Good morning. It’s Wednesday, March 6, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

When Fox Sports 1, Fox Sports Media Group’s (FSMG) upcoming sports network, launches on Saturday, August 17, it will be accompanied by Fox Sports Go, a new TV Everywhere service that allows viewers to access programming on iOS and Android devices, as well as on the web. FSMG says Fox Sports Go will deliver more than 1,000 live games events and extras across Fox Sports, Fox Sports 1, and Fox Sports’ 22 regional sports networks. Participating providers have not been unveiled yet.


My Damn Channel has launched The Mark Malkoff Challenge on MSN Entertainment’s Comedy and Downtime channels. The comedy series follows comedian Mark Malkoff as he attempts “unusual feats of bravery” on the streets of NYC. New episodes will debut every Tuesday through May. MSN Entertainment will retain an exclusive three-week window on the new episodes, after which they will also be available via the My Damn Channel Comedy Network. The show is produced by Dean Peterson, executive produced by Rob Barnett, and executive produced for MSN by Smita Shukla. The Mark Malkoff Challenge is the first of several My Damn Channel-created comedy series to be produced for MSN Entertainment this year. The next one, Life: A Gamer’s Guide, will premiere on its Comedy and Nerdcore channels.

Soiled Britches, a YouTube comedy channel from New Nation Networks, has premiered a new hidden camera series from Principato-Young Entertainment called That’s a Friend. Created by Damien Dante Wayans, the show will feature YouTube stars such as George Watsky and Ryan Higa, among others, as they test their friends’ loyalties. It will air every Monday on Soiled Britches for the next six weeks.

Comcast is programming a weeklong “watchathon” event at the end of this month, during which it will offer access to its entire TV Everywhere lineup to subscribers for free, said Comcast Cable CEO Neil Smit at the Deutsche Bank 2013 Media, Internet & Telecom Conference in Florida. This means Xfinity customers will be able to watch content from TV Everywhere services like HBO Go without needing to subscribe to those channels as part of their pay-TV package. The content will be accessible via, the Xfinity TV Player apps, and Xfinity On Demand.

Crackle plans to offer a curated “watch-list” of similarly themed films every Thursday, beginning March 7. The initial slate includes: “Class of SNL,” comprised of films featuring SNL stars; “Tourist Trap,” horror films about trips gone wrong; “Godzilla Attacks,” eight films featuring the famous monster; and “The Criminal Code,” which consists of crime films and Crackle’s original series, Chosen.

Anchor Bay Entertainment has signed a new distribution pact with AMC Networks for original programming from AMC, IFC, and Sundance Channel. The output agreement includes future scripted series to be produced in-house by AMC, IFC, and Sundance Channel. The deal covers all US and Canada distribution on DVD and Blu-ray, as well as “certain transactional digital distribution rights.” AMC’s Low Winter Sun and Sundance Channel’s Rectify will be the first two releases under the new deal.

Gay sports publication Outsports had joined Vox Media’s sports-blogging network, SB Nation. In the past, Outsports has broken numerous stories related to gay issues in the sports world, including former NBA player John Amaechi coming out as well as the NFL’s prohibition of the word “gay” on their custom jerseys.


The NAB Show has unveiled the 10 market-ready start-ups it has invited to participate in the Sprockit program.The invitees will get the opportunity to present their products and services to media and entertainment executives attending the NAB Show in Las Vegas from April 6 to 11. Among the video-centric start-ups:

  • FlixMaster: Cloud-based interactive video building platform that can power things like online storytelling, e-commerce, and e-learning.
  • SnappyTV: Cloud video-editing platform that can be used to edit and distribute clips from live TV and web streams to Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and other online video providers.
  • Video discovery service that allows users to curate channels based on personal preferences.
  • Tivli: Aims to bring live streaming content and TV Everywhere services to college students, regardless of which device they’re using and where they are.
  • The Whistle: A sports site for kids; it delivers pro and local sports programming across platforms.

Disney has inked a deal with Nielsen through which ABC, ABC Family, and ESPN are using Nielsen’s Online Campaign Ratings (OCR) product to deliver audience guarantees for online video campaigns. Each network is combining OCR’s audience data with total delivered impression counts from ad servers to calculate viewer demographics, in order to follow the network’s mission to provide advertisers with one buy across all screens, which it calls ABC Unified. ABC Family’s work with Nielsen will focus on online video deals as well. ESPN will use OCR for select clients. In addition, ABC, ABC Family, and ESPN will work with Nielsen to improve OCR as it strives to meet challenges related to inventory forecasting, impression allocation, and cross-platform audience measurement.

Facebook is accepting new applications for its Preferred Marketing Developer (PMD) Program — with a couple of catches. First, the social network will give priority to applicants directly referred to them by existing PMDs as well as Facebook’s own internal teams. Second, all PMD applicants must have “a deep knowledge and understanding across all badged areas” (Pages, Ads, Apps, and Insights).


Tablets grabbed 18% of traffic on Jumptap’s mobile ad network in 2012, up from 7% in 2011, and will grow to 29% of network traffic in 2013, according to Jumptap’s latest MobileSTAT report. Smartphones accounted for 78% of network traffic in 2012, slightly down from 79% in 2011. This drop can be attributed to tablet growth, which will result in smartphone market share dropping even further, to 70%, in 2013. Meanwhile, feature phones are increasingly becoming nonexistent on the Jumptap network, dropping from a 14% market share in 2011 to 4% in 2012. In 2013, Jumptap forecasts feature phone share to fall to 2%.


Kevin Patrick Smith has been promoted to SVP/Comcast Media 360 at Comcast Spotlight, the ad sales division of Comcast. He will oversee the Comcast Media 360 business unit and be responsible for strategically placing Comcast Spotlight’s interactive, digital, and advanced ad capabilities across multiple screens. He will report to Comcast Spotlight Corporate SVP and GM Hank Oster.

Matt Turck is joining FirstMark Capital as Managing Director. It’s the venture firm’s first partner hire since 2008. Turck was previously a Managing Director at Bloomberg Ventures.

Mixpo, a cloud-based video marketing platform, has made several new hires at the Director level. Greg Karlik is joining the company as Director/Sales, helping publishers and brands to monetize their video assets. Michael Aronowitz is the new Director/Sales, Agencies & Advertisers. In addition, Ian Mirmelstein has been named the new Director/Advertisers & Agencies. All are new positions at the company and all will be based in NY.

Global news site MailOnline has appointed Linda Villani as its new West Coast Sales Director and Kelly Davis as its new Midwest Sales Director. Villani will be based in LA and Davis will be based in Chicago. Both will report to Rich Sutton, who was named CRO of MailOnline in December.
