Cynopsis: Kids!



Good morning. It’s Wednesday, May 12, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Moonscoop lays out a reorganization plan for its US office to refocus on growing its animation work-for-hire business alongside its ongoing production distribution and consumer products efforts.  Moonscoop is currently producing the Zevo-3 for US brand Skechers and plans to announce several other new work-for-hire projects already in production.  The reorganization follows Executive Chairman Nicolas Atlan’s move to LA from Paris last fall, to head up US operations.  Atlan will continue to work with US-based Co-CEO Mike Young to grow the business, emphasizing new partnerships, while President Liz Young continues to lead all production in the US studio.  Atlan will also head operations for Kabillion, a multi-platform kid-targeted entertainment service that remains a priority for the business.  Stepping down from his day-to-day studio responsibilities is Principal and Co-CEO Bill Schultz.  Shultz will continue to executive produce the company’s current projects, including the hit Cartoon Network series Hero:108, Rob Dyrdek’s Wild Grinders and The DaVincibles. Schultz will be non-exclusive to Moonscoop, but will have a first look deal with the company on new projects where there is an opportunity for the company.  In the licensing and merchandising arena, US-based Cynthia Money, President/Worldwide Consumer Projects and Marketing, will continue to focus on growing the global presence of Moonscoop’s brands in 2010.

Ion Media Networks inks multiple affiliate carriage deals for its digital networks healthy lifestyle-centric Ion Life and kid/family-targeted Qubo.  Both Ion Life and Qubo will be carried on Advanced Communications and Comcast Colorado Springs, and under a separate deal, Blue Ridge Cable will carry Qubo in several markets in the northeast region. Qubo and Ion Life recently launched on Advanced Cable Communications in Coral Springs and Weston, Florida. Qubo is available on Digital Plus Channel 150 and ION Life is on Digital Plus Channel 151.  Comcast Colorado Springs also launched both networks on its systems in Colorado Springs and Pueblo.  Qubo is now available across several markets in the northeast including New York (Milford, Hawley); Harrisburg/Lancaster/Lebanon/York (Newberrytown, Ephrata, Duncannon); Buffalo (Galeton); Wilkes Barre-Scranton (Stroudsburg, Dushore, Tunkhannock, Damascus, Lehighton, Pocono Summit); and Elmira (Liberty, Mansfield). Qubo is on channel 116.


Nickelodeon will host Nickelodeon Mega Music Fest, a live family-targeted music event hosted by actor/comedian John Leguizamo at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) in New York City, the afternoon of May 22, 2010.  The filmed entertainment event will also feature Sherri Shepherd as Stage Manager and Colbie Caillat, Wyclef Jen and The Roots, performing new duets with Dora the Explorer, the cast of Yo Gabba Gabba!, The Fresh Beat Band, The Laurie Berkner Band and others.  Produced by Nickelodeon Productions in association with Bob Bain Productions, The Nickelodeon Mega Music Fest combines live-action performances and original animation, and will air in primetime on the network this summer (date/time TBA).


In other Qubo news, the channel plans to launch twelve kid-targeted/family friendly animated and live action series, which will roll out on the network beginning this summer through fall 2010.  The range of series joining Qubo Channel includes the return of Scholastic’s Magic School Bus series for fall, and the short-form animated series Vitaminix, which encourage healthy eating habits.  Additionally, Qubo will offer the US premiere of The Mysteries of Alfred Hedgehog, and also features series including Willa’s Wild Life, Shelldon, Pearlie, and Mighty Machines, plus new episodes of the returning series Turbo Dogs.  In addition, beginning this fall season, Qubo Channel will launch a weekend animated programming block featuring the newly acquired series He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, She-Ra, Princess of Power, Brave Starr and the animated Ghostbusters. Also making its Qubo debut this fall is the live-action series Animal Exploration with Jarrod Miller.

Family Channel (Canada) premieres the live-action music/dance-filled Canadian original series, Baxter, produced by Shaftesbury Films, on Monday, May 24 at 4p with two back-to-back episodes.  The comedy will take up its regular timeslot on Saturday and Sunday at 10a beginning May 29.  Additionally, to grab a sneak peek at the series, the first episode of Baxter will be available on Family OnDemand beginning May 18 and can be sampled at from May 19.  The series follows Baxter McNab (Evan Williams, Degrassi: The Next Generation) and his friends as they attend the Northern Star School of the Arts.  Commissioned by Family Channel, Baxter stars Evan Williams (Degrassi: The Next Generation) and his friends as they attend the Northern Star School of the Arts.  The series is created by Alex Pugsley and Daphne Ballon (Life with Derek) and is executive produced by Christina Jennings and Scott Garvie (Life with Derek, Bloodletting and Miraculous Cures).

Preschoolers get to celebrate their birthdays with Playhouse Disney, which is inviting preschoolers to call a toll-free number (with the help of an adult) during their birthday month to leave a message telling Mickey Mouse about their big day.  Select messages will be featured online and on-air during a new monthly programming event of birthday-themed Playhouse Disney episodes.  The initiative begins with new birthday themed episodes of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse (9a) and Imagination Movers (10a) on Saturday, May 22 6a-11a on Disney Channel.  Preschoolers, and their adult helpers, can call 1-866-4-my-dc-TV/1-866-469-3288 or log onto to ( ) for more information and instructions.

Talk show host/entertainer/model Tyra Banks enters into a multi-book deal with Delacorte Press.  The goal of the three book series is to underline Banks’ mission to expand the definition of what is considered beautiful.  Modelland, the first title in book series, revolves around a teen girl living in a pretend society who competes for a greatly desired way of life that is sadly out of reach at an academy for Intoxibellas, the most exceptional models known to humankind.  Modelland is slated for release in summer 2011.  Delacorte Press is an imprint of Random House Children’s Books, which is a division of Random House, whose parent company is Bertelsmann AG.


Warner Bros. Consumer Products Germany enters into two new toy deals with Mattel and the Simba Dickie Group to support the animated TV series Batman: The Brave and the Bold.  Batman: The Brave and the Bold is currently running on Cartoon Network and German Kabel1.

  • Mattel’s line of toys include a new Batmobile that can shift into a BatJet, as well as the just released action-set with telepathic Gorilla Grodd and collector editions of Batman figures.  The line is being supported with a marketing campaign that includes TV ads on various kid-targeted channels.
  • The Dickie line of toys includes the Batman RC quadbike that works on and off-road, as well as a Batman RC speedboat and RC hoovercraft, both from Simba, Batman walkie-talkie, a spy watch and special binoculars that includes Batman equipment.

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, the third movie based on the third title in Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight book series, doesn’t open for more than a month from now, on June 30, 2010, but fans will be able to order their tickets beginning this Thursday at Midnight at Fandango and MovieTickets, per THR.  Many big movie theater chains will feature links on their websites to the other two online ticketing services, while box offices at movie theaters won’t be offering advanced tickets until closer to the open date.

TurnOut Ventures, in partnership with developer Typhoon Games Studio, has launched Ben 10 Omniverse: Rise of Heroes, the first multiplayer online game based on Cartoon Network‘s animated series Ben 10, at ( Ben 10 Omniverse: Rise of Heroes is currently available in Australia and Hong Kong (in English) and will roll out in other Asia Pacific markets throughout the year.  Set in the time between Ben 10 and Ben 10: Alien Force the game lets players take on the role of one of the students at Bellwood Elementary School, who find themselves trapped in a strange world and transformed into one of three types of aliens after the Omnitrix overloads  but are they trapped forever?


CBS Consumer Products (CCP) promotes P.J. Pierce to VP/Licensing and Maryann Martin to VP/Operations.  Pierce heads up the soft goods category of the division, where he is responsible for developing strategic branded licensing partnership in apparel, accessories and related categories for CBS’s portfolio of properties (current and classic).  Prior to joining CCP in 2008, Pierce spent seven years at Sweetface Fashion.  Martin toiled for CBS’s licensing arm in various capacities for over the last decade, most recently as Director of Operations.  Additionally, John Punturieri is upped Director/Operations from his previous role as Manager/Operations.  Punturieri manages CCP’s accounting and financial reporting systems, and runs all retail and online store operations.
