CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

11/23/05

Good morning.  It’s Wednesday, November 23, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing.

A couple of notable CBS premiere dates:

  • January 17 at 9-10p:  Love Monkey starring Tom Cavanagh as a 30-something single record exec, working and dating in NYC
  • January 23 at 930-10p:  The Jenna Elfman Show about a single woman with the single goal of balancing her legal career with finding true love.  (Out of Practice returns to the time period in March.)
  • TBA: The Unit and The New Adventures of Old Christine premiere dates have not yet been announced, but are expected soon.

After 25 years in the anchor chair, Ted Koppel closed his final Nightline show last night suggesting viewers give the new rendition of his late night news program a shot (it starts on Monday), warning “If you don’t, I promise you the network will just put another comedy show in this time slot. Then you’ll be sorry.”

* MORE GOOD STUFF *Court TV’s online service Court TV Extra will provide feeds from the trial of Saddam Hussein starting on Monday, November 28.  Coverage will be provided on a 20-minute delay from Baghdad, beginning at 4a, continuing until 9a, weekdays.  Obviously the schedule of the trial may vary, and Court TV Extra will keep viewers up-to-date on the day to day changes or delays. If you’re not awake or aware between 4a and 9a, on-demand clips will also be available thru the day. While there is a monthly fee for Court TV Extra ($5.95/month), new subscribers can sign up for a free 30-day trial period.

Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia will be launching a new magazine this spring called Blueprint, targeting 30-somethings and the designing of their first homes. This announcement follows another last month that the company has formed a partnership with KB Homes to build entire housing communities, using Martha’s vision as its guide.

On November 27, the Sci Fi Channel will debut its miniseries The Triangle.  Starting today, four days before the network premiere, NBC Universal Cable will offer two specials – The Bermuda Triangle: Startling New Secrets and SciFi Inside: The Triangle, as free VOD supplements.  Participating affiliates include Time Warner Cable, Adelphia, Insight Communications, Patriot Media and Verizon.  Additionally, NBCU Cable will provide taggable spots for affiliates that sign up for the specials to help promote the offering.  Lester Holt will host the specials from NBC New Prods.

Berl Rotfeld, creator and producer of the TV series Greatest Sports Legends, died this past Friday at his home in Pennsylvania.  He was 77.  A leader in sports programming, Mr. Rotfeld created the program Greatest Sports Legends in 1972, for which he received an Emmy Award and was nominated for two others. The program can still be seen today on ESPN Classic.  He is survived by his wife Carole, and his sons Bruce and Steve.

There is a 90-second advertisement called Stand Off for the new Microsoft Xbox 360, an ad that reportedly will never make it to air and perhaps when you see it you’ll know why.  Nonetheless, it’s definitely worth seeing – check this out:  http://www.adjab.com/files/2005/11/xboxstandoff.wmv.  Apparently the link doesn’t work for everyone, hopefully it will for you.

Note to self:  Settle in on the evening of December 8 and watch National Geographic Channel’s Inside Grand Central.  You go thru this commuter hub twice daily and probably never knew about the secret tunnels and operations, or that it covered 48 acres in the middle of Manhattan with nearly three quarters of a million people passing thru it everyday.  Have you been to the whispering arch in front of the Oyster Bar? I wonder if they’ll include it in the special.

* NEW ORDERS / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *As Christopher Knight and Adrianne Curry prepare for their spring wedding, VH1 prepares for a second season of My Fair Brady, the reality show that captures the goings on in the Knight/Curry household. My Fair Brady is produced by Mindless Entertainment and 51 Pictures.

NBC has ordered a script of a comedy project from Tannenbaum Co. and Warner Bros. TV, and written by Jarrad Paul about a single guy just dumped for his partner. Eric Tannenbaum and Kim Tannenbaum will exec prod along with Jarrad Paul.

A few projects coming from Gross Entertainment and Touchstone Television, according to Variety: ABC20 Questions is a conspiracy thriller project set in Washington DC, written by Thomas Hines. Day Break is listed as an action thriller, and the concept is not being shared as yet.  NBC: Bond Street is a drama project set in a hipper-than-the-rest-of-the-room NYC hotel. This project is from writers Zev Borow and Matthew Carnahan.NBC is looking at a 30m comedy project from Grand Productions and Fox Television Studios called Dad, about a man raising his teenage kids, while also looking back to his years as a teen with his father.  Gary Randall is exec producing, along with Eric Wasserman and Eric Siegel who are also writing the comedy.

* EXECUTIVE MOVES *Grey Worldwide‘s Jim Heekin named his first key exec hires since he started his new position as Chairman/CEO on September 6.  Both Suresh Nair and Nat Puccio were named as EVP/Co-Directors of Global Strategic Planning.  Both Suresh and Nat were previously EVP/chief strategy officers for North America at Interpublic Group of Cos.’ McCann Erickson Worldwide.

Viacom Inc. has elected seven independent Directors to the Boards of its two new companies that will be created following the separation of Viacom.  Four Directors will join the Board of CBS Corporation and three Directors will join the Board of new Viacom upon completion of the separation, which is expected to take place by the end of 2005.  Sumner M. Redstone and Shari Redstone will serve on both Boards as Chairman and non-executive Vice Chair, respectively.

  • Elected Directors of the CBS Corporation are: Charles K. Gifford, Bruce S. Gordon, Ann N. Reese and Judith A. Sprieser. They join previously announced CBS Board members David R. Andelman, Joseph A. Califano, Jr., William S. Cohen, Philippe P. Dauman, Leslie Moonves and Robert D. Walter.
  • Newly elected Directors of the new Viacom are: Thomas E. Dooley, Ellen V. Futter and Robert K. Kraft. They join previously announced new Viacom Board members George S. Abrams, Philippe P. Dauman, Tom Freston, Alan C. Greenberg, Charles E. Phillips, Jr., Frederic V. Salerno and William Schwartz.

The History Channel
presents This Day in History:
1903 – Colorado Governor James Peabody intervenes in a strike in the Cripple Creek gold mines.  By sending in the state militia, Peabody signaled his desire to break the Western Federation of Miners, led by William “Big Bill” Haywood.  Peabody’s action reversed the early successes of the strike, which called for, among other things, an eight-hour work day.  Soldiers protected strikebreakers and arrested union supporters, and when a union supporter bombed a railroad station, killing several strikebreakers, public sentiment turned against the union.

Answer to Yesterday’s Trivia Question: In the film 13 Going on 30, Jennifer Garner stars as a young woman, reliving her high school days back in the 1980s.  During the scene when she begins to dance at a work-related party, she imitates the dancers of what music video?  MICHAEL JACKSON’S THRILLER        Kudos to:  Karen Feigenbaum-Logo/MTV Networks/NY; Kristina Gonera-iN Demand Networks/NY; John Mooney-Edna Cowan Management/NY; Shirley Stone-By Kids For Kids/Rhinebeck NY; Tennille Lyons-KDAF/Dallas; Pam Tierney-MMT/Chicago; Rachel Bishop-MMT Chicago/Chicago; Jason Roland-KMIZ TV/Columbia MO;  Julie Foster-KSLA/Shreveport LA; Shannon Hobbs-Ascent Media/Burbank; Luke Do-Horizon Media Inc/LA; Danielle Rosenfeld-Channel 10/Israel; Sandra Kleinfeld-CanWest MediaWorks Inc/Toronto; Sheldon Weibe-Eclipse Magazine/Calgary AB Canada
