Good morning. It’s Wednesday, May 16, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.
While FCC Chairman Kevin Martin continues to recommend that Congress should explore regulating cable TV – particularly when it comes to violence and the marketing of food to kids and implementing an a-la cart menu, yesterday Kyle McSlarrow, President, NCTA, reached out to Congress to instead review and reform the power of the FCC. McSlarrow suggested that the current FCC administration is entangled in an “elaborate web of rules.”
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
While ABC-Disney held its annual upfront presentation yesterday, the company also announced two non-traditional programming content endeavors that include kids and family programming content.
- Disney-ABC Television Group and Sprint has inked a multi-year pact to provide ABC and Disney kids, entertainment and news programming to Sprint’s mobile phone subscribers via on demand and/or three linear mobile channels. Kids programming currently available on a linear offering Disney Channel content, with full-length episodes expected to launch on-demand soon. All of the kids mobile on-demand and mobile linear content will be available in Sprint’s power Vision Access Pack, which will run folks an extra $15/per month.

Disney Parks and Resorts debuts its new Disney Travel on Demand channel this month on Time Warner Cable and Cablevision, the week of May 21 and May 29 respectively. The interactive service offers TV viewers original programming that will help them plan their vacations. For example on Cablevision viewers will be able to connect with Disney travel representatives by requesting a call back by clicking a button on their TV remote. The programming line-up will of course showcase Disney vacation offerings through original episodic shows and specials (e.g. concerts):
- Making the Magic a would-be entertainer competing to get a job at Disney World
- Disney Fact of Fiction answers questions about the parks that have developed over the years
- Dream Makers hosted by various celebrities, the show follows a guest chosen to take part in a special experience
- Disney Travel Insiders bows this June with host Elisabeth Hasselbeck (The View), who will offer travel tips specifically for vacations.
MORE KIDS STUFF
Animal Planet is going ape for animal movies with the launch of Animal Planet at the Movies. Targeted to families, including the fury/scaly/feathered members of the clan and I’m not talking about your weird uncle, Animal Planet at the Movies debuts with Stuart Little this Saturday, May 19, 7-9p. The movies will repeat the Thursday 8-10p following the initial Saturday night airing. Other movies will include Air Bud, Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey, Fly Away Home and Winged Migration.
Nickelodeon will air the newest installment of the Let’s Just Play Go Healthy Challenge on Sunday, May 27 at 8:30p. In this episode’s Workout Like a Pro segment the NFL’s Steven Jackson (St. Louis Rams/running back) provides body strengthening exercise tips. The Work Out Like a Pro segments are also available on Nick.com and iTunes. The episode also checks in with the Let’s Just Play go Healthy Challengers.

In support of the new Warner Bros. movie Nancy Drew, releasing June 15, 2007, the movie studio and Vibes Media, a mobile marketing company, have launched two interactive mobile programs. Designed to create buzz about and get fans connected to the movie, the programs include Nancy Drew Calls You, a web-based feature that allows customized voice messages to be sent from the movie’s star, Emma Roberts, to a cell or home phone, the other is a text-based effort titled, Nancy Drew Get A Clue Text Game that can be played on cell phones. Both can be accessed via www.nancydrewmovie.com , with the web-based program also available at www.nancydrewcallsyou.com .
Lara Croft is coming to the Wii gaming console, according Eidos Interactive, which says the game title Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Anniversary is in development. The game will use the Wii Remote and Nunchuck controllers to Lara in various new ways … I’m just reporting here. While the Wii release date is TBA, Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Anniversary will be available for PlayStation 2, PC Games for Windows and PSP in North America from June 6, 2007.
This summer Cartoon Network launches Toonami Klik, a street skateboarding competition for tween skaters in two groups, 9-11 and 12-14. Toonami Klik kicks off Saturday, June 9 at the Boys and Girls Club of Miami and will wind up August 1 at the Etnies Skate Park in LA, with each weekly regional event featured on a websiode that will be available at http://www.toonamijetstream.com .
PorchLight Entertainment has teamed with Coinstar Entertainment Services to develop a series of Jay Jay the Jet Plane character-based kid’s rides. PorchLight, which produces the Jay Jay the Jet Plane TV series with Modern Cartoons, will oversee the creative production of the rides, while Coinstar will manufacture the rides. Additionally, Coinstar will manage the operation, placement and maintenance of the rides, and plans to install some 200 Jay Jay kiddie rides at retail locations beginning this summer in North America.
MTV Networks Music Group has entered into an exclusive deal with Gain Ltd to develop new media versions of comic books, graphic novels and kid’s books. The customizable content features music and animation and can be distributed across MTVN Music Group’s multiple media screens, including computers, TV, portable video players, various game devices, and mobile phones).
Linkin Park’s new album, Minutes to Midnight hit stores yesterday, but this evening the band will host a virtual party within Virtual MTV (vMTV). Set to take place from 8p in vMTV’s virtual Club Hyde, based on the Hollywood brick and mortar club of the same name, LInkin Park band members will “meet” and talk with their fans. The band KoRn held a similar event with vMTV in February of this year. To take part, go to http://www.vMTV.com, download the free application, create an avatar and head over to the club.
Crocs has completed a license deal with Marvel Entertainment to produce Crocs footwear and Jibbitz, those little charms/accessories for Crocs, featuring Marvel Comics’ characters including Captain America, The Fantastic Four, The Incredible Hulk, Spider-Man, and The X-Men. The Marvel Jibbitz will hit retail this summer 2007, and the Marvel Crocs will be available later this year.
EXECUTIVE MOVES
Cartoon Network Enterprises appoints Alan Fenwick as VP/Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. The first line of business for Fenwick will be to establish new integrated strategies for Cartoon Network Enterprises’ licensing, home video, marketing, creative and legal and finance departments. Additionally, he will focus on building on existing relationships with licensees, agents and retailers. Fenwick was most recently Director/UK Retail, Warner Bros. Entertainment UK.
