CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

05/11/05

Good morning.  It’s Wednesday, May 11, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Emmis Communications has put its 16-station group on the sale block in an effort to reduce debt.  According to Emmis’ Jeff Smulyan, CEO/Pres and Chairman of the Board, “Our decision to explore strategic alternatives for our television assets comes from our ongoing dedication to lowering our debt and putting us in a better position for growth, but also from the recognition that, in order to reach their full potential, our television stations need to be aligned with a company that is larger and more singularly focused on the challenges of American television.”  The news of the potential sale of the station group came as part of a statement that also announced the Board has approved a buy back of 20.25 million shares of its Class A common stock.  In addition to the TV station group, Emmis also owns 25 radio stations located largely in major markets, and publishes regional and specialty magazines. The radio station group represents 64% of the company’s cash flow.   Emmis is represented by Blackstone Group as financial advisor in its efforts to sell the station group.

* NEW ORDERS / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *

HBO made it official yesterday – it will not renew Carnivale for a third season.

Three new series coming to Independent Film Channel as it expands its domain behind film into scripted series.  All of these are set to debut on August 19 in IFC’s Friday night Film Fanatic Fridays block, per Variety:

  • Hopeless Pictures from producer Bob Balaban is an animated comedy set in an independent film studio
  • The Festival (Philm Pictures) is a parody produced in the style of Christopher Guest, about a documentarian named Cookie who was brought in by IFC to shoot a documentary about the director of the film The Unreasonable Truth of Butterflies.  IFC has ordered six 30m eps.
  • Greg the Bunny (Moxie Pictures), who you last saw as a sitcom on Fox.  This time the show begins its storyline as it has been hired out of cancellation hell to do film parodies for IFC.  The network has ordered 12 shorts – each 5-12 minutes long.

* MORE GOOD STUFF *

Travel Channel will launch a new 60m series called Travel Spies (BBC Prods) on Monday, June 13 at 8p.  The spies are experts in the travel industry who go to a variety of resorts, hotels, cruise ships, etc., to get the real skinny, while avoiding the usual travel agent gimmes by traveling incognito with hidden cameras.

Twentieth‘s syndicated series A Current Affair has landed some additional clearances, bringing the total number of cleared markets to 54, representing 60% of the country.  New clearances include WDRB/ Louisville and WEHT/Evansville, both of which recently premiered the program.  Stations picking up the show for fall 2005 include WTKR/Norfolk, WTNZ/ Knoxville, KVOA/Tucson, KVRR/Fargo, KDLT/Sioux Falls, KQDS/Duluth, KCVU/Chico-Redding and KVIQ/Eureka.

MTV Network’s newest cable net, Logo, set to debut on June 30, has three new shows scheduled to debut this fall and in 4th qtr:

  • Open Bar (Trio Films): A reality series following a man’s simultaneous professional decision to open a Hollywood gay bar and his personal decision to come out to his family and friends.
  • Out & About (DemonAngel Prods):  A travel magazine program that lends a peek at global locations through gay celeb interviews, travel tips and local business information.  The series covers Berlin, Hong Kong, Miami, Mykonos, Paris, Stockholm and Sydney.
  • The Ride (Stone &Co Ent):  A multi-episode documentary that chronicles the 2005 AIDS/Lifecycle 4 as the riders travel nearly 600 miles to support the fight against the diseases.  This year’s event supported the San Francisco AIDS Foundation and the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center.

Elsewhere at the MTV Networks, Nickelodeon will team up with Outkast rapper Andre 3000 to develop films for kids.  Part of the deal is Andre 3000 will star in an upcoming film for Nick Movies called The Hit about a fifth grader looking for a new wife for his dad and learns he happens to live next door to Cupid.  Additionally, the deal calls for an option exercised by MTV Networks to develop various projects.

The current season of The Bachelor on ABC has a slightly different flavor that past seasons – it’s set in NYC, and the Bachelor is not as ‘nice’ as previous bachelors.  In fact there’s been a lot said on various websites about his not being very nice at all.  You’d think that would attract more viewers, though that has not necessarily been the case.  This season will also end differently – Monday’s final rose ceremony will air live beginning at 8p.

Correction:   The premiere date for Mind of Mencia on Comedy Central is actually July 6th not July 7th.

Honestly now, do you care if Corey Clark says he has ‘evidence’ of an affair?  Me either.

* EXECUTIVE MOVES*

John Landgraf has been named the new President/GM of FX Networks, stepping in where former prez Peter Liguori left off when he went on to head up Fox network upon Gail Berman’s exit.  Landgraf has been Pres/Entertainment at FX for the past 16 months.  In his new job he will oversee the business and programming at both FX and Fox Movie Channel.

Grupo Televisa Chairman Emilio Azcarraga Jean and EVP Alfonso De Angoitia have resigned as Univision Communications directors in a move that seems to reflect the growing chasm between Televisa and Univision.  This follows Televisa’s complaint submission this week to the California courts regarding an alleged breach of licensing contract.  The Mexican corporation claims that Univision did not pay the royalties Televisa was rightly due.  Univision Communications’ response filing (8-K) with the SEC stated:

         “On May 9, 2005, Televisa filed a complaint in the United States District Court Central District of California alleging breach by us of our program license agreement with Televisa, including breach for our alleged failure to pay Televisa royalties attributable to revenues from one of Televisa’s programs and the Company’s allegedly unauthorized editing of certain Televisa programs and related copyright infringement claims.
         “In relation to such claims, Televisa seeks monetary relief in an amount not less than $1.5 million for breach and, for anticipated breach, declaratory relief against the Company’s ability to recover amounts of approximately $5 million previously paid in royalties to Televisa, and an injunction against our alteration of Televisa programming without Televisa’s consent.
         “The Company denies any breach or anticipated breach of the program license agreement with Televisa and intends to vigorously defend the lawsuit.”

Katie Boyle has been named Senior Broadcast Producer for CBS News’ The Early Show, announced Michael Bass, Senior Executive Producer, The appointment is effective Monday, May 23.

Comedy Central has upped two in its Promotion Marketing Department:  Eric Blume has been elevated to VP/Studio Relations and Production, and Kelleigh Dulany to VP/Promotion Marketing, both reporting to Mitch Fried, SVP/Promotion Marketing.  Eric will develop and produce promotional programming for upcoming theatrical releases and act as executive in charge of production for Comedy Central’s behind-the-scenes theatrical movie franchise, Reel Comedy, as well as for short-form promotional interstitials.  He will also develop and manage relationships with all movie studios, film producers and talent.  Kelleigh will be responsible for delivering compelling, creative and strategic added-value sponsorship packages for Comedy Central advertisers as well as raising the network’s profile with the entertainment tour industry, increasing her involvement in talent negotiations and related tour opportunities to maximize ancillary revenue opportunities.

Walter A. Ward III, Director of Communications for the Atlanta Braves, died May 8 in Atlanta after a long battle with cancer. He was 42.  Ward led the public relations, photography & broadcasting and print productions departments for Turner Broadcasting’s Major League Baseball franchise. He joined Turner in 1996 and was director of public relations for TNT and TBS, directing press outreach on live TNT concert-event tributes to John Lennon, Johnny Cash, Bob Marley and Brian Wilson; the annual Screen Actors Guild Awards on TNT; and ratings, marketing and branding stories for both networks. He also worked with Turner Sports on NBA, NASCAR and PGA Golf programming airing on the networks.  One of the nicest men in the business, he will truly be missed.

A&E announced the upping of Lori Peterzell to VP/Consumer Advertising, reporting to Artie Scheff, SVP/Marketing, A&E Network – USA.   Lori will oversee the strategic alliances and the A&E Biography Club, in addition to leading the consumer advertising team.

Court TV‘s Rochelle DiRe has been upped to EVP/HR, a newly created position that reflects her contributions to the network, according to Court TV Chairman and CEO Henry Schleiff. Rochelle and her team have been responsible for the creation of numerous innovative programs that provide support, assistance, and opportunities to Court TV employees at all levels.  She is based in the New York offices.

Cable network Current has named Karl Carter as VP/Marketing and Vanguard Ideas.  Karl joins the network a few months before the scheduled launch on August 1.  He will report to Anne Kallin Zehren, President/Sales and Marketing, and will work out of Current’s headquarters in San Francisco.  He will focus on developing the brand personality, marketing the channel, encouraging VC2 (Viewer Contributed Content) participation and helping build new models of collaboration and integration with advertisers.
