Good Morning, it’s Wednesday, May 23, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Following the localization trend, CNN and Internet Broadcasting signed a content sharing agreement that will bring local news to CNN.com and CNN national, political and international content to IB-affiliated local TV station sites. CNN will also acquire a minority stake in Internet Broadcasting, joining Hearst-Argyle Television, Post-Newsweek Stations, McGraw-Hill Broadcasting and Split Rock Partners. IB’s web sites collectively drew 13.9 million unique visitors last month, making it the 6th global news destination according to Nielsen/Net Ratings. IB’s NBC O&O sites will sit this one out, however, as they feed traffic to MSNBC.com, the top rated news site last month.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Fans of the cancelled CBS post-apocalyptic serial Jericho, who launched a series of campaigns to try and save the show, earned a personal letter from CBS Entertainment chief Nina Tassler on the show’s message boards on cbs.com. She writes that she was touched by the response, which included a flood of emails, an online petition and a MySpace page, and says CBS hopes to let the fans know how the show would have ended. If ever there was an opportunity for a digital extension, this is it!
 
MTV Networks Latin America will offer 12 hours of VOD content per month for cable operators through Digital Latin America (DLA).  The programming will come from MTV’s three libraries including MTV, Vh1, and Nickelodeon, targeting pre-school, teens and young adults.  Shows mentioned include Nickelodeon’s Dora the Explorer, MTV’s Pimp my Ride, and more the VOD library’s 1000+ programming hours.  DLA is a digital content and applications provider for Latin America.
 
Al Gore‘s upcoming The Assault on Reason blames television for dulling the senses, corrupting the political process and transforming the “well-informed citizenry” into a “well-amused audience.” On the other hand, he holds up the internet as a “platform for pursuing the truth,” calling for citizens and lawmakers to ensure it remains neutral and accessible to all. Time published an excerpt of the book this week, alongside a cover story that recounts his role in prodding Steve Jobs to go green and delving into “engine room” details of online advertising at Google.
 
Sci Fi Channel will kick off a nationwide search for the newest cast member of Ghost Hunters next month, who will appear in an upcoming episode of the show. Wannabes can submit an audition video on SciFi.com from June 6 utilizing interactive tools such as the Ghost Hunter’s Gear Guide. Three finalists will compete during the annual Ghost Hunters Live telecast on Halloween night. 
 
Tonight after the new American Idol winner is chosen, AOL Music will exclusively premiere the full-length studio recording of the winner’s song at around 10pm ET.  iTunes will start selling the single later in the evening, but AOL will be the only place streaming it for free. To celebrate this year’s winner, AOL Music is featuring an American Idol hub page containing performances, interviews, photos and past Idol winners.
 
If internet searches indicate popularity, Blake Lewis has the edge over Jordin Sparks in tonight’s Idol finale, according to an analysis of searches by Hitwise. But the 17-year old is closing the gap! A week ago Blake had 270% more searches. This week the margin is only 25%.
 
Speaking of analyzing trends, Google unveiled Hot Trends, combining elements of its Zeitgeist and Trends products to give users an idea of what’s hot in cyberspace. With Hot Trends, you can see a snapshot of what’s on the public’s collective mind by viewing the fastest-rising searches from different points of time. No one said the public’s collective mind wasn’t dirty, however. Yesterday Justin Richert was the most searched for term, the porn star who claims to have performed sexual favors for a state trooper in exchange for letting her slide on drug charges. Warhol was right…everyone gets his or her 15 minutes of fame.
 
TVWeek.com has put up clips of all the new shows announced at the upfronts last week. You can choose to view them by network, by night or by clicking on a show from the interactive fall schedule.
 
Deadheads will have a home to turn to on Sirius Satellite Radio this summer. The deadicated channel will feature Grateful Dead music – including live shows from the band’s archives and bootleg performances from fans – as well as on-air appearances from surviving members of the band including Mickey Hart and Bob Weir.
 
Access Hollywood is operating a microsite focusing on the glitz and glamour surrounding the Cannes Film Festival, running through May 28. Videos and photos of star appearances take center stage, but you’ll also find on location blogs from AH talent and staff members, video trailers and a new interactive map of Cannes hot spots powered by Google Maps.
 
CMT and Sugarland launched the Everyday America Video Contest hosted exclusively at CMT.com.  The user-generated contest asks fans to showcase their personal interpretation of “Everyday America,” Sugarland’s new single.  The fan-created music video will premiere on CMT TOP 20 COUNTDOWN later this summer, and Sugarland will feature the winning entry onscreen at their summer concert series.  Submissions will also be featured on CMT Loaded, the network’s broadband channel.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~
 

CBS Corp. acquired the financial video news blog WallStrip for an undisclosed amount rumored to be in the neighborhood of $5 million. Wallstrip will maintain its indie identity and host Lindsay Campbell will continue to anchor the daily vlog, but the sites’ creators will contribute to other CBS Interactive properties. CBS has been without a financial news site since it sold MarketWatch.com to Dow Jones & Co. in 2005 for $528 million.

Joost signed a deal with Creative Artists Agency to get the talent agency’s help in signing up more content partners for ad-supported online TV service. The Luxembourg-based company, led by Skype founders Janus Friis and Niklas Zennstrom, recently added $45 million in equity financing and has already signed deals with Viacom, National Geographic and Warner Bros. Records.
 
Online community for independent filmmakers Liberated Films, announces a new content agreement to add thousands of movie trailers, clips, behind-the-scenes videos and celebrity interviews from over 300 movie studios, including Miramax, Universal, Sony Pictures, Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema.
 
Azureus announced an agreement with Ministry of Sound TV to feature MoSTV’s dance music videos, interviews and behind-the-scenes programming on its video sharing site Vuze
 
An Apple TV user posted a video demonstrating a new plug in that will allow users to watch YouTube videos on their TV using the device. Awkward TV, where the video can be found, says it will feature the plug in its directory soon.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

EMI, the major music label that agreed to sell DRM-free tracks on iTunes, agreed to be purchased by private equity firm Terra Firma Capital Partners. NY-based rival Warner Music had tried to merge with EMI four times since 2000, but talks have faltered each time over price or antitrust concerns.
 
Multicultural on-demand IPTV network SIVOO signed a deal to provide IPTV technology provider Verismo with Spanish, Chinese and Hindi language on-demand entertainment programming every month for its Verismo ViPTV Platform. ViPTV customers can access in-language movies, TV shows, sports, telenovelas, and other content via a set-top box that ports content from the internet directly to the TV without a PC.
 
Post production house Broadway Video Digital Media has partnered with digital translation company En Vivo Live Media to provide language dubbing, subtitling, music and effects, translations, and digital media services.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

GET Interactive launched a new video advertising platform that enables a real-time shopping experience with online or mobile video content. Consumers can browse through still images of the content by clicking on a “GET Stuff Now” button.  Without interrupting the content being viewed, a new browser window displays still images from the content and a product panel including a link to a point of purchase. Paramount Pictures has been testing the platform on its Freedom Writers site.
 
Rotterdam-based Adjustables unveiled its own online video advertising solution, allowing advertisers to embed logos, banners, picture-in-picture or text within the video stream. The ads can be contextualized to target individual users’ interests or preferences.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~
 

Over three-quarters of those who watch video on devices other than TV say they watch on a computer, according to new study by E-Poll. Comparatively, mobile platforms are far less frequently used to watch video content, in part due to the availability of very select content on these other devices. MP3 players, including iPod, are used by one quarter of owners to watch video content on other devices, followed by PDA and cell phones among owners of each of those devices. The introduction of more and differentiated content for alternate viewing environments is critical to consumer adoption of mobile platforms, concludes the study.
