Cynopsis: Kids!
11/23/11

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, November 23, 2011, and this your first early morning briefing.

Netflix makes its recently launched Just for Kids section available to its members in the US on Nintendo’s Wii gaming console.  To access the Just for Kids section, which features TV and movie content targeted to kids 12 and younger, users need to select Just for Kids within the Netflix app for Wii.  Once there kids and parents can scroll through categories, which are organized by genres like superheroes, princesses, dinosaurs and girl power, and click on popular characters such as Phineas and Ferb or Elmo to find a selection of titles featuring those characters.  The new offering comes as almost half of the 20+ million Netflix accounts have been used to instantly watch at least two kid-targeted titles in the last three months.  The Netflix Just for Kids section is currently available in the US on PC, Mac and the Wii console.  Similar functionality will come to other devices over the next year.

It’s a Cabin Fever snowstorm in the US and UK.  Earlier this week Amulet Books, an imprint of Abrams, released Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Cabin Fever; the sixth book in author Jeff Kinney’s series and has now become the number one bestselling hardcover book in the US for the calendar year-to-date.  The new title had a first printing of 6 million copies, the largest first printing of any book in 2011, has sold 1+ million copies in its first week.  The tally for Cabin Fever places it 25+% ahead of the previous Diary of a Wimpy Kid book, The Ugly Truth, in its first week on sale in November 2010.  Meanwhile, in the UK Puffin Books, an imprint of Penguin Books, is reporting a similar story.  Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Cabin Fever has landed atop the UK Bookscan kid’s chart.  With sales of close to 82,000 copies, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Cabin Fever has recorded the highest first week sales across the UK Bookscan kid’s chart in more than a year.  The first week sales so far for Cabin Fever are +169% versus the first week sales of the previous book in the series, The Ugly Truth (2010).

STONE SOUP

What are kids asking for this holiday season?  According to The NPD Group’s Kids Industry Data Service (KIDS), these are the initial results from the survey that fielded in November 2011 in response to the unaided, open-end question: What is on your child’s wish list for this upcoming holiday season?  The list compiled 1,477 mentions of items that kids are requesting for holiday gifts.  Here’s how the responses played out:

  • Toys                                                47%
  • Video Game Hardware & Software          13%
  • Consumer Electronics                           10%
  • Apparel and Accessories                        9%
  • Sporting Gear                                      3%
  • DVD’s/ Blu-Ray                                    3%
  • Books                                                 3%
  • Items for the Home                               2%
  • Music                                                  2%

As compared to the results from last year, toys capture a bigger portion of the responses. Last year the top 5 categories were Toys (39%), Video Games (15%), Apparel & Accessories (9%), Consumer Electronics (8%), and Sporting Gear (5%).  This year the toys mentioned specifically most frequently are evergreen brands including LEGO and Barbie.  The NPD Group’s KIDS is a monthly, syndicated tracking service that provides users with a holistic view of purchases made for kids (birth through 14-years-old) across categories and retailers with a focus on licensing and brands.
