Cynopsis: DIGITAL

3/07/07

Good Morning, it’s Wednesday, March 7, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

MySpace will soon allow members to embed clips of Fox TV shows and other Fox-owned videos on their home pages, according to Business Week, opening the door for a huge increase in ad sales due to broader distribution. Fox already streams the latest episodes of many Fox shows in HD on MySpace.com/fox, but enabling embedding would tap into the viral potential of a site that generated 40 billion page views in January, according to comScore networks, more than any other site on the net. The report suggested an announcement could be made as soon as next month.

~MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS~

Sundance Channel’s Green initiative expanded to include a companion web site. Sundancechannel.com/thegreen, set to launch March 26, will have two main components. “Vision” will be a home for content, including films, documentaries and original series. “Voice” will provide a community for users to join environmentally-themed discussions related to film, politics and policy. Blogs, user-generated videos, photo libraries and links to green resources will be interspersed throughout both. Tools such as the “For A Change Machine” will allow users to navigate seamlessly between the two segments. Popular sites such as Second Life and treehugger.com are partners in the site.

FX and Fox Television Studios will offer online sneak previews of the first two episodes of The Riches before it premiers on FX March 12. MSN will stream the pilot exclusively from March 7-9, then Yahoo, AOL and TV.com will have it from March 10-12. Episode two will be available on Yahoo March 13-15 then on MSN and TV.com March 16-19.

CBS SportsLine.com‘s free coverage of NCAA March Madness this year will double bandwidth capacity, offer a larger video player and provide live streaming audio of games from Westwood One radio coverage of the first 56 games. Ad revenue generated from the online games has doubled from last year and is already sold out. The games were a huge event for CBS SportsLine.com last year, generating over 19 million viewers and five million visits. Fans can obtain VIP access to help cut down on waiting times for live streams at cbs.sportline.com/mmod, while supplies last.

~TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

DirecTV and EchoStar formed an alliance with Google, Intel, Yahoo and Skype to back a national licensing plan expected to take in more than $10 billion if the FCC goes forward with reclaiming and auctioning off a huge block of analog TV spectrum. The additional spectrum, to be freed up following the scheduled switch to digital in February of 2009, could be used to offer consumers new interactive and mobile offerings. The alliance doesn’t mean the companies will bid together, according to a report in Multichannel News, only that they will ask the FCC to permit bidders to aggregate enough licenses to cover the U.S.

As an example of new opportunities available to digital broadcasters, Sinclair CEO David Smith claimed revenues of $20 million or more could be had from retransmission payments for content delivered to mobile devices. Speaking at the Bear Stearns Media Conference in Palm Beach, Smith claimed that mobile TV retransmission payments could eventually eclipse current free cash flow levels, as there is demand for its stations’ content worldwide. Sinclair and Samsung demonstrated a cell phone embedded with a TV Tuner at the Consumer Electronics show in January.

A group of prominent media investors including AOL founders Steve Case and Ted Leonsis and former Fox Interactive Media COO Mark Jung invested $5.5 million in online widget syndicator Clearspring Technologies. Widgets, used by programmers to build graphical user interfaces around, are picked up and embedded on news sites, personal blogs or any website that features automatically updated content such as stock quotes or sports scores. Clearspring helps organize, syndicate, track and monetize content created around widgets across a network of sites. Widgetbox is a competitor in the space; it has served over 38 million widgets to date, according to its site. Clearspring launches a preview site on March 15.

Verizon’s FiOS TV announced a deal with SIVOO Inc. to deliver feature-length Spanish, Chinese and Hindi films to the service as a la carte’, on-demand offerings. The films will be viewable to FiOS TV customers for a 24-hour period priced at $3.99 each. Eight Spanish, eight Hindi and three Chinese titles will be refreshed monthly during the span of the three-year deal. SIVOO operates an internet-based on-demand network for delivery of primarily foreign language films and TV series to PCs, televisions and mobile devices.

Tivo and Earthlink reached an agreement to bundle DVR subscriptions with dial up, DSL or digital voice services. Specific pricing and financial terms were not disclosed. Earthlink will begin marketing the bundled services later this year.

BlueHighways TV signed its first linear carriage deal with Bresnan Communications, set to launch March 11. Bresnan was also the first MSO to offer BlueHighways as a VOD service. The channel celebrates roots music, folklore and traditional American culture.

Digital satellite TV joint-venture USDTV shut its doors once again, affecting about 7,200 subscribers in Salt Lake City, Dallas/Fort Worth, Albuquerque and Las Vegas. Launched by a group of broadcasters and rescued from bankruptcy from NexGen Telecom last November, the service was not able to build a critical mass of programming partners or subscribers.

~TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC. ~

TV Networks need to do more to capitalize on the digital investments they have made, according to search engine marketing firm 360i. A study looking at how 35 TV networks used emerging and social media found only 8% are using tagging tools such as Digg, widgets or virtual worlds increasingly popular on the web. Networks must work to integrate digital marketing efforts across multiple platforms to create more value for advertisers, the study suggested.

~EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Nielsen Buzzmetrics hired Greg Thornhill as Vice President of Client Services and practice lead for consumer packaged goods, including a focus on nutrition and food. John Latona was also named Vice President of Client Services and practice lead for consumer electronics. Both consumer packaged goods and electronics are categories affected by viral elements of the web such as blogs, message boards and streaming video.

~WEBSITE OF THE DAY~

Toyota’s Scion division launched a funky multi-layer interactive web site to promote the release of its 2008 xB model, aimed at recapturing the enthusiasm of 20-somethings that made the car a hit to begin with. The site, wanttobesquare.com, features a number of virtual worlds such as “Wasteland” where visitors can score points by playing games and viewing videos, which can later be exchanged for prizes. (2,000 points can be exchanged for a T-shirt, 600,000 for a 42″ plasma TV.)  Scion isn’t buying any TV or print ads to promote the site, but trailers began running in cinemas this week to promote the campaign. The interesting thing is the car itself is nowhere to be found on the site.

A new website will be featured here everyday for you to check out. Some are TV-centric, some creative, some just plain strange. Email me your suggestions at [email protected] and if I include the site you mention, your name, company and city will be credited. Only one mention per calendar week, to make it fair.
