Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, May 11, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Kids Can Press, a Canadian publisher of kid books, teams with Open Road Integrated Media, a digital content publisher of ebooks, to launch a line of 25 Franklin the Turtle ebook titles including the 25th anniversary edition of Franklin in the Dark.  The ebook titles will be available from May 17, 2011 from a range of online retailers around the world.

Not a day goes by (well almost) … The Hunger Games movie finds its boy/girl tributes for District 10 in Jeremy Marinas and Dakota Hood.  Additionally, THR reports that Woody Harrelson as Haymitch Abernathy, If my calculations are correct, this leaves just District 2 without its tributes, Cato and Clove who are significant opponents for Katniss and Peeta, and a few other characters, yet to be cast.  Based on Suzanne Collins’ books, the Lionsgate movie is being directed by Gary Ross from a script by Billy Ray (Westworld, State of Play, Flightplan, Hart’s War, among others) that is slated for release on March 23, 2012.

Channel Five (UK) enters into a two-year extension for the series Roobarb and Custard Too, in a deal announced by Bulldog Licensing.  The channel will continue run the series as part of its Milkshake morning programming block.  Bulldog continues to grow the licensing program for the property, which already includes products in a range of categories.  New on the horizon could be Roobarb and Custard Too products in the pet accessories, mugs and gift categories.

Singer/songwriter Lisa Loeb and classic TV icon Adam West (Batman) will lend their voices to characters on a new episode of Disney Junior‘s animated series Jake and the Never Land Pirates.  Loeb will voice Winger, Skully’s new bird friend, and West as a wise old parrot on the episode, Birds of a Feather, which will debut on Saturday, May 21 at 8:30a on Disney Channel.

Australian Children’s Television Foundation completes broadcast deals for the kid/family-targeted live-action drama, My Place, with RTP (Portugal), SVT (Sweden), and NRK (Norway).  The series already airs on ABC TV (Australia), which has ordered a second season (13×24) of the series that will air in the latter half of this year.  Produced by Matchbox Pictures, and based on the Australian picture book by Nadia Wheatley and Donna Rawlins, My Place follows the 120-year history of a single piece of land in Sydney, beginning in 1888, where a grand fig tree grows.  The series is told through the kids that lived there.  Australian Children’s Television Foundation handles international distribution for the series.

Spain’s Imira Entertainment inks deals for a number of series across Latin America.

  • In Brazil, Imira-produced short-form preschool animated series Vitaminix (104×2) and Saari (39×3) are acquired by free TV channel Canal Futura, with TV Cultura, also a free TV channel, taking the first season of the live-action series Wicked Science (26×26).  Jonathan M. Shiff Productions, FFC, Film Victoria, Network Ten and ZDF Enterprises produce the Wicked Science series.
  • Argentina’s Canal 7 picks up the entire series of Wicked Science (52×26), as well as Corneil & Bernie (52×13) from Millimages.
  • In Ecuador, RTV, a free TV broadcaster, takes the Millimages series Bugged (52×7) and Breakthrough Entertainment’s Dino Dan (52×11 and 1×22).

Shout! Factory and Nelvana Enterprises enter into a home entertainment deal to release the animated series adaptation of The Adventures of Tintin on DVD in the US.  Under its multi-year pact, Shout! Factory will be the exclusive home entertainment distributor for DVD to 39 episodes of The Adventures of Tintin.  Based on the popular graphic novels by cartoonist Herge (aka Georges Remi), the animated TV series The Adventures of Tintin, was co-produced by Nelvana and Ellipsanime Productions.  Herge initially introduced The Adventures of Tintin in France as a comic strip in 1920s.

Chapman Entertainment appoints Alicom Licensing as the new licensing agent for its properties Roary the Racing Car and Little Charley Bear in the Nordic regions.

Wildbrain Entertainment enters into a licensing deal with Ty Inc. to develop and distribute Yo Gabba Gabba! merchandise.  Under the deal Ty will release a collection of Yo Gabba Gabba! Beanie Babies in time for holiday 2011.  Based on the TV series, the Yo Gabba Gabba! Ty Beanie Babies collection will feature characters including Brobee (the green one), Foofa (the pink flower bubble), Muno (the red Cyclops), Toodee (the blue cat-dragon) and Plex (the yellow robot).

Zinkia Entertainment, creators of the kid-targeted Pocoyo property, partners with Langer Juice Company for a promotional campaign this August 2011 in the US.  Consumers who purchase ten Langer’s juice bottles during August will have a mail-in opportunity to receive a free Dance, Pocoyo, Dance! DVD.  The DVD is an NCircle Entertainment release.  Langer Juice will ship 1.5 million specially labeled bottles for the promotion, and will also feature Pocoyo on its website and Facebook and Twitter home pages.  The animated Pocoyo series can currently be seen in the US on Nick Jr. (daily), Univision’s Planeta U (Saturday mornings), and on PBS stations (check local listings).

Chorion unveils further plans for its yearlong 40th anniversary celebration of its Mr. Men property, created by Roger Hargreaves, including new products, fashion partners, campaigns in social media and music festivals, a live music touring show in the UK.  In addition to the other previously announced activities, 2011 will see Egmont introduce a special edition Mr. Tickle book, a collector’s edition DVD box set from Delta, and a new plush line from Posh Paws.  This summer an official anniversary day (TBA) will feature events at a major British retailer (also TBA), which will include story readings, singing, products and the like.  In fall 2011, there will be Mr. Men artwork and memorabilia, also including original interpretive oil paintings from artist Paul Oz.  The Mr. Men brand will collaborate with Swarovski Elements on new products, as well as with Nails Inc. on limited edition nail polishes.  Furthermore, expect more fashion partnerships.

4Kids Entertainment International recently completed a promotion with European fast food restaurant Quick for the animated series Dinosaur King.  The promotion offered one of four exclusive series related premiums with its Magic Box kids’ meals across France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Algeria, Reunion Island, Dom-Tom, Spain, Russia, Romania, Tunisia, Morocco, New Caledonia and French Polynesia.

Scholastic names Duriya Aziz as VP/Educational Publishing, International Group.  She will be responsible for building a publishing team to develop and adapt existing product for international markets, specifically focusing on the Southeast Asian region.  She will also assume responsibility for directing the educational publishing operations within Scholastic India.  Aziz, who will be based in Singapore, will report to Shane Armstrong, President/Scholastic International and Growth Markets.  Most recently, Aziz toiled for Singapore’s Marshal Cavendish International, an educational publisher, overseeing Marshal Cavendish Education and Panpac Education imprints for Singapore and international markets.  She is credited with leading the introduction of Singapore curriculum materials in a range of countries, including the US, and heading development and implementation of several K-10 math programs, two of which were successfully introduced to the US.

Dr. Helen Boehm is elected to the USA Toy Library Association‘s (USA TLA) Board of Directors.  The USA TLA promotes safe public play space and toy pending centers in community library nationwide.  Boehm is currently an educational consultant to The Hub and is the founder of FCC Ready.  She previously served in senior executing positions at MTV Networks/Nickelodeon and the Fox Children’s Networks, and is also an author.
