Good morning. It’s Wednesday, May 31, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.
Superman will return, tho two days earlier than Warner Bros. has originally planned. Superman Returns will now open on June 28, two days prior to the original release date. That of course means it has ten full days to build up box office receipts before Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest opens on July 7.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
PBS Kids will get its first-ever live on-air host when it introduces Lori Holton Nash on its new 2-hour preschool block premiering September 4, 2006. Nash together with an animated sidekick, will guide viewers through the block comprised of four PBS Kids series including new series, Curious George narrated by William H. Macy, and It’s A Big Big World, as well as existing programs Clifford The Big Red Dog and Dragon Tales. Additionally, Nash will appear at events across the country and visit local PBS member stations. The new PBS Kids block is part of PBS Kids Next Generation Media, an effort to define public TV’s role in the kid’s digital media range. PBS Kids Go! Channel, a 24/7 digital service targeted to early elementary school kids, is slated to launch in October 2006.
Varsity Media Group, Inc., the teen-centric multi-media company, and MobiTV, Inc. have launched Varsity TV on MobiTV Service. Under the partnership between VMG and MobiTV, 1+ million national and international MobiTV subscribers on carriers such as Sprint, Cingular, Alltel, 3, Orange UK, Bell Canada, Rogers and TELUS Mobility will be able to watch Varsity TV, VMG’s teen-targeted 24/7 indie cable/satellite network.
HandHeld Entertainment, parent company of the ZVUE handheld media player and website, has teamed-up with ADV Films, a North American producer/distributor of anime videos, to make ADV’s anime catalog available for download at www.ZVUE.com. ADV Films is aligned with the cable network, Anime Network. Additional recent content deals for HandHeld Entertainment’s ZTV digital download store include pacts with IMG (fashion shows), Music Video Distributors (punk rock videos), eMusic, Sunflower Entertainment (Latin music videos), Worldvision Cinema (1,500 movies and TV titles), Fun Little Movies, TotalVid (extreme sports videos), SortyPipe.com (indie films), and LikeTelevision (TV shows, cartoons).
MORE KIDS STUFF
Fremantle International Distribution inked a number of international sales for Falcon Beach (26 eps + 2-hr pilot), its new one-hour drama targeted to older teens, at the LA Screenings. Falcon Beach has been picked up by M6 (France), with a deal currently in the works with a terrestrial UK broadcaster. Additionally, the series has been acquired in Scandinavia by TV2 (Denmark), TV4 (Sweden), TV Norge (SBS Channel) (Norway), Channel 4, (Finland), as well as by Nederland 3 (Netherlands) and IBC Sirkus (Iceland). Falcon Beach is produced by Insight Productions and Original Pictures, in conjunction with Global Television and ABC Family USA. A coming of age story, the series follows a group of young 20-somethings in a lakeside resort town, Falcon Beach, where there are lots of fun, friends, family, summer romances, and planning for the next step in their lives. Falcon Beach premieres in the US on ABC Family, June 5.
Granada International has sold the exclusive TV interview with the Royal Highnesses The Prince of Wales, Prince William and Prince Harry – The Three Princes: 30 Years of the Prince’s Trust, which aired on ITV in the UK on Saturday, 20 May, to a number of international broadcasters including NBC (US), CBC (Canada), Network 7 (Australia), TVNZ (New Zealand), MBC/Al Hurra (Middle East), TV2 (Denmark), TV2 (Norway), YLE (Finland), VMM (Belgium) and Talpa (Netherlands). The 23 minute program features Prince Charles, Prince William and Prince Harry being interviewed by well known TV hosts Ant and Dec. The majority of revenue from the international sales of the program will go to the Prince’s Trust, founded in 1976 to help support and change the lives of disadvantaged young people in the UK. Granada International is also distributing The Prince’s Trust 30th Birthday Live (90 min), a concert filmed live on the same day at the Tower of London and featuring the likes of Annie Lennox, Pink, Ozzy Osbourne, Lionel Richie, Bee Gees Barry and Robin Gibb, McFly, the Sugababes and Will Young.
“Audobots Transform and Roll out!” And so they shall this November when Sony BMG Music Entertainment releases the 20th Anniversary Special Edition DVD of Transformers: The Movie. The release of the animated movie is chock full of extras including previously unseen footage, exclusive interviews and interactive games. The movie features the voice of Orson Welles in his final role, as well as Eric Idle, Judd Nelson, Leonard Nimoy, Casey Kasem, Robert Stack, John Moschitta, Peter Cullen, and Frank Welker. Coinciding with the release of the 20th Anniversary Special Edition DVD, Hasbro will introduce its More Than Meets The Eye Transformers Classics line of figures at retail. The DreamWorks live action version of Transformers: The Movie, executive produced by Steven Spielberg, directed by Michael Bay from a script by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, and staring Jon Voigt, Josh Duhamel, Michael Clarke Duncan and Shia LeBeouf, among others, is currently in filming in New Mexico and slated for release about a year from now on July 4, 2007.
Visual Entertainment (VE) signed a multi-year distribution agreement with VOY to distribute film and television programming for DVD release. Initial releases are expected in major US retailers this summer. The first VOY DVD series released under the agreement will be VOY Baby, an infant line for Latinos and non-Latinos who want their children to learn Spanish. Additional volumes of the series will be released in the coming months. The documentary Chivas: Si Se Puede (Yes You Can) will also be released in the summer.
This week marks HarperCollins’ publication of Chasing the Jaguar, a new tween targeted mystery book about Martika Galvez, a young bicultural detective. The book is written and created by actress Michele Dominguez Greene (LA Law, The Unit) who shares Martika’s bicultural experience. Martika lives with her mother in a gang-ridden neighborhood; she is close with her papi, is an independent kid and a good student. The book picks up just as Martika has just celebrated her quiceanera (15th birthday) when she discovers that she is a curandera, or witch, who descends from a long line of medicine women, and throughout the book she learns to control the psychic gifts and foils a kidnapping plot in the process.
MTV News will offer both pre and post show coverage of the 2006 MTV Movie Awards both on-air as well as through broadband network, MTV Overdrive (movieawardslmtv.com), each with its own content. The MTV News pre-show coverage begins June 8, 8:30p with celebrity guest hosts Rihanna and Pete Wentz of Fall Out Boys along with MTV News correspondents. Additionally, the pre-show will feature sneak peeks of upcoming movies including Miami Vice, Pirates of the Caribbean 2 and Superman Returns, as well as Clerks 2, the latter only on MTV Overdrive. The post show coverage will include a performance by the group Wolfmother, on TV and MTV Overdrive. Hosted by Jessica Alba, the 2006 MTV Movie Awards will be recorded June 3 at Sony Pictures Studios, and will debut on MTV, June 8 at 9p. The show will be seen in 171 countries/territories via 50 music programming services, and in 23 languages in 479.5+ million HH.
The sitcom Benson joins the TV Land programming line-up with a 48-hour marathon beginning Saturday, June 3 at 6a. The Soap spin-off moves to its regular M-F at 11p timeslot beginning June 5. Benson ran on ABC from 1979-1986.

June marks the launch of Nintendo’s new Touch Generations brand, which will serve as the home for Nintendo’s more casual Nintendo DS game titles. In an ongoing effort to invite gamers from all demos and provide games for players of all levels the new Touch Generation will include those games that anyone can pick up and play regardless of experience. The first new game titles under Touch Generation include Big Brain Academy, Magnetica, Sudoku Gridmaster, as well as existing games such as Nintendogs, Tetris DS, Brain Age and True Swing Golf.
Paramount Pictures and Planetwide Games, Inc., a provider of proprietary game software and branded online video games, will release Nacho Libre Comic Book Creator Interactive Entertainment Software. Based on the upcoming movie Nacho Libre, the Nacho Libre Comic Book Creator Interactive Entertainment Software will be available for digital download beginning June 8, 2006 via the Planetwide Games website. The Special Edition retail box edition of Nacho Libre Comic Book Creator Drag n’ Drop Comics software will launch at select retailers in the US, Canada and Mexico following the June 16, 2006 release of Nacho Libre in the US. Nacho Libre is a Nickelodeon Movies/Black & White Production of a Jared Hess Film, presented by Paramount Pictures.
Fox has re-launched the Eragon movie website having added cast information, AIM and MSN buddy icons and downloadable wallpaper as well as an Eragon mobile network community. All of the elements that were previously available at the site, such as the Lexicon and links to Eragon information remain in tact. Eragon is slated for release December 15.
EXECUTIVE MOVES
Bill Clark has been appointed EVP/GM, Anchor Bay Entertainment, a division of IDT Entertainment. Clark will oversee IDT’s home entertainment business and the day-to-day operations of Anchor Bay Entertainment and its anime subsidiary, Manga Entertainment. He will report directly to IDT Entertainment’s COO, John Hyde. Previously Clark served in numerous senior operating, COO and CFO roles with EMI Recorded Music, The Walt Disney Studios, Universal Studios Home Entertainment, Spelling Entertainment, CBS and Ventura Entertainment Enterprises.
John Shelton has been named SVP/Sales and Distribution, DirecTV, Inc., reporting to John Suranyi, President/Sales and Service. Shelton will be responsible for managing DirecTV’s distribution network and the development of sales programs for its independent dealer network, consumer electronics retailers, the Commercial and Multiple Dwelling Unit segments and Special Markets. Prior to this Shelton spent the last 13-years with Nextel Communications, where he served as North Region vice president since 2003, responsible for business in the Northeast and Midwest and was key in supporting initiatives including the launch of Boost Mobile, data services and sales force automation.
Cindy Elfenbein has been named Executive Director/Retail Development and Promotions, Sony Pictures Consumer Products, Inc. She will report to SVP, Juli Boylan. Elfenbein will be responsible for managing retail efforts for Sony Pictures Consumer Products, including theatrical properties Open Season, Spider-Man 3, and Surf’s Up as well as the new preschool TV series, It’s A Big Big World. A veteran of the retail and licensing industry, prior to this Elfenbein was VP/Retail Business Development, MGA Entertainment where she was key in launching the Brats Couture apparel Line. Previously, she served as Executive Director, DIC Entertainment and Sr. Account Executive, Warner Bros. Consumer Products Division.
National Geographic Television International has named Karen Vermeulen head of sales for kids programming. Based in London Vermeulen is NGTI’s first dedicated kids sales person. Vermeulen will also work closely with National Geographic Kids’ Programming & Production president Donna Friedman Meir, to drive the development of National Geographic’s kid business. Most recently, Vermeulen toiled for Entertainment Rights as territory manager UK, Ireland and German-speaking Europe, responsible for maximizing TV, new media and DVD sales for a range of properties including Postman Pat, Basil Brush, Little Red Tractor and Barbie. Additionally, she managed the strategic rollout of licensing and merchandising for core brands in Germany.
