Good morning. It’s Wednesday, November 17, 2004, and this is your first early morning briefing.
CBS eked out a win on Monday night with sitcoms (including the 200th episode of Raymond) and CSI Miami, earning an overall 6.0/15 A18-49 rating according to final data from Nielsen Media Research. ABC was close behind with a 5.4/14 thanks to the football game. At 8pm NBC as usual won the hour with Fear Factor averaging a 4.3/11, beating CBS’ 8p comedy hour by two share points. Trading Spouses on Fox earned a 3.2/8, down approx 12% vs. last week. 7th Heaven on the WB won its 12-17 demo with a 4.2/13. The football back kicked off at 9p and scored a 7.1/19 overall. CBS at 9p with the previously noted episode of Raymond, earned a 6.0/14, followed by 2-1/2 Men average of 6.4/15, building on its lead-in. Las Vegas held nearly its full lead=in, posting a 4.4/10. The Swan on Fox was up week to week by approx 7%, earning a 3.4/8 for the hour. At 10p CSI Miami blew away any hoax on NBC, by tallying up an 8.4/20. The hoax isn’t fooling anyone at 2.7/7.
ABC has announced at least part of their 1st qtr / post football season schedule beginning with the return of Alias on Wednesday nights after Lost. The show debuts on January 5 with a 2-hour 9-11p premiere. Monday nights will be reality wall to wall beginning with EM: Home Edition – How’d They Do That (Endemol USA) at 8pm (as of January 10), The Bachelorette (Next Ent/Telepictures) with ex-Firestone fiance Jen Schefft at 9p and launching with a 2-hour 9-11p premiere on January 10, as the show moves from lovely Southern California to NYC. Then on January 17, Supernanny (Ricochet Ltd.) kicks off in the 10p time period.
The WB‘s freshman drama series Summerland (Spelling TV) which debuted last June 1, will return in January, though a date/time period has not been announced.
Casting / Development / Production
Comedy Central has announced a half dozen projects currently in development:
two Hollywood Entertainment styled magazine series, both designed to “skewer the self importance of Hollywood” called Gone Hollywood (Pariah Television) and The Hollywood Show from Brian Unger and Heidi Clements.
Michael Ian Black, Michael Showalter and David Wain have written adn will star in a scripted adaptation of their stage show Stella.
In the judge/court show genre, Take it to the Bitch House has commedienne Sommore on the streets settling disputes too small even for small claims court (Reville Ent).
Con stars Skylar Stone as a person who can con his way in and out of anything he wants (exec prod by Ston, Rick DeOlivera, Matt Sloan and Chris Cox).
Happy Game Fun Bomb follows a group of comedian gamers who play video games with real people via satellite from around the country (exec prod by Rob Cohen).
Fox has ordered up a half dozen scripts from 19 Entertainment for a US version of the hugely popular UK series, EastEnders. The original UK series airs on BBC America in a ppv deal with the Dish Network.
ABC will revisit its project starring Jennifer Love Hewitt project titled In the Game (Touchstone/Handprint) as a producer of sports programming, who suddenly finds herself in front of the camera instead of behind it. ABC originally looked at this project for fall 2004.
Also in development at ABC is a drama project titled The Flyover States (Touchstone TV) about a woman who moves her life back to her hometown in Arkansas with her two teenage sons, per Variety.
Here come the judge … here come the judge… 20th Television has a new 30m daily strip syndicated court show for next season with Judge Alex E. Ferrer, of the Florida Circuit Court. Also news from 20th – Divorce Court has been renewed for a seventh season in 64 markets, representing 65% of the country, for the 05-06 season. Check with your 20th rep for more info on Judge Ferrer – I’m sure there’s a whole flip chart presentation they can do for you.
Debmar Studios has picked up the domestic rights to Farscape and will offer it into syndication for Fall 2005, offering a straight barter deal. The deal includes 88 episodes, though will not include the four hour finale movie, per Variety.
ABC‘s intro to Monday Night Football has the network apologizing, and the NFL calling it both “inappropriate adn unsuitable.” If you missed it, Desperate Housewife Nicolette Sheridan appears before Philadelphia Eagles Terrell Owens in the locker room, ostensibly wearing just a towel. Then she drops the towel (we see her only from the behind, waist up) and asks him to skip the game for her; he agrees to be late. ABC received complaints, and has now apologized.
How did WOIO do after airing a heavily promoted piece in its late news that included nudity … no blurs, no pixels, no full frontal, but nudity just the same? It set a new record for the station – 17.1/30 overnight HH rating, surpassing the previous record of 13.6/23 for a post-Super Bowl newscast. Indignant at the FCC’s seemingly muddy dealings with viewer complaints of obscenity, not to mention being in the midst of the November sweep, News Director Steve Doerr did what nearly any news director would do – sent his anchor in to cover and participate in a Spencer Tunick performance art photograph of hundreds of naked bodies.

The History Channel presents This Day in History: 1558: Queen Mary I of England dies and is succeeded by her 25-year-old half-sister, Elizabeth. Elizabeth I’s long reign was arguably the most prosperous and glorious in English history. It was marked by the staging of many of Shakespeare’s plays, the voyages of Sir Francis Drake and Sir Walter Ralegh, and the beginning of English efforts to settle the New World. After the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588, English naval superiority erased the threat of a Spanish invasion, insuring the island nation’s peace and prosperity.
