Good morning. It’s Wednesday, May 25, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
PBS introduces the first line of PBS Kids preschool toys designed to extend off-screen learning. The toys will be available exclusively online at the newly launched PBS Kids Shop ( www.pbskidsshop.com ), until this fall when the line will then be available on at other online and brick and mortar retailers. The new online shop, which was developed by PBS and Brand-Xpand, will also offer educational books, games, DVDs, customizable backpacks, water bottles, room decor, apparel and birthday party supplies, and other products based on PBS Kids programs. Proceeds from the PBS Kids Shop will help fund free, educational PBS Kids programming. At launch the PBS Kids preschool toy line will include 20+ individual wooden toys for hands on learning in different categories: PBS Kids Sounds of the World Rhythm Set; PBS Kids Puzzle Playset Safari; building and construction toys; PBS Kids 3-Layer Puzzles.
More casting news for Lionsgate‘s feature film adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ young adult novel The Hunger Games, as musician/actor Lenny Kravitz (Precious) signs on for the role of Cinna, Katniss’ assigned fashion stylist for The 74th Annual Hunger Games, and Toby Jones (he was the voice of Dobby in the Harry Potter movies, and been in many other movies) will serve as Claudius Templesmith, the arena announcer. Directed by Gary Ross, and produced by Nina Jacobson’s Color Force in tandem with producer Jon Kilik, The Hunger Games is set for release March 23, 2012.
Summit Entertainment taps Matt Reeves (Let Me In, Cloverfield) to direct and Jacob Estes (wrote/directed Mean Creek, The Details) to pen the screenplay for the movie This Dark Endeavor, which is based on This Dark Endeavor: The Apprenticeship of Victor Frankenstein, the first book in Kenneth Oppel’s young adult book series that Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing will release this summer, per Coming Soon. Karen Rosenfelt is producing the movie.
Nickelodeon picks up a third season of its live-action comedy series Big Time Rush. Created/executive produced by Scott Fellows and produced in partnership with Sony Music, production on 20×30 new episodes is slated to being in January 2012. Nickelodeon will premiere the music video for Big Time Rush’s new single, Worldwide, off the group’s debut album BTR (Columbia Records), on Saturday, June 18. The group is set to head out on a summer tour, including stops in the US and Europe, and will then head back into the studio to record their second full-length album, which will release later this year. The group performs original songs written/produced under the guidance of Sony Music, and written by noted songwriters and producers, such as Brian Kennedy (Ciara, Rihanna, Jennifer Hudson), Jay Sean (Sean Paul, Taio Cruz, Lil Wayne and Justin Timberlake), Pascal Guyon (Leona Lewis, Anthony Hamilton) and Fraser T. Smith (Ke$ha, Mandy Moore).
Canada’s Arc Productions (f/k/a Starz Animation), the studio animated Gnomeo Juliet and worked provided visual effects for the TV series Camelot, has signed with Paradigm for representation. Paradigm will assist Arc in furthering its animation and visual effects service business and bolster its newest efforts to expand into developing its own intellectual properties and investing in projects by indie producers. Arc Productions is a partnership with majority ownership recently purchased by a Canadian investor group from Starz Liberty Group. Starz LLC, a controlled subsidiary of Liberty Media Corporation remains a shareholder in the new Canadian operations.
BabyTV inks a carriage deal with TELUS Optic TV in Western Canada, where the commercial free baby and toddler-aimed network will be available in English and Mandarin to subscribers of Optik TV’s Family themed pack, and in French as part of Optik’s Famille pack. From Fox International Channels, BabyTV was founded in 2003.
A Father’s Day episode of Disney Junior‘s series Imagination Movers will air Saturday, June 18 at 7:30a on Disney Channel. The episode, Fathers Know Best, will see the Imagination Movers play both themselves and their dads.
Carson-Dellosa Publishing steps into the summer battle against the summer education slide by introducing three free mobile apps for younger kids and the Summer Bridge Online Companion, which supports the Summer Bridge Activities workbooks. The three mobile apps, for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad, are designed for K4+ and support practice in various early learning skills through games: Cosmic Quest helps build basic math skills and sight word recognition; Fun Run builds number sense and word recognition; and Rally Race reinforces basic math facts and sight words. The Summer Bridge Activities Online Companion ( www.summerlearningactivities.com/sba) builds on the publisher’s workbook series Summer Bridge Activities offering activities for grades Pre-K through 8 across reading, writing, math, language arts, science, social studies and geography. Also new are the Summer Bridge Activities Cards, written and created by teachers. Each set of cards provides learning games in puzzles, jokes, facts and brainteasers.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Zodiak Rights completes further UK licensing deals for the Mr Bean brand. New Mr Bean licensee pacts include: Spike Leisurewear (men’s Mr Bean branded T-shirts); Orion Costume (Mr Bean adult costumes); and Ty (a range of Mr Bean Beanies and Beanie key rings). All products are scheduled to launch this year. Tiger Aspect appointed Zodiak Rights the UK licensing agent for Mr Bean in 2009 and as part of their contract, is also responsible for licensing deals in territories where Tiger Aspect does not have international licensing agents. Zodiak Rights currently has an international licensing agent representing the brand in India.
Peter Schriemer, filmmaker, naturalist, and host of Smithsonian HD Channel’s series Critter Quest, presents his educational program, Nature of God, to young readers with two new books Wilderness Discoveries and Ocean Adventures, releasing this September from Zonderkidz. Schriemer’s will simultaneously release the DVDs: Wilderness Discoveries, Volume 1: Sand, Snakes, and Screeching Birds; Wilderness Discoveries, Volume 2: Forest, Frogs, and Feisty Critters; Wilderness Discoveries, Volume 3: Bugs, Bogs, and Spiky Beasts; Oceans Adventures, Volume 1: Whales, Waves, and Ocean Wonders; Ocean Adventures, Volume 2: Fins, Foliage, and Shoreline Fun; Ocean Adventures, Volume 3: Winged Creatures, Waterfalls, and Wild Reptiles.
