Good morning. It’s Wednesday, May 18, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing. 

PBS and WGBH along with other PBS member stations unveil plans to launch PBS LearningMedia, a new public digital media education platform available to all teachers and students nationwide for the 2011-12 school year.  Designed to “help re-imagine” in-class learning, alter teaching, and offer creative ways to engage kids, PBS LearningMedia will feature classroom-ready content tied to curriculum standards, professional development courses, a content delivery system, and a flexible infrastructure that allows for customization and integration into existing services.  Distributed by PBS member stations in every school district, PBS LearningMedia will be available in two tiers, as a free version for every teacher and a premium service developed and distributed in partnership with state education departments or local school districts. Premium service options will include additional features such as bulk registrations, detailed analytics, integration with assessments, and credit-bearing professional development courses that will enhance the free content.  PBS LearningMedia features content from 50+ member stations, independent producers and public institution partners.  The first phase of development for the new education platform will combine existing infrastructure models from the PBS Digital Learning Library with local services from WGBH’s Teachers’ Domain and its partners, WNET/New York and Kentucky Educational Television (KET).

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

This week there was a bidding war for the big screen rights to the upcoming young adult fantasy book Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, by author Ransom Riggs, per Heat Vision.  Set for release on June 7, 2011, the book s represented by APA and Riggs by Heroes and Villains, with CAA repping the publisher.  According to the report, lots of studios showed interest with insiders saying that Fox has made a pre-emptive strike for movie rights.  Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children follows Jacob (16) who, after his own family tragedy, travels to an island off the coast of Wales where he finds the dilapidated Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, which includes abandoned bedrooms, one of which was occupied by Jacob’s grandfather when he was a kid.  As the title implies, the kids at this home were ‘peculiar’ for one reason or another  but why were they kept there and where are they now?

MORE KIDS STUFF

Disney is hosting the Disney Friends for Change Games as part of its multiplatform pro-social initiative Disney’s Friends for Change that encourages kids to help the planet and their communities.  Disney Friends for Change Games, featuring 30+ Disney Channel and Disney XD stars from around the world will competing on four teams in a series of physical challenges, will be showcased on Disney Channel in interstitials airing over five weeks beginning Friday, June 24, during its Friday, Saturday and Sunday primetime original series programming, and Disney XD will air a special episode form the games Monday nights beginning June 27 at 9:30p.  The games will conclude with a half-hour special on Sunday, July 31 on Disney Channel.  Beginning June 10, kids/families worldwide are invited to visit Disney.com/projectgreen (www.disney.com/projectgreen), and Friends for Change international sites to pledge what they will do to help the planet.  Disney will donate upwards of $1 million around the world to various charities as part of the Disney Friends for Change.

Singer/songwriter/producer Ne-Yo makes a guest appearance in a new The Fresh Beat Band special, Band in a Jam, premiering Friday, May 27 at 1p on Nickelodeon.  Ne-Yo, who appears as himself, performs his songs, One in a Million, and the show’s anthem Great Day, with the preschool series’ Fresh Beats.  The network will debut season three (20×30) of The Fresh Beat Band on Friday, June 24, at 10a with two back-to-back episodes.  Two new singles from The Fresh Beat Band, Here We Go written/produced by Matthew Gerrard (Kelly Clarkson, Plain White T’s) and A Friend Like You written/produced by Peter Zizzo (Jennifer Lopez, Jason Mraz), will be available on iTunes this summer.

Cbeebies (UK) is changing up its early evening schedule for summer, which includes reintroducing some familiar characters to help kids settle down for bedtime.  Beginning Monday, May 30, Charlie And Lola will re-join the Cbeebies line-up alongside 64 Zoo Lane.  In The Night Garden and The Bedtime Story will follow those two shows just before bedtime.  The current bedtime series Waybuloo will now run weekdays at 11:15a and 3:10p, and weekends at 1p on Cbeebies.  The shows are all available any time via Cbeebies iPlayer at www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/cbeebies.

Germany’s Your Family Entertainment (YFE) inks further broadcast deals for animated series Oscar the Balloonist, with MTV Oy (Finland), SunTV (India) and Al Jazeera (Doha, Qatar) picking up the series.  Oscar the Balloonist already airs in Germany on KiKa and ZDF.   Last month we reported that FYE signed on as the worldwide distributor for the new animated series The Governator, featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger and produced by A Squared Entertainment.

Nickelodeon‘s new kid-targeted massively multiplayer online game (MMOG) and virtual world Monkey Quest (www.monkeyquest.com) has registered 2 million users and 3.6 million unique visitors in its first month, according to comScore Media Metrix.  Nickelodeon is also adding a new storyline called The Return of the Guardian Knights, which follows the mystery of the Guardian Knights, a lost group of ancient warriors who emerge from the Forgotten Temple after centuries of imprisonment.  In addition, there will be community events where players can receive free gifts to assist them during their quests.  Rated E for everyone, Monkey Quest offers users/parents a subscription plan (month/$9.95; 3 months/$24.95; year/$79.95) or a pay as you go option via NickCash.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Baby Genius will introduce new characters next month at Licensing International Expo 2011.  The new Baby Genius characters are a group of younger musical buddies designed to introduce kids to the world of music, and they will be the focus of a QSR promotion in 2012 as well as a series of iOS apps (TBA).  Pacific Entertainment, creators of Baby Genius, will be seeking licensing partners for Baby Genius in a wide range of categories to complement these new branding initiatives and its worldwide master toy license deal with Tollytots, a division of Jakks Pacific.  Tollytots will launch a full line of musical and early learning toys at retail in time for back-to-school 2012.

Germany-based production companies Mielke Nowak Media and Studio100 Media partner to produce a stage show production of the preschool series Maya the Bee for Germany.  A new version of Maya the Bee in 3D (78×11) is currently in production by Studio 100 Animation in association with TF1 (France) and ZDF (Germany), with Studio100 Media responsible for international sales and distribution.

Scholastic India, exclusive distributor of Atlantyca Entertainment’s Geronimo Stilton book series, will launch a Geronimo Stilton five-city tour in India this month and next.  Kicking off at a bookstore in Bangalore and making his way to bookstores in Chennai, Kolkata, Delhi and Mumbai, the tour features a Geronimo Stilton costume character with a group of actors that will perform readings of some of the stories. The tour will be supported via radio spots and travel updates on Scholastic website.  The Times of India will run a national tour tie-in contest. 

RATINGS

The Hub‘s “The Friday the 13th” programming stunt on Friday, May 13, 2011.  The network earned its best Friday night primetime performance since its launch earlier this year among K2-11 (126,000) and K6-11 (106,000).  The full The Friday the 13th evening (5-10:30p) included episodes of R.L. Stine’s The Haunting Hour: The Series, The series Family Game Night and a play of the movie Gremlins with week-to-week gains:

  • Four-back-to-back R.L. Stine’s The Haunting Hour: The Series (5-7p) saw week-to-week gains among K2-11 (84,000) up by +740$ and K6-11 (58,000) an increase of +729%.
  • The series Family Game Night (7-8p) was also up over the previous week with K2-11 (97,000) up by +94% and K6-11 (75,000) up +74%.
  • Gremlins (8-10:30p) grew the time period over last week with K2-11 (157,000) up +104% and K6-11 (134,000) an increase of +198%.
