Cynopsis: Sports

05/18/11

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, May 18, 2011, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

It was ESPN day in New York for the upfronts as network talent and executives presented upcoming programming initiatives to advertisers with the event hosted by network personalities Michelle Beadle and Scott Van Pelt.

The biggest change will be a new 3-6p block of shows in the afternoons on ESPN2 beginning Sept. 12. The rejiggered lineup will feature two new studio shows, Numbers Don’t Lie, running at 3:30p, and Dan Le Batard is Highly Questionable set for 4p. Those series will join NASCAR Now, Jim Rome is Burning in the lineup with SportsNation which gets pushed to 5p.

Dan Le Batard is Highly Questionable will feature sportswriter and Miami radio personality Dan Le Batard who will bring “an innovative and comedic approach to sports commentary and will offer a critical  and sometimes controversial  perspective on the world of professional sports,” according to the network. Numbers Don’t Lie is described as a combination of “news stories  both serious and light  and fantasy sports to debate a variety of topics and make predictions.”

ESPN will also bring a new look for its telecasts of the final ten races of the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup, with the debut of NASCAR NonStop. The channel will now feature a split-screen format during commercial breaks, so viewers will be able to view the action without interruption. During the breaks, the advertisement will appear on the left side of the screen, while the race will continue on the right, with the channel’s scoring ticker showing running positions, running at the top of the screen. The new format will debut on Sept. 28 for the race at Chicagoland Speedway.

Other news from ESPN’s upfronts include:

  • ESPN’s Spanish-language network ESPN Deportes will launch its first original scripted series, dubbed “El Diez,” about a soccer star to heads to Mexico to seek his fame and fortune. The channel will also now broadcast its own version of newsmagazine “E:60.”
  • The launch of a series of short films called HERoics, which focuses on women and their contributions to the sport of soccer. The films will air on ESPN and ABC leading up to and during this summer’s 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup. “SportsCenter” anchor Hannah Storm produced and directed one of the films.
  • After the success of the “30 for 30” shows, the channel will add Tuesday night series, “ESPN Films,” to the schedule in October. Films will include: Catching Hell  The Steve Bartman Story, Renee  Renee Richard’s Story, and a documentary about Johann Olav Koss.
  • “NFL Live” moves to one-hour this Fall
  • Kenny Mayne will unveil a new digital series, “Kenny Mayne’s Wider World of Sports,” in which he travels the world to learn and play new sports

On the Air

The 8th Circuit Court of Appeals has granted the NFL a permanent stay that will keep players locked out, stating that the court believed the league would suffer financial harm if the players were allowed to return to work. The three-judge panel will next hear arguments on June 3 on the legality of the lockout. Players and owners returned to court yesterday for another round of court-ordered mediation (with legal counsel in tow), after meeting for nearly seven hours on Monday which were deemed “productive.” The sides will resume talks on June 7.

ESPN’s X-Games is once again sprouting its wings. Beginning in 2013, the company will expand the annual extreme sports competition around the world, holding two events in the US, and four others overseas. The company will conduct a formal bid process designed to determine the three new X Games host cities, and join the current events that take place in Los Angeles, Aspen and Tignes, France (where ESPN is partnered with Canal+). Cities will be selected in 2012 for a three-year agreement and will work in tandem with ESPN to produce the events. The new stops will create a total of 130 hours of live TV coverage of the six X Games on the ESPN Networks, with more showcased on digital platforms.

The NCAA has ruled that the Fiesta Bowl will get to keep its bowl license on a one-year probationary basis following a scandal that included alleged illegal campaign contributions from bowl staff and over-the-top spending by the former CEO. Last week, the BCS fined the Fiesta Bowl $1 million dollars, but allowed it to remain part of the controversial system that determines major college football’s national champion.

Telemundo will continue its focus on sports in the new season, announcing this week that the channel would be preparing Olympics coverage in addition to the network’s recent acquisition of the away World Cup 2014 qualifying matches for the Mexican National Team. Other sports series on deck for Telemundo in the new season will include: soccer programming Rumbo al Mundial and Futbol Liga Mexicana; the channel’s signature sports magazine show Titulares Telemundo; irreverent sports news series Titulares y Mas; Boxeo Telemundo (I’ll let you guess what that is about); and extreme sports show Ritmo Deportivo.

Back to ESPN again, which has locked in men’s basketball matchups and dates for the Thirteenth Annual Big Ten/ACC Challenge for Nov. 29-30. The event will include 11 teams that played in the 2011 NCAA Tournament with ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU and ESPN3.com combining to televise all 12 games. On Tuesday, Nov 29th, the family of networks will air Miami at Purdue, Northwestern at Georgia Tech, Illinois at Maryland, Michigan at Virginia, Clemson at Iowa and Duke at Ohio St.. Wednesday’s games will feature Indiana at NC State, Penn St. at Boston College, Florida St at Michigan St., Virginia Tech at Minnesota, Wake Forest at Nebraska and Wisconsin at UNC. At stake is the Commissioner’s Cup and a whole lot of smack talk.

GolTV has signed a deal with UEFA to exclusively air the associations Youth, Women and Futsal (a modified form of indoor soccer) competitions in Canada’s and women’s youth national team European championships for the Under-19 and Under-17 levels, the UEFA Women’s Champions League final and the UEFA Futsal Cup. GolTV’s UEFA telecasts will mark the debut of women’s soccer on the network as well as the introduction of futsal the channel’s viewers.

Sponsorship & Promotion

FedEx has extended its sponsorship commitment of its hometown PGA Tour event, the FedEx St. Jude Classic, inking a three year deals that will run through 2014. This year’s event is slated for June 6-12 and has raised nearly $25 million for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital since 1970.

Minor league baseball team the Bowling Green Hot Rods’ have dubbed tonight’s game to be Facebook Fan Night, in which the team’s Facebook fans influence the game’s start time, ticket prices, food specials as well as which charity will be supported via ticket sales. After announcing the promotion in February, the winning elements are:

  • Game Time: 6:35 PM (Gates open at 5:30 PM)
  • Hot Rods Jersey Color: Red
  • Food Special: $1 Nachos
  • Merchandise Special: 20% off Adult Apparel
  • Theme: ’80’s Night featuring music and video clips from the awesome ’80’s
  • Field Pattern: Classic Angels Pattern
  • On-Field Experience: Hot Rods Facebook fan David Matthews won 4 tickets and will participate in Wendy’s Build-a-Burger Challenge
  • Charity: Bellewood Presbyterian Home for Children

Digital Fields

While broadcasters are enjoying the ratings fruits of the NBA Playoffs, digital platforms are setting their own records. NBA Digital is reporting that the company is on a record-setting pace across its online and mobile platforms, scoring 1.2 billion page views and showing a triple digital increase in video streams. NBA Mobile downloads are up 83% for NBA GameTime compared to 2010 numbers.

For the second-straight time, every fight on the UFC PPV card will be made available for live viewing with UFC officials confirming Tuesday that the three UFC 130 fights not already slated for broadcast on PPV or Spike TV will instead be streamed on Facebook. The online contests will feature Bart Palaszewski vs. Gleison Tibau, Chris Cariaso vs. Michael McDonald and Renan Barao vs. Cole Escovedo. UFC 130 takes place on May 28 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

One last ESPN note, ESPN Deportes and Time Warner Cable will be launching ESPNDeportesLosAngeles.com, the first Spanish-language site fully dedicated to covering sports for the local fan in Los Angeles. The co-branded site will feature exclusive, local-relevant and original content created by ESPN Deportes with contributors based in Los Angeles, Mexico, New York, and Miami.

Tonight’s Main Event

Game two of the Miami Heat and Chicago Bulls airs tonight on TNT, with the Bulls up 1-0 in the series. Gametime is 8:30p.

Emails to the Editor in response to:

In My Opinion:

First of all, I’m much obliged and grateful for all the kind words and show of support with the launch of Cynopsis Sports. There seems to be in infinite amount of material to cover and I’m thrilled with this opportunity.
What may be the biggest issue from this past week is one that is both baffling yet unsurprising. Last year, the Fiesta Bowl netted $15 million as a part of the BCS system, which included $2.9 million alone from Big East champion UConn for unsold tickets for their game against Oklahoma. That’s a lot of money from Connecticut taxpayers. So after the BCS came down with a $1 million fine, to be paid to Arizona’s youth, for potentially illegal reimbursements paid to employees for political donations as well as lavish spending by executives, bowl organizers were more than happy to pay the fee. In addition, the Fiesta Bowl was allowed to stay in the BCS.
With the Justice Department now involved in an investigation into the legality of the BCS system, and more states mulling lawsuits, a slap on the wrist wasn’t the right image for an already beleaguered organization, whether you like the BCS or not. What do you think should have been done?

(Agree or disagree?  Email your comments to chris[email protected] for inclusion under Emails to the Editor on Monday)

____________________

I have an issue with any organization that establishes a competition platform that…

a) incorporates exclusion at any level.
b) relies on subjective opinion (ie: strength of schedule) to evaluate potential participants.
c) uses a “cyber” model that is questionable, at best, to “enhance” the selection process.

A championship should simply be based on objective head to head competition between which teams (or individuals) won the most games. If any other evaluation factor needs to be included, it would have to be a second objective criteria such as total points scored. If this means that the coach of Team A chooses to “run up the score” in a game against Team B, in an effort to showcase the teams prowess and establish a stronger position in the final selection process, that’s simply playing to win…nothing more…nothing less.

Votes of coaches, sportswriters, etc…computer analyses and all the other”stuff” simply clouds the issue and turns straight up competition into an ultimate political contest.

Simply stated…”MAY THE BEST TEAM WIN”…period!!!!

I love the new Cynopsis Sports! Keep up the great work.

As for the Fiesta Bowl, I can’t believe that this isn’t going on in some shape or form in the other BCS game cities. John Junker has always been a slimy fellow, and it didn’t surprise me one bit. I live in Phoenix, and the Fiesta Bowl and the BCS National championship mean so much to the valley. Not only with the dollars it brings in for tourism, but it is a game that everyone looks forward to every year. I think keeping it a BCS game was the smart choice. Who doesn’t love coming here in the dead of winter to support their team?!?!

I do think the fine could have been more, but I do think the bowl moved quickly in removing the offenders, and trying to immediately fix the problem.
