Cynopsis: DIGITAL
05/04/10
Good morning, it’s Tuesday, May 4, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski is leaning toward maintaining the status quo to keep broadband services largely deregulated, according to a report in the Washington Post, citing “three sources.” The U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit ruled that the FCC lacked the authority to apply sanctions to Comcast in a ruling last month, leading to speculation that the commission may seek to reclassify ISPs as part of its net neutrality agenda. The FCC is expected to decide its position the coming days and Chairman Genachowski himself represents the swing vote on the five-member FCC. The report drew quick responses from both sides of the issue with the WGA, East , for one, calling on the FCC to reconsider a reclassification action in order to “fulfill its obligations to the American people – to consumers and content creators alike.”
Dish Network is planning to launch its own “TV Everywhere” site later this summer allowing subscribers to watch network shows from an authentication-required website, per Multichannel News.
Taking a chapter from the ESPN playbook when negotiating for new carriage deals, Univision is leveraging its FIFA World Cup rights to secure carriage of its new HD networks. Comcast has made room for HD feeds of Univision and TeleFutura, along with NBC’s Telemundo HD, in its Northern California channel line up in advance of the matches. All three HD networks will be available from May 5 throughout most of Comcast’s Bay Area systems as part of its Limited Basic HD package with Central California getting access to Univision HD and TeleFutura HD.
A Conception Story: Six Journeys To Pregnancy is a new 7-month weekly web series on TLC.com sponsored by home pregnancy and ovulation kit maker First Response that shares 6 personal stories chronicling the trials of tribulations of getting pregnant. Video diaries from 6 women will be produced and edited by TLC, Discovery Digital Media and First Response to form a single short-form webisode per week.
Full service Content Delivery Network Contendo announced it closed on a $12 million round of series C funding led by Tenaya Capital and joined by initial investors Sequoia Capital and Benchmark Capital, brining the total the company has raised to $22 million. Contendo’s “Acceleration” platform has focused on improving the ability of publishers to deliver content that can’t be cached and includes a software solution to help maximize cost savings by utilizing multiple CDNs across different markets. The funding will be used to scale its business operations in the U.S. and Europe (where a new office is opening this month in Berlin) according to co-founder and CEO Ronni Zehavi. “We’re working on developing more features that are tailor made for specific verticals,” he said, including online retail, e-commerce and an upcoming entertainment-related application.
Anime video streaming site Crunchyroll reported compounded quarter-to-quarter revenue growth of 40% over the past 5 quarters with Q1 2010 revenue up 250% from a year ago. The S.F.-based ad supported/subscription site, which licenses content from many of Japan and Korea’s major Anime producers, claims an audience of 5.5 million monthly uniques, who racked up 21.8 million video views in March.
Online video portal blip.tv is launching a branded entertainment reality series with 7-Eleven tracking the nationwide road trips of two teams who rely on 7-Eleven stores for their daily needs. Daily webisodes on 711roadtrip.com, Twitter tweets and Facebook posts will track their progress, with product placements coming from a variety of partners including Dr. Pepper, Nabisco and Oscar Mayer. The shows will be distributed to multiple sites and platforms including iTunes, Yahoo!, AOL Video, TiVo, Sony Bravia, Verizon FiOS and the Roku Digital Video Player. San Francisco’s Happy Little Guillotine (HLG) Films is producing the reality clips with blip.tv and 7-Eleven.
Continuing with its policy of improving transparency in online advertising, the IAB released a new 19-page primer outlining how data is utilized to serve online ads. The document outlines best practices and includes definitions of different types of prevalent targeting methods including behavioral targeting, contextual targeting and search retargeting.
FourthWall Media announced today that the OneLink San Juan cable system in Puerto Rico has successfully deployed its Ad Widgets advanced advertising system across its digital subscriber base. The system, enabling viewers to request more info, click-to-call to contact local merchants, etc., guides media sales personnel through forms where they input an order and select options that automatically bind proven applications to the appropriate commercials to make them interactive.
Apple may become the target of a Dept. of Justice and FTC antitrust inquiry into its practice of requiring developers to utilize proprietary programming tools to develop applications for devices such as the iPhone and the iPad, reports the NYPost. Apple maintains that such policies are in place to insure the quality and suitability of the apps released on its platforms.
Movie Gallery’s brick-and-mortar video rental chain Hollywood Video is closing its remaining stores over the next couple of months, per the WSJ. Movie Gallery, which filed for bankruptcy in Feb. for a second time, will shutter all 2,415 U.S. Movie Gallery, Hollywood Video, and Game Crazy locations, with an additional 19,000 employees expected to lose their jobs.
4G WiMax venture Clear expanded its footprint to a 271-mile area in Central Pennsylvania including the cities of Harrisburg, Reading, Lancaster and York.
Interest in interactive TV applications is growing among consumers across several varieties of advertising and genres of programming – to the point that some 17% of TV subscribers would consider switching providers to get better interactive features, according to a new online survey by Harris Interactive, commissioned by iTV company Ensequence. Conducted in March among 2,315 18+ adults, the survey found that:
- 55% of drama viewers want to interact and 30% of drama viewers would like to set recordings and reminders for upcoming episodes
- 74% of reality viewers want to interact and 55% of reality show viewers would vote for contestants
- 70% of sports viewers would like to interact while watching a sporting event (up 5pp from 2007), and 40% of sports viewers would like to get scores, news and information from other live games and matches
- 73% of viewers would like to interact with TV commercials for a product they are interested in using their remote control
- 58% of viewers would request free samples (up 9pp from 2007)
- 45% of viewers who subscribe to a paid television service are at least somewhat likely to purchase a product from a 30 or 60-second spot

More than 1 million Apple iPads have been sold as of Friday, only 28 days after its initial release – a milestone that took the iPhone 74 days. iPad users have downloaded over 12 million apps from the App Store and over 1.5 million ebooks from the iBookstore. The new 3G version of the iPad released on Friday sold briskly over the weekend with Apple Stores in several large cities reporting that they ran out of the new models.
Vizio Internet Apps and Roku‘s line of digital video players have signed deals with NBA Digital to feature the “NBA Game Time” app on their platforms, The free app features video highlights of every game and real-time access to game summaries, complete player statistics, news and additional info. The NBA says more than 1.7 million Game Time apps have been downloaded on mobile devices since April 2009.
Ensequence has developed an EBIF-specified interactive app for Showtime to enhance the network’s Boxing and Mixed Martial Arts HD telecasts. The Showtime Sports app, launching initially on Verizon FiOS systems, provides synchronized access to fighter stats and profiles, live polling, a trivia game, a fight calendar and control over custom widget settings.
Beating Rhapsody to the punch, cloud-based music service Thumbplay Music has launched an Android app offering on-demand access to the entire 8 million Thumbplay catalog. The app, free for subscribers who pay the $10/month subscription fee, plans to add an offline play feature in subsequent versions (available now on Thumbplay’s BlackBerry version) but the current Android app requires a data connection.
Moving fast to replace Ed Wilson, Tribune Co. elevated COO Jerry Kersting to President of Tribune Broadcasting. Jerry joined Tribune as EVP in 2008 and prior to that, served as EVP/CFO of Clear Channel Radio since 1999.
Former Microsoft VP and MSN CFO Bruce A. Jaffe has been appointed Chief Financial Officer and EVP/Corporate Development of Glam Media. He is charged with global oversight and management of corporate financial strategy, as well as corporate development, reporting to Chairman and CEO Samir Arora.
San Francisco-based marketing services firm Catalyst S+F hired former EVP/Managing Director of VivaKi Ventures Tim Hanlon as a Partner, responsible for venture investment and advisory strategies. Tim will also serve as the lead consultant on advanced media issues.
FishBowl Worldwide Media hired Beth Greenwald as SVP/Unscripted Development and Jennifer Gwartz as SVP/Scripted Development. Both will report to Susan Levison, EVP/Creative Affairs.
Are you among the plethora of Facebook users who are concerned with the company’s new data sharing practices? Now there’s an app that will help you safeguard your data. The Green Safe Facebook app from internet marketing consultant/developer LJ Jones is a nifty workaround that you add like any other app. After agreeing to allow it to “Import Your Data,” Green Safe will lock up your personal information to protect other developers and marketers from accessing it. The start-up is not innocent in all of this – the Green Safe site states it may use your info to serve ads that target your interests. But LJ himself, a senior media planner at Salt Lake-based interactive agency Studeo, is a privacy advocate who promises not to share, trade, or sell that info with anybody. Yes, you’re damned if you or damned if you don’t here, I suppose. But it’s kind of interesting to see the Facebook application platform used against the behemoth, if for no other reason than to raise awareness of the privacy issue.
