Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, May 7, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Recording artists and actors Jonas Brothers will star in a Disney Digital 3D feature film in 2009.  The movie will feature footage of the three siblings from their upcoming Burning Up concert tour.  The Jonas Brothers, who are Hollywood Records artists, were featured in this year’s 3D movie Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour, as well as several Disney Channel shows and specials, including the upcoming original movie, Camp Rock (June 20), and the new series J.O.N.A.S (fall 2008).

Director Chris Wedge (Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who, Ice Age, Robots) will helm the live-action movie The Invention of Hugo Cabret for Graham King’s GK Films, Johnny Depp’s Infinitum Nihil and Warner Bros., per Variety.  Based on Brian Selznick’s book of the same name published by Scholastic Press, the screenplay will be penned by John Logan (The Aviator, Gladiator, Sweeney Todd).  If you haven’t taken a look at the book you ought to, it is beautiful.  Set in the 1930s, The Invention of Hugo Cabret features 300+ illustrations that help tell the story of Hugo, an orphaned boy who lives in a Paris train station where he tends to the clocks.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Entertainment Rights inks deals with YouTube, Joost and Babelgum to provide all three digital platforms with a selection of its kid/family-targeted animated content with the launch of Retro Heroes, a new free-to-view channel.  Under the deal, YouTube debuts a version of Retro Heroes that features short-form (2 and 5 minute) webisodes from ER’s library, while Joost and Babelgum will also introduce Retro Heroes, but will feature selected long-form programming.  Entertainment Rights programming featured as part of these partnerships include, He-Man, She-Ra, Trapdoor, Felix the Cat, Rocky & Bullwinkle, The Archies, Fat Albert and Casper the Friendly Ghost.

BusRadio teams with SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) to feature public service announcements to kids/tweens/teens via BusRadio radio network.  The messaging aims to empower kids/teens to make informed and positive decisions in their lives, particularly as they relate to drugs, drinking, driving under the influence, and teen violence of all sorts.

This week marks EA Casual Entertainment Label’s, a division of Electronic Arts, release of Boom Blox for Wii, the first game under the three-game collaboration between EA and director/producer Steven Spielberg.  The K8-12 targeted game will also be available from May 8 in Europe, May 13 across Asia, and May 22 in Japan for Wii.  The game is rated E for Everyone Boom Blox is also available across major carriers for mobile phones.  Boom Blox is rated E for Everyone by the ESRB, 3+ by PEGI, and 6+ by the USK.

THQ Inc. and DreamWorks Animation SKG, Inc. have entered into an exclusive video game licensing pact to develop and publish game titles based on DreamWorks’ 2010 fall animated movie, Master Mind (working title), a superhero satire that is set for release on November 5, 2010.  Under the new deal THQ holds the exclusive rights to publish interactive games based on the DreamWorks Animation property for all console and handheld systems, wireless devices and Windows PCs.

Hitting the stores in North America this week is Speed Racer: The Videogame for Wii and Nintendo DS.  Published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, the game is of course based on Warner Bros. Pictures upcoming movie Speed Racer, which opens this Friday, May 9.  Virtuos developed the game for Nintendo DS, while Sidhe Interactive developed the game for Wii.  Oh, for those Wii’ers out there the Wii version of the game is one of the first to be compatible with the Wii Wheel.  Speed Racer: The Videogame carries an ESRB rating of E for Everyone.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Merlin Entertainments Group, a visitor attraction operator, has entered into a partnership with Tatweer, a member of Dubai Holdings to create Legoland Dubailand.  Scheduled to open at the end of 2011, Legoland Dubailand will be a 3 million square-foot theme park within Dubailand.

Disney Consumer Products introduces a new line of products based on the new Disney and Walden Media feature films The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, which releases May 16:
The Prince Caspian toy line, created by Play Along, a unit of Jakks Pacific, and features detailed action figures (3.75-inch and 7 inch) of 25 different characters from the movie, playsets (e.g. Deluxe Castle Playset) and a range of role-play items (e.g. Gauntlet Crossbow with foam arrows, helmets, daggers, and three Swords of Narnia, etc.).
Disney Interactive Studios will release The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian video game for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 2, Wii, Nintendo DS and Windows PC.  The game is rated T for Teens.  Traveller’s Tales developed the Prince Caspian video game.  The Nintendo DS version of the game, developed by Disney’s Fall Line Studio, debuts DGamer, Disney Interactive studios’ new community function, where players can earn content and interact with one another on Nintendo DS via Nintendo Wi-Fi or on computers through Disney.com.
Prince Caspian collectibles from Weta Collectibles (limited edition detailed statues, mini busts, mini helmets) and Robert Tonner’s Tonner Character Figures (13-19 inch detailed figures with hand painted faces) will be available at collectible and comic book stores from July 2008.

STONE SOUP

XM Satellite radio’s XMKids teams with Children’s Miracle Network for its second annual XMKids Traveling Roadshow, which will air on XMKids (XM 116).  Hosted by the channel’s regular on-air team, the broadcast tour runs May 12-24 and will feature shows from 11 different children’s hospitals nationwide, and concluding with a free concert on the National Mall in Washington, DC.  The XMKids Traveling Roadshow supports efforts, along with Wal-Mart and Sam’s Clubs, to raise $10 million during May for Children’s Miracle Network.  More information and a full schedule can be found at www.xmradio.com/roadshow .
