Other ABC Upfront News:

  • Additional new shows – there are several new shows that have been picked up but do not appear on the official fall schedule. According to ABC, they will debut later in the 2007-2008 season. Those include: the comedy Miss/Guided, along with the drama Eli Stone, and the alternative series Oprah’s Big Give.
  • Other renewed shows that do not appear on the schedule include: Lost, Jimmy Kimmel Live, Supernanny and Wife Swap.
  • What’s missing from the schedule? – According to Jim, American Inventor, George Lopez, The Knights of Prosperity, Traveler and What About Brian.
  • Sports note – this is the first season in decades since ABC lost the Monday Night Football franchise, as well as the Super Bowl and the Bowl Championship series.

ABC New Series Descriptions:

  • Big Shots – four successful men in business, find refuge in their friendships to gain support for life’s challenges. From Warner Bros. Television.
  • Cashmere Mafia – four successful New York women in business rely on their friendships to see them through complex personal lives. Produced by Sony Pictures Television.
  • Dirty Sexy Money  an idealistic lawyer takes over his father’s practice after his mysterious death and gets drawn into the world of the firm’s wealthiest and most powerful client  the Darling family. From ABC Studios.
  • Eli Stone – in this drama a San Francisco lawyer thinks he is a modern-day prophet after seeing hallucinations. Produced by ABC Studios.
  • Private Practice – spin-off of Grey’s Anatomy that features the character Addison Forbes Montgomery who moves to Los Angeles and enters a posh private practice with two med school friends. From ABC Studios.
  • Pushing Daisies – this drama centers on Ned, who has the extraordinary ability to make dead things alive again just by touching them, including his deceased girlfriend  the twist is that if he touches her once more she’ll be dead again. Produced by The Jinks/Cohen Company in association with Warner Bros. Television.
  • Women’s Murder Club – based on the novels by James Patterson, four San Francisco professional women – a detective, a district attorney, a medical examiner and a reporter, band together to solve murders. From 20th Century Fox TV.
  • Carpoolers – a comedy about four guys from different backgrounds who enjoy their commuting time together as they bond and discuss their lives, women, and jobs. From ABC Studios.
  • Cavemen – inspired by the Geico commercials, a buddy comedy about three modern cavemen, living in the suburban South, who seek their place in the world. Produced by ABC Studios.
  • Miss/Guided – a guidance counselor is employed by her former high school and upon returning finds her old nemesis  the cheerleader, is the new English teacher who is glad to remind her of her unpopular past. From 20th Century Fox TV and ABC Studios.
  • Sam I Am – an accident leaves Samantha (played by Christina Applegate) a victim of amnesia and she must face that her previous self was not well-liked. Produced by ABC Studios.
  • Oprah’s Big Give – Eight-episode competition show where Oprah will give millions of dollars away to people who will make a good difference in other people’s lives. Produced by Harpo Productions in association with Profiles Television Productions, LLC.


Next Upfront Update – CBS with a scheduled presentation this afternoon at Carnegie Hall.  Among the expected announcements … no pickups for Jericho, Close to Home or The Class, and a renewal goes to Amazing Race.  Previous renewals given to The Unit, Ghost Whisperer, NCIS, Numb3rs, Shark, Rules of Engagement and the three CSI series.  Remember, as soon as we receive the official fall schedules for each network, the 2007-08 Programming Broadcast Schedule on our homepage (www.cynopsis.com ) will be updated and posted for your perusal.

FOX has picked up MADtv for a 13th season. The late-night comic lampoon show airs Saturdays at 11p and is produced by Quincy Jones/David Salzman’s QDe Entertainment.

For the first time, Animal Planet will add animal-themed theatrical movies to its primetime schedule when it begins the weekly Saturday night Animal Planet at the Movies on May 19 from 7-9p. The first movie featured will be Stuart Little with other future titles including Fly Away Home and Winged Migration. Animal Planet will repeat the movie each week on the following Thursday from 8-10p.

here! will premiere a new original scripted series called The Lair about a young journalist who discovers a private gentlemen’s club that is actually a coven of vampires. The six half-hour episodes commence June 1 and will air through August with a new episode showing every other week.

CMT will introduce Born Country, a new docu-reality series that relates real-life stories of ordinary people told by them. The series will begin June 1 at 8p and will feature everything from karaoke moms to red-neck weddings and fanatic Dukes of Hazzard fans. The series is executive produced by Lauren Lazin.

Timeless has reupped First Business the half-hour news strip for this fall in more than 100 markets. Timeless has confirmed First Business “After Hours, a review of current stories and trading briefs, is ready for this fall as well. After Hours is designed to expand a local station’s 10p newscast or it can air on its own. The daily feed for First Business is 10p and After Hours is 1030p. Both can be used to create or extend a late fringe news block for FOX, CW or MNT affiliates.

Both Fox and CW’s Upfront is scheduled for Thursday and news expected there includes the non-renewal of Veronica Mars, and a pickup of another two seasons of 24 for Fox. As always, nothing official until the official announcements are made.  But getting back to speculation … CW looks like it will renew Smallville, The Game, Girlfriends, Supernatural and One Tree Hill; and had previously given its official stamp of renewal to Everybody Hates Chris and America’s Next Top Model. In the not-renewed column next to Veronica Mars is All of Us. New for CW – Aliens in America about an exchange student from Pakistan living in the US; Reaper about a twentysomething bounty hunter for the devil; and Gossip Girl about rich teens living in NYC.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

RHI Entertainment, LLC and Genius Products, LLC have an agreement to co-produce approximately 48 original movies for exclusive U.S. broadcast on ION Media Networks and direct-to-video release. RHI and Genius will create specific genre films – 24 westerns and 24 adventures, with the first four ready to begin filming this year. ION has included this programming as part of its already announced 12 hours of RHI programming each week set to begin June 29.

Casting Call Correction: TVWeekly.com is looking for craft designers in the Los Angeles area with camera experience to host projects on various craft channels. Auditions will be this Thursday in Burbank and each participant must bring a completed scrapbook, papercrafting or jewelry project with directions. Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. has tapped Guhan Selvaretnam as VP/New Products Group. Guhan will head the New Products Group to develop and execute new business ideas, working with all TBS, Inc. divisions. Based in Atlanta, he will report to David Rudolph, SVP/Strategy and New Products.

IFC has elevated Debbie DeMontreux to SVP/Original programming up from VP/Original Programming. Debbie has developed and executive produced several series for the network including Ultimate Film Fanatic, Greg the Bunny, The Minor Accomplishments of Jackie Woodman and The Business in addition to supervising the live coverage of the Independent Spirit Awards show.

Steve Daniloff has made the move to be the VP/GSM at Fox Sports Network Pittsburgh from his former position as Regional Sales Manager at WEWS/Cleveland, owned by Scripps. In his new post, Steve reports to Steve Tello, SVP/GM.

Gary Shoefield has been hired as Director/Programming at 111PIX.com, the media download service from London-based 111 Pictures Ltd. and Envisionext, Inc. In this new position, Gary will find and secure content to build a library for 111PIX.com and its VOD portal Filmon.com.

TitanTV Media has added Mark Effron as SVP for TitanTV.com. Most recently, Mark was VP/News and Daytime programming at MSNBC. Based in New York, Mark will produce live and on-demand content for TitanTV.com and is charged with building a team to interact with viewers and TV station affiliates in real-time.

John McDonald has been advanced to Director/Affiliate Marketing for Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movie Channel, reporting to Anthony White, VP/Marketing. Based in Los Angeles and among his many duties, John will work in tandem with Network Distribution & Service to manage the creation of affiliate sales materials and he will set strategy for integrated marketing programs as well as supervise the networks’ new affiliate web site.

MONDAY – A18-49 Analysis:  ABC squeaked out a win Monday night with 4.6/12 A18-49, according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research. Nipping close behind was CBS at 4.5/12, and then NBC 3.6/10, FOX 3.2/9, UNIV 1.8/5, CW 1.1/3 and TELE 0.4/1. At 8p, ABC shimmied to the finish line with Dancing with the Stars at 4.9/15. Then at 9p, NBC scooted into first with Heroes at 5.2/13, ahead of the series finale of CBS’ The King of Queens at 5.1/12 and ABC’s combo Dancing/Star and The Bachelor at 4.9/12. CBS then took firm control at 10p with the season finale of CSI: Miami at 5.2/14.
