Good morning. It’s Wednesday, May 15, 2013, and this is your first early morning briefing.
Disney Channel has hit a centennial mark. For the week of May 6, 2013, the network celebrated its 100th week as the No. 1 network in Total Day in K6-11 and Tweens. Additionally, weekend airings of Disney/Pixar’s The Incredibles were the week’s top two scripted basic cable TV telecasts.
Nickelodeon continues to thread the needle on its SpongeBob promotional revival. On the heels of launching its SpongeBob animated film contest, the network is teaming with Threadless.com for a design challenge where fans can design their best interpretation of SpongeBob and his Bikini Bottom friends and submit the designs electronically. The contest runs until May 30; submissions will be voted on by Threadless members through June 6. The top winner gets $2,500, a $500 Threadless.com gift certificate, a trip to Universal Studios Hollywood, a limited-edition signed SpongeBob animation cell and vinyl figures, and an invitation to participate in the SpongeBob Art Tribute Show. The SpongeBob pairing marks the second collaboration between Threadless and Nickelodeon. The two first teamed on a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles design challenge, which received a record-breaking number of submissions more than 1,000 designs.
We’re just three weeks away from Cynopsis Kids !magination Awards, June 4 in New York. Join us to honor our industry’s finest. For more information, http://cynopsis.com/events/kids-awards/.
Big congratulations to Elie Dekel, president of Saban Brands, who Cynopsis Kids honors this year with our Luminary Award for Leadership. Dekel will be officially feted at CynKids’ !magination Awards, June 4 in New York. Here he shares some insights with our readers:
What’s the key to keeping a children’s brand relevant?
We continuously look at trends such as the growth in the mobile and digital arena, and work to integrate these new opportunities into our brand strategies. We constantly strive to keep each of our brands fresh and exciting for their loyal followers, as well as the more casual fans. A good example of this is Power Rangers, which has been continuously popular for the past 20 years. A big part of the brand’s staying power is the fact that the show, and the associated merchandise, is completely refreshed every year. This helps us to cater to “super fans” who have been following the property for years, as well to new audiences who are just experiencing the brand for the first time.
How do you determine which brands you want to bring into the Saban fold?
The types of brands that pique our interest tend to have some commonalities: A) The brand needs to have been proven with consumers over an extended period of time, and ideally on an international scale. B) The brand needs to have strong potential for growth through content, marketing and digital strategies. C) The brand needs to be suitable for consumer products licensing and merchandising.
How are you more heavily integrating Saban’s television and online/mobile presence?
Kids are not only watching TV but are now consuming media, communicating and interacting on multiple screens. We subscribe to an omni-channel strategy for our properties. We’re constantly working across all of our entertainment brands to enhance our robust digital strategy, in addition to being on television. We have done this with Power Rangers and Vortexx, and plan to do the same with our upcoming Julius and Digimon Fusion television shows. We’ve also just appointed Jack Sorensen as our new president of The Playforge, who will help to continue the growth of our digital mobile games studio and our capabilities across all of our brands. There will be lots more to come in this area!
If you could be any Power Ranger who would you choose?
So I have a confession to make. A few years ago, when we were about to relaunch the brand with Power Rangers Samurai on Nick, I lived out a long-term dream. Halloween was approaching and I borrowed the original Mighty Morphin costumes for the Red and Pink Rangers. My wife and I answered the door for trick-or-treaters dressed as Rangers! The word got out in our neighborhood, and before we knew it we had loads of kids lined up to get their treats from the Power Rangers. Needless to say, seeing the excitement on those kids faces was a personal thrill. The suit was amazing. Transformational. I didn’t want to take it off. I finally did peel it off, albeit, a few days later (laughter).
What was your favorite show as a child?
I was a big fan of Batman and The Six Million Dollar Man, Star Trek (the original) was way up there also.
Who do you consider to be your mentor and why?
The single biggest influence on my career has been Haim Saban. His work ethic, creativity and drive have been truly inspirational over the many years we have worked together. Even now, more than 20 years since I first came to work for Haim, he continues to teach, motivate and inspire me.
What’s your best advice to this year’s college graduates?
Having three kids in college this year, I feel uniquely qualified to handle this one. I tell my own children that while education is so critical to their career development, equally important is experience in the workplace. As young adults emerge from schooling, it’s critical that they discover and recognize their own talents, skills and passions. That focus will lead to jobs and careers that are fulfilling and rewarding.
A CYNOPSIS MESSAGE FROM LITTLE AIRPLANE
“HOW TO MAKE A GREAT PRESCHOOL SERIES”
August 3, 4, 5
Little Airplane Productions is accepting applications for a unique workshop taught by accomplished preschool TV veterans on each step of creating a high-quality preschool series. Topics include Writing, Pitching, Legal, Design, Music, Directing, Producing, Distribution and more. A panel of noteworthy Children’s TV broadcasters will be on hand to discuss pitching to a network.
PROGRAMMING PICKS
Turner’s LazyTown is on the move for season three. The new season, consisting of 13 half-hour episodes, will bow on Sprout on May 27, then on the NBC Kids block this fall. Season three was also picked up by Turner’s own Cartoonito in select European markets, including in the U.K., and the show has been sold to 100-plus territories in syndication.
Time flies. Cartoon Net’s hit series Regular Show will mark its 100th episode Monday, May 20, at 7:45 p.m. In the lead up, Cartoon is celebrating the milestone by airing a marathon of show creator J.G. Quintel’s 10 favorite Regular Show episodes back-to-back on Monday starting at 5 p.m. In the 100th episode, “Bunch of Full Grown Geese,” a gaggle of territorial geese show up at the park where Mordecai and Rigby work, leaving it up to the pair to call upon some old friends for help.
Disney Junior is taking its hit series Sofia the First daily for the summer as part of its “Pirate and Princess” programming promotion. Beginning Monday, June 10, Sofia will air at 9:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. weekdays, and 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. on weekends. New episodes of Sofia and Jake and the Never Land Pirates will debut on alternate Fridays at 9 a.m. on both Disney Junior and Disney Channel from June 14 to Aug. 23. Among guests on upcoming debuts: Princess Jasmine stops by Sofia; Viola Davis, Megan Mullally and Jerry O’Connell guest on Jake. Authenticated pay TV subscribers can watch the shows one week in advance on WATCHDisneyJunior.com and via the WATCH Disney Junior apps for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch.
Skyywalker fans, rejoice. Lego Star Wars is returning to Cartoon Network via a series of three animated specials, The Yoda Chronicles. The first 30-minute special, “The Phantom Clone,” written by Michael Price (The Simpsons), will premiere Wednesday, May 29, at 8pm; installments three and four will air later this year. The special reportedly will introduce Jek 14, a new original clone character.
MORE KIDS NEWS
Sesame Street is embracing its Hispanic heritage in its upcoming 44th season with its newest resident, a Latino character named Armando. Mando, played by Puerto Rico native and NYU Tisch School grad Ismael Cruz Cordova, is a writer from Puerto Rico who will mingle regularly with his Muppet and human neighbors. The character is not the first bilingual Sesame Streeter, but he will likely be the most salient one. The show already features Muppets Rosita and Ovejita, as well as Luis and Maria.
You’re a social media man, Charlie Brown. Peanuts Worldwide is working with stop-motion animator Khoa Phan to produce 12 Vine videos, each based on a Peanut character and/or theme. Iconic elements include: the kite-eating tree, Schroeder’s music, Linus’ blanket, Lucy’s psychiatry booth, Snoopy’s dog house, Snoopy himself, the Red Baron, Woodstock, baseball games, football games, the Great Pumpkin, and the Little Red-Haired Girl.
No surprise a big chunk of the initial paid YouTube channels are aimed at kids. The first YT class includes channels for the Jim Henson Company, Nat Geo Kids, and Baby First. DHX Media is out of the gate with a YouTube triple play: A preschool channel, a channel for kids ages 5-11 and a retro offering of “classic” family fare like Inspector Gadget and Archie shows. DHX channels are available in English, French and Spanish, and at least one more channel (genre to be revealed shortly) is due out in the next two months, according to DHX executive chairman Michael Hirsh. Hirsh tells CynKids the online distribution process runs at light speed compared to the more cumbersome traditional world of broadcast and cable television. “In one nanosecond we had three channels in 10 countries, multiple languages, and a [potential] audience of 1 billion,” he says.
Roku’s new dedicated PBS Kids channel includes full episodes of Curious George, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, Dinosaur Train and The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That, among other series.

Netflix is now the exclusive U.S. subscription television service for popular Disney Junior series Jake and the Never Land Pirates and Disney XD’s Tron: Uprising. The new multi-year licensing deal between the distributor and the Disney/ABC Television Group also will see series Handy Manny, Special Agent Oso and JoJo’s Circus will available to Netflix members on a nonexclusive basis in the U.S. later this month. Meanwhile… Netflix is bulking up its Disney and Disney/Pixar offerings overseas, adding animated and live-action titles including classics Aristocats and Dumbo, plus Ratatouille, The Chronicles of Narnia, Pirates of the Caribbean and more to its offering in the U.K. and Ireland. Next year the U.K./Ireland service is slated to add Marvel‘s Avengers and the Muppets among other programming.
Disney Junior is making house calls. Its new Doc McStuffins: Time For Your Check Up! The iOS app is based on the series and enables players to join Doc, Hallie, Lambie and the rest of her friends as they care for toys and dolls, and develop some fundamental skills along the way.
Sesame Workshop has launched Sesame Street ebooks in the Google Play store, with an initial 25-plus titles including The Monster at the End of This Book, Elmo Loves You and Elmo’s Potty Time. The first batch of ebooks cover subjects including letters, numbers, counting, colors and cultural appreciation. Prices range from $1.99-$4.99, with select titles available in 13 territories worldwide.
Strange bedfellows? Maybe not. Children’s reading app developer Ruckus Media Group is partnering with Connecticut Public Television to launch a CPTV-branded iOS app that delivers kids programming. The app, slated to launch in June, will include downloadable and trackable videos and ebooks. In an interesting twist, users also can donate to CPTV directly through the app. Ruckus was launched in 2012 by former Simon & Schuster exec Rick Richter.

Penguin on April 18 released the first three books of its 12-book program.
Coolabi signed new licensees in the U.K. and Ireland for its preschool brand Poppy Cat—Northern Leisure Group and Art You Grew Up With–and new licensee Karto in Finland.
INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS
Disney XD is picking up 9 Story Entertainment’s irreverent animated animal romp Almost Naked Animals in the Nordics, Central and Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa. Additionally, ABC Australia, Canal+ Family, and Noga Israel are re-upping the series for a second and third season.
Following a successful first season, Pukeko Pictures’ space-age preschool series The WotWots will return to the U.K.’s Channel 5 Milkshake with season two in 2013, through a deal recently brokered by AG Properties, which serves as a global licensing agent for the brand.
Coolabi has a packed summer schedule of appearances for its preschool brand Poppy Cat. The Nick Jr. U.K. show’s costumed star will headline the youth-centric LolliBop Festival at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Stratford, Aug. 16-18 with a revival of its “Copy Poppy” event encouraging kids and families to get up and copy energetic dance moves.
