Cynopsis: Kids!

11/21/07

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, November 21, 2007, and this is your first early morning.

A bipartisan group of four US senators has written to the Entertainment Software Ratings Board (ESRB) calling for, “a thorough review of the video game ratings process.”  The letter was spurred following the new Manhunt 2 video game receiving an M (Mature) rating, which the group believes should have been given a rating of AO (Adults Only), has “opened the door to widespread release of the game, which depicts horrific violence.”  Further explaining their request the letter from the senators said, “We have consistently urged parents to pay attention to the ESRB rating system. We must ensure that parents can rely on the consistency and accuracy of those ratings.”  A response from the ESRB is likely to come soon.  The ESRB is a non-profit, self-regulatory group that independently assigns ratings, enforces advertising guidelines and supports online privacy practices for the software gaming industry.

Animax is set to make its debut on the German satellite platform arenaSAT from December 1, 2007.  Targeted to people 14-29, the new Animax channel will feature a 24/7 programming line-up of anime content across a range of genres.  The Unity Media cable company operates the arenaSAT platform, which has about 340,000 subscribers.

MORE KIDS STUFF

With all the warm weather it seems difficult to grasp that tomorrow is Thanksgiving.  And yet it is, which of course also means it is time for the 81st annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.  With 3.5 million spectators expected to watch the parade in person, some 50 million are expected to watch the Macy’s Parade live on NBC (9a-12p) as it makes its way through the streets of NYC, beginning at 77th and Central Park West and working its way down to Macy’s Herald Square at 34th street.  As always if you are looking for me, and really why wouldn’t you be, I’ll be at the balloon blowing up site, which starts later today at the parade starting point.  What’s new to the parade this year and who is performing?

  • New balloons include Shrek, Hello Kitty and Sesame Street’s Muppet character Abby Cadabby, and the much discussed (at least with the group of tweens/teens I reviewed the list with) is the parade balloon version of Jeff Koons’ Rabbit, based on his stainless steel sculpture (1986) … something sort of surreal about a huge balloon based on a sculpture of a balloon.  And in the ongoing greening initiative, returning to the parade this year will be the Kermit the Frog balloon, and he has been missed.  Outside the “celebrity balloon” category, other new balloons include Artie The Pirate (I know I’m gonna like this one) and Macy’s Parade Balloon Cluster.
  • Floats debuting this year are The Care Bears Winter Fun-derland, International Cele-Bear-Ation Clock Tower, M&M’s Chocolate Candies on Broadway, Music Bigger than Life
  • Stagehand strike or not – the parade will include its traditional participation of Broadway shows including performances from the casts of Young Frankenstein, Legally Blonde, Xanadu and as always the Radio City Rockettes among others.
  • Musical guests include Dolly Parton, Nikki Blonsky, Good Charlotte, Ne-Yo, Jonas Brothers, Wynonna Judd and some of the cast of High School Musical and more.
  • Bindi and Terri Irwin will also take part in the parade on the Animal Planet float

In other NBC Thanksgiving programming news, following the parade the network will air The National Dog Show Presented by Purina at 2:50p (2hrs).  The family-targeted special will again be hosted by actor/author/dancer John O’Hurley and dog show analyst David Frei (best known as the voice of the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show on USA Network).  In addition, NBC will also provide online coverage of the National Dog Show, including video and audio descriptions of each of the 165 breed winners at MSNBC.com.  The TV special will include a vignette on the website www.petcentric.com, which features O’Hurley and DOGGIE-MAIL, an e-mail program with talking dogs, where folks can outfit a dog, select or record audio and send a customized email to friends.

The Jonas Brothers will host a limited edition music series on XM Radio beginning this Friday, November 23 at 3p, as part of Top 20 on 20. The weekly series, “I’m With The Band – The Jonas Brothers!” will feature The Jonas Brothers as DJs, playing their favorite songs throughout, as well as offering backstage ins and outs and details from the Best of Both Worlds Tour, their current national tour with Hannah Montana.

STONE SOUP

Correction:  Yesterday’s Munk Yourself item, the promotional effort for the new Alvin and the Chipmunks movie, should have credited the Oddcast, Inc. with creating the Munk Yourself application and with Telescope, developing mobile voicetones.  Now go and play – it’s fun!

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Discovery Communications promotes Patrick Gates to President and GM of Discovery Commerce.  Gates, who was most recently the interim President and GM of the division, will report to Mark Hollinger, President/Global Business and Operations.  Gates will provide the strategic vision for the Discovery Commerce division, which comprises home video, licensing and direct-to-consumer sales.  His initial focus will be to develop selling strategies that align with each network’s brand and programming initiatives, with an emphasis on growing the division’s core businesses.
