejuba Entertainment inks a number of deals for the CGI preschool series The Hive (26×30 or 78×7).  Bejuba holds the worldwide TV, DVD and digital distribution rights to the property on behalf of The Hive Enterprises.  Picking up broadcast rights for The Hive are ABC TV (Australia), YLE (Finland), and Hop (Israel).  New DVD deals include a Russian language version of the series distributed by Noviy Disk in Russia, Georgia and CIS, with Magna Home Entertainment signs on to handle distribution of the English version in Australia and New Zealand.  From The Hive Enterprises, The Hive series is produced by Monumental Productions, Lupus Films and DQ Entertainment.

Spain-based Imira Entertainment completes licensing and merchandising deals in Iberia for its K4-8 aimed series Sandra, the Fairytale Detective (52×13), which airs in Spain on Clan TV, as well as on channels around the world.  Sandra, the Fairytale Detective is a co-production between Imira Entertainment, RTVE and DQ Entertainment.  New deals in Iberia include: Invercas picks up rights for party items (pinatas, head banners, bags and boxes for candy); Comansi comes on board as licensee for plastic figures, board games, and soft balls; also in Spain and Portugal, Nova Azimat is awarded the license for toy candy, novelty candy and pop marshmallows; Copywrite Europe will launch backpacks, bags, stationery and a can of crayons; and in a further deal, Imira grants Panini the license for trading cards and games, fotocards, stick & stack, stick & story, stick & puzzle and stick & color books.  Previously Imira signed license deals with Roca Editorial for publishing and home entertainment deals with TF1 for France and Tribanda Pictures for Spain.

Archie Comics, which earlier this year launched its first magazine Life With Archie, is set to introduce its second magazine title, Veronica & Betty!, in spring/summer 2011.  Written by Michael Uslan, the new magazine will flip back and forth between Veronica and Betty adventures around the world as international exchange students, and life back home where Archie, Reggie and Jughead befriend the two exchange students, girls, who arrive in their place.  Veronica & Betty will be illustrated by Dan Parent.
