Cynopsis: Kids!


Good morning. It’s Wednesday, May 14, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.

CBBC has picked up Steve’s Deadly 60 (20×30), a kid-targeted history series that will be hosted by Steve Backshall, from the BBC’s Natural History Unit (NHU).  Over the course of the series Backshall will travel to six continents in search of 60 unique deadly creatures, that would be everything from scorpions to stingrays to red back spiders and the like.  CBBC says that the Steve’s Deadly 60 will be shot in a way that allows viewers to feel like they are along on the trip with Backshall.  The series is slated to bow in spring 2009, and is Executive Produced by Reem Nouss, Head of News, Factual and Learning for CBBC.

Fable Works, a movie production and animation company, has begun pre-production on an original 3D-animated feature film titled Cereal Heroes!  Slated for theatrical release in 2010, the movie is being produced at Sparx Animation Studios (Igor) in France and Vietnam. Cereal Heroes revolves around cartoon cereal box characters are mistakenly brought to life and through happenstance become heroes with their own super powers, albeit strange ones, that they used to save the world from the forces of evil.  David Meinstein penned the screenplay, and the movie will feature characters designed by Stephen Silver, who also designed characters for animated TV series such as Kim Possible, Danny Phantom and Clerks.  Odyssey Entertainment Ltd. is the international sales agent for the picture.  We can only hope the movie is magically delicious!

Adamo Ruggiero (Marco del Rossi of Degrassi: The Next Generation fame) has been tapped to host The Next Star reality series, which premieres on YTV (Canada) on Friday, July 18 at 6p.  Produced by Tricon Films & Television, the series will search Canada for new young musical talent.


Like lots of us, Disney Channel’s Playhouse Disney is ready for summer and will officially welcome the change in weather with the premiere of Super Duper Summer Saturdays on June 21, the weekly preschool-aimed block will air 9a-11:30a.  The summer block will also include the launch of the original animated short-form series, Can You Teach My Alligator Manners? (9:55a).  The short features a boy named Mikey and his efforts to get the audience to help him get his pet alligator, Al, to behave appropriately.  Super Duper Summer Saturdays also includes Mickey Mouse Clubhouse (9a); Bunnytown (10a); and Little Einsteins (11a).

PBS Kids Sprout will add the 3D CGI animated preschool series Dive Olly Dive! to the second season of its weekend morning block, The Let’s Go Show on Saturday, June 7 at 9a.  From Taffy Entertainment and Mike Young Productions (MYP), the Dive Olly Dive! is an environmentally conscious series that follows the adventures of two young research submarines-in-training.  The series is a co-production of MYP, Flying Bark Productions, KI.KA, ARD, Telegael and CDC.

KidsCo keeps on rolling with its launch in Hong Kong on PCCW Now TV.  This newest debut of the multiplatform channel follows launches in Spain, Romania, Poland, Hungary, Russia, Turkey, the Middle East and sub-Saharan Africa.

Discovery Kids Latin America picks up the animated series Will & Dewitt from Cookie Jar Entertainment


BKN International completes a deal with peed Racer Enterprises Inc to handle all licensing and merchandising across Europe, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and the Middle East for the properties Speed Racer: The Next Generation and Speed Racer Classic


Chorion expands its retail and licensing team with the appointment of David Walton as Sr. Retail Manager/Europe and the upping of Melanie Humberstone-Garley as UK Territory Manager.  Walton, who joins the company from Hasbro UK, will drive retail success for all Chorion brands across the UK and Europe, stressing cross-category activity.  Humberstone-Garley will be responsible for delivery of licensing revenue targets, and managing a team of four.  Most recently she was Chorion’s UK Sr. Licensing Manager

Nickelodeon Australia promotes Kirsty Bloore to the new position of Research Director. Prior to joining the network as Research Consultant in 2000, Bloore was Research Manager, Fairfax Digital (and John Fairfax Holdings).
