Good morning, it’s Wednesday, May 26, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Best Buy announced a deal with TiVo to integrate the DVR maker’s lauded software into the store’s Insignia brand of TVs, allowing the retailer to begin marketing broadband video services of its own through a planned digital storefront. Best Buy will license TiVo’s software for search, navigation and connection (sorry, no full DVR functionality) to enable Insignia TVs to access content from a number of premium video distributors Tivo has struck deals with including YouTube, Netflix, Amazon Video on Demand and Blockbuster’s On Demand. Rival Wal-mart acquired Vudu earlier this year and is expected to aggressively promote Vudu’s integrated platform of services in its stores.

Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) announced that a la carte programming from HBO is now available on the PlayStation 3 and handheld PSP system, the first gaming systems to offer HBO original television programming. Individual episodes of shows such as The Sopranos, Sex and the City, The Wire, Rome and Da Ali G Show are available at the premium price of $3/each.
HBO is also harnessing social networking apps to generate excitement around the release of the Blu-ray set for Season 2 of True Blood. Utilizing the Live Feed feature available on broadband-connected players, users can upload a photo of themselves, which will change in response to the chosen experience and the number of episodes watched. (Vampire images of viewers will get more pasty and drip more blood as the season progresses.) Viewers can also post status updates directly to their Facebook pages and Twitter accounts, share favorite scenes, browse the latest news updates and collect virtual gifts.
Tribune Broadcasting has signed a long-term affiliation agreement to air MGM’s THIS TV on Tribune’s digital channels. THIS TV will pick up Tribune stations as new affiliates in New York, Miami, St. Louis, San Diego and Grand Rapids and renew existing agreements with stations in LA, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Denver, Indianapolis/Bloomington, Hartford and New Orleans.
Comcast SportsNet Chicago has redesigned its localized CSNChicago.com site to add improved social functionality via sharing buttons and Facebook Connect. The site also struck a partnership with SB Nation to share a number of Windy City-themed blogs. CSNChicago.com features a wealth of Chicago sports video including team video pages for the Blackhawks, Bulls, Cubs, White Sox and Bears.
San Francisco-based live streaming start-up Ustream launched a pro-sumer Global Production Services Department, offering live broadband video event coverage for as little as $3,000/day.
Greg Grunberg’s Mobile coupon application Yowza!! announced the launch of an Affiliate Program to add to its roster of small business clients by offering a 25% commission to those who bring in new retailers, restaurants or other merchant partners.
Internet Broadcasting struck a strategic partnership with automated local display advertising platform iPromote to automate the placement of ads on IB’s local station partner websites. iPromote’s technology automatically scans a business’ website for important content (i.e. images, text, logos, headlines, etc.) and puts together professional advertising packages available in five different ad sizes.
Recognizing the growth of the multicultural market, the IAB has replaced its Hispanic Committee with the new IAB Multicultural Council to focus on issues impacting marketing and advertising within the multicultural marketplace, including audience measurement, multicultural strategies and toolsets marketers need to address the needs of the marketplace.
Location-driven ad platform Lat49 and real estate-themed publisher Move Network struck a deal to enable advertisers on Realtor.com to target their ads based on users’ physical location or home search criteria. Under the terms of the agreement, Move will publish Lat49 banner ads on its network of sites and resell advertising across Lat49’s network.
As expected, Google launched a new browser plugin allowing users to opt out of its analytics service. (The beta version of the add-on is available here for Internet Explorer, Firefox and Chrome.) The company says its analytics unit will no longer collect key information about publishers’ visitors, including their IP addresses, the keywords they used to land on a site, the time spent on a page and the referring URLs.
The Open Mobile Video Coalition officially unveiled its Mobile DTV broadcasting solution to a gathering of lawmakers, broadcasters and D.C.-area VIPs on Monday, with 9 area broadcasters participating in the trial. TV stations are now transmitting a mix of local news, select scripted network TV programming, syndicated talk shows and music programming to demonstrate the service with Harris Interactive and Rentrak teaming to track interactions including polling and interactive advertising. Consumers in the Washington D.C. DMA will be able to buy Mobile DTV-enabled devices such as handheld players and netbooks beginning this fall.
Internet and mobile video technology firm Envivio announced that Portugal Telecom (PT) has selected its Three Screens delivery platform to support the commercial rollout of “MEO@PC” an IPTV service powered by Microsoft MediaRoom for delivery to PCs.
ComScore unveiled a new methodology to measure the effectiveness of digital advertising. “dEffx Smart Control” is based on mix modeling techniques designed to better measure advanced ad formats including homepage takeovers, integrated placements and specific audience buys. The system looks at the change in consumer response (either attitudinal or behavioral) by varying frequency of advertising exposure using a Bayesian regression model, from which the “control” response (i.e. frequency = 0) is derived.
Following the 2010 U.S. Census count, Hispanics are expected to finally become more of a year-long focus for marketers with the Hispanic population expected to reach 16% of the overall population and growing faster than any demographic group, according to a new IAB Study on Latinos Online. Hispanic buying power is believed to be growing twice as fast as non-Hispanics and the ethnic group over-indexes in a variety of categories:
- 30 million Hispanics are online the in the U.S. (nearly 60% of the population), jumping to 39 million or 70% by 2014 and growing at a rate 4x than non-Hispanic audiences
- Hispanic adult internet users are 8 years younger on ave. and live in larger households
- Online Hispanics tend to wield strong influence over household purchases
- Hispanics outpace non-Hispanics in turning online for news, entertainment and socializing
- Hispanics are more avid users of wireless services and broadband both at home and on the road
Plasma display TVs have been losing ground to LCD models, which accounted for about 90% of all flat-panel TV shipments last year and are expected to widen that margin in 2010, according to research firm DisplaySearch. 2009 LCD TV average selling prices fell twice as fast as they did in 2008, mainly due to a reduction in panel prices that resulted from massive over-supply in Q4’08 and Q1’09. However, plasma displays could be poised to make a comeback as 3D TVs become more popular as their faster response time is better suited to display 3D images.
Just as the iPad is set to go on sale in the UK and several other European countries, Dell introduced its own tablet computer called the Streak, initially available at select outlets in the UK from June and scheduled for release in the U.S. later this summer. The 5″ touchscreen Streak runs on Google’s Android OS and utilized the ARM-based 1GHz Snapdragon processor built by Qualcomm. It ships with a 5 MP front-facing camera, can connect the internet via Wi-Fi or 3G and will support over-the-air updates including platform upgrades and the upcoming Adobe Flash 10.1 version of Android 2.2 due out later this year. No word yet on price.
Mvix‘ expensive new line of HDHome set top/gaming devices running on the Windows 7 Media Center platform are designed to be an all purpose hub for viewing TV, watching Blu-rays, playing games and browsing and storing broadband video from providers including Netflix and Hulu. Swappable HDD bays allow you to configure the box to your needs. The 2-bay version is priced at $999 and features wireless N broadband connectivity, a TV Tuner and a BD Drive. The $1600 model features a faster dual-core Athlon processor and four drive bays for even more HDTV storage.
Days before Steve Jobs is expected to unveil the new iPhone, Wal-mart cut the price of Apple‘s camcorder-embedded iPhone 3GS to $97.
National Geographic launched The GeoBee Challenge iPhone app, just in time for the May 26 championship finals of the 22nd annual National Geographic Bee. The quiz app is selling on iTunes for $1.99 for the iPhone and iPod Touch, and is planned for release on the iPad for $3.99 at a later date.
Robbie Bach, head of Microsoft’s Entertainment Division in charge of the Xbox and Zune music players, announced he will retire from the company in the fall. Bach has been with Microsoft since 1988 and has run the Entertainment & Devices division since it was created in 2005. As part of the reorganization, Games SVP Don Mattrick will continue to lead the Interactive Entertainment Business and SVP Andy Lees will continue to lead the Mobile Communications Business, both reporting directly to CEO Steve Ballmer effective July 1. Microsoft also said J Allard, current SVP of Design and Development for the Entertainment & Devices division, will also leave the company but remain available as an advisor. Finally, David Treadwell, Corporate VP/Live Platform Services, will take a new position leading the core technology organization for the Interactive Entertainment Business, reporting to Don Mattrick.
Comcast Entertainment Group has upped its contract with Neal Tiles, who will continue to serve as President of G4 for another 3 years. Neal will continue to report to Ted Harbert, President & CEO, Comcast Entertainment Group.
Eamon Javers will be joining CNBC as a Washington Reporter covering lobbying and regulatory affairs, effective June 14 and based at CNBC’s Washington DC bureau. He will appear on CNBC’s Business Day programming and on CNBC.com.
Allison Schlueter has been promoted to VP/Digital Marketing for the Island Def Jam Music Group. She will report to Jon Vanhala, SVP/Digital & New Business Development, Island Def Jam Music Group.
Mark Teitell has been appointed GM of cross-industry consortium Digital Entertainment Content Ecosystem to help drive strategy, business development and operations.
Comcast Sportsnet Chicago named Joe Marino to the newly created position of Digital Sales Manager. Joe will be responsible for all facets of digital ad sales for CSNChicago.com.
Keeping up with the Jones is important in the tech space but it’s important not to pay through the nose to acquire the flavor of the day. (For instance, AOL CEO Tim Armstrong admitted in TechCrunch Disrupt panel yesterday that the Bebo acquisition was “major distraction,” by which he meant he could sure use that $850 million today.) Yahoo has found a way to get into the location-based social networking space likely for a lot cheaper than having to pay for Foursquare. Yahoo has acquired Koprol, a social network geared for mobile users based in Jakarta, Indonesia that allows people make friends, share photos, check in and find nearby locations on the go. Koprol has taken off quickly in its region because it’s designed to work on any phone that has a mobile web browser. Its Social City Guides have proven to be especially popular, acting as a mobile Yelp by aggregating reviews. Yahoo said it will work on improving Koprol’s service, which will include rolling out a new application for the BlackBerry, and expects to unveil apps for other mobile devices in the near future.
