Cynopsis: DIGITAL
11.20.13
Good morning. It’s Wednesday, November 20, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
The NFL and MLB have threatened to move all televised games to cable networks if Aereo is found legal, according to a recent court filing. Reuters reports that both leagues support broadcasters CBS, Fox and NBC, which are currently battling in court with the TV streaming service.
In other words: In a world where outlets like DirecTV pay the NFL around $1 billion per year to offer games to its consumers, the possibility of Aereo broadcasting them without compensating the NFL and MLB is reason for threats.
Simple.TV, the broadcast TV streaming platform, has teamed up with Broadcast Interactive Media to use BIM’s Titan TV signal prediction technology to support Simple.TV’s new personal DVR. “Consumers know that there’s a ton of great HDTV content available over the air for free,” Simply.TV CEO Mark Ely told Cynopsis. “Our interface and DVR functionality make this content as accessible as on-demand streaming apps, but adds live and recorded HDTV to the mix.”
In other words: You might think this sounds a lot like Aereo, but it’s not. That’s because Simple.TV is able to snag broadcast signals that are already provided for free to anyone who buys the SimpleTV box, versus Aereo, which works from a cloud. Also, Aereo is acting without retransmission consent, which is too close for comfort to MSO’s.
VEVO has signed a deal with Yahoo and omg! in the U.K. to add its 75,000 music videos to its video inventory. Users can access the VEVO videos and live concert specials from Yahoo Screen and omg! website.
Bravo Media announced it has paired up with online pro-chef network Kitchit to bring Top Chef into fans’ homes. Through Kitchit, viewers can enter a contest to win a dinner party cooked specifically for them by former Top Chef contestants. Eaters are encouraged to tweet dinner party ideas with the hashtag #TopChefDinner to @BravoTopChef.

Variety reports Amazon did not release specific data (similar to Netflix), but the series topped the Amazon Video chart after it made the first three episodes free on Nov. 15. The rest of the series will be available only to Amazon’s Prime service users, which costs $79 a year.
PBS Digital Studios’ Blank on Blank debuted a new video on its YouTube channel called We Knew JFK: Unheard Stories from the Kennedy Archives, yesterday. Timed to the 50th anniversary of JFK’s assassination, the new video reveals a 1965 interview with Grace Kelly discussing her relationship with the Kennedys.
British TV content destination Acorn TV is exclusively streaming the sixth season finale of Doc Martin on Nov. 25th. All previous seasons are available for streaming at www.acorn.tv and its Roku channel.
Oxygen is promoting the newest season of Best Ink by hosting a Twitter chat with the show’s host Fall Out Boy‘s Pete Wentz and fellow judges on Nov. 19 at 8 P.M. Best Ink’s Season 2 winner Teresa Sharpe will also partake in the Twitter chat, which is also sponsored by the blog Celeb Dirty Laundry.

Toys R Us is pairing up with digital video ad platform Eyeview to help retailers promote Black Friday sales with the Black Friday Booster. The technology can deliver video ads relevant to a consumer’s online purchase behavior, geo-location and demographic. Each ad will also feature a countdown clock that shows how much time is left until the big shopping day.
Apple TV has added the Yahoo Screen and PBS apps to its latest device update, as of yesterday. Those using the new apps on the Apple device will be able to access clips from Saturday Night Live, The Colbert Report and The Daily Show from Yahoo’s app, and Frontline and Nova from the PBS app.
Twitter released a recent survey of 1,000 adults showing that promoted ad products are key to reaching consumers over the holidays. The study, conducted with DB5 Research, revealed that Twitter users spend 19 percent more than average Black Friday shoppers and 14 percent more on Cyber Monday. Overall, Twitter users averaged $700 on the two mega retail days compared to non-users. CNBC reports Twitter conducted the survey to draw-in marketers to focus on specific ad campaigns for the site.
Music Choice has promoted Tom Soper to Vice President, Distribution Sales. Soper has been with Music Choice since 2007, and served as Senior Director of Advertising Sales.
