Cynopsis: DIGITAL
03/03/10

Good morning, it’s Wednesday, March 3, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

In a move to help filmmakers reach a wider audience, Tribeca Enterprises is launching a new multiplatform distribution platform as well as an online version of the Tribeca Film Festival to stream entries on the web. The Tribeca Film platform will acquire and release films year-round through multiple platforms including VOD, theatrical, home video and ad supported broadband.  Seven titles will open day-and-date with the 2010 Tribeca Film Festival across Verizon FiOS, Comcast and Cablevision digital homes to kick off the initiative. Meanwhile, the Virtual version of the Tribeca Film Festival will feature both free and paid content including full-length films, shorts, panel discussions, interviews and live coverage of the festival. A limited number of premium $45 pass buyers (available to AMEX cardholders, a longtime sponsor, a week early) will be able to watch a selection of full-length 2010 TFF features online day-and-date of their Festival premiere – beginning on April 23 with world premiere of Edward Burns’ Nice Guy Johnny.

Publically-owned BBC announced plans to cut spending by 25% on its website and other digital operations as part of drastic cost cutting measures. The plan is to also reduce spending on imported programming by 20% or more, shutter services such new wave-themed BBC Radio 6 Music, the Asian Network, BBC Switch and BBC Blast and cut $150 million in overhead in order to invest more in high quality homegrown content. However BBC Director-General Mark Thompson acknowledged that BBC Online and the BBC iPlayer is likely the future of the BBC, pointing to projects such as the Canvas convergence plan as typical of its future.

With cable networks moving quickly toward an authentication-required reality, Viacom has decided to remove Comedy Central programming including Daily Show with Jon Stewart and The Colbert Report off of Hulu, effective next Tuesday night. Clips from the shows will still be available on TheDailyShow.com and ColbertNation.com, and will still be searchable via Hulu.

Jupiter Telcecommunications, the largest MSO in Japan’s fragmented cable industry, announced it will start streaming dramas, sports, news and other services online in a TV Everywhere like initiative, per Variety. J:Com also announced that it will shorten the window for streaming feature films from the current 6 months to 3 months after theatrical release.

Marblemedia, Fresh TV Inc. and Teletoon Canada have teamed to launch a new Flash-based site around season 2 of Stoked. It features casual games, videos, a streaming radio station and other interactive goodies.

Sports Illustrated is greatly increasing its digital video production efforts, planning 15 or more segments of “SI Inside Report” daily, per Ad Age.

Online music and video discovery engine The Filter signed its biggest video licensing deal to date to power recommendations and suggestions for Dailymotion‘s global network of sites that now reach an average of 66 million users. The Filter’s algorithm looks at both metadata and user behavior (how long you watch, whether you saved or shared the video) to help with discovery of new videos – a renewed focus for many of the major content sites this year. Initial testing of the platform has reveled that reactions and consumption habits differ significantly across content genres as well as geographical regions, according to The Filter CEO David Maher Roberts.

Jager Bombs for everyone. Where the Wild Things Are producer Scott Mednick and partner Galen Walker have acquired the feature film rights to the web show My New Haircut, a YouTube hit from Brett Teitjen that riffs on Long Island culture and has inspired countess parodies. The project is being developed by MTS Film with Maria Norman (Public Enemies) co-producing.

Google has secured a patent from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office that will allow the search giant to target ads based on the geographical location of the user, indexing country, region, metro area, city or town, postal zip code, telephone area code. “Geolocation” information encoded in ads may be used to determine ad placement as well as track usage, with applications both online and through GPS-powered mobile devices such as the iPhone and Android-powered phones.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Fighting back against iPhone knockoffs, Apple filed suite against Taiwan’s HTC Corp. claiming that the manufacturer has infringed on 20 of its iPhone patents related to user interface, architecture and hardware. HTC, the first company to sell an Android phone and the maker of Google’s Nexus One device, has been one of the fastest growing handset makers in recent years.

Internet video storage and software hybrid provider Blackwave is unveiling its next generation “Chorus” video delivery platform today, offering enterprise class resilience and Flash-support to CDNs, cable operators, telcos and large scale content publishers. The Acton, MA-based company, whose pitch has been the ability to lower CAPEX and infrastructure costs through the use of fewer servers, has been building a client base in Asia and is now looking to help with the heavy lifting around North America’s TV Everywhere push, according to CEO Bob Rizika. “Because we’ve fine tuned the hardware and optimized it, we’re getting 5-10 times the performance compared to when MSOs build out their own infrastructure,” he said. He added that the Blackwave platform can also track performance of individual titles or dynamically add copies of titles when needed.

Rovi announced that it is pulling out of the next generation GuideWorks interactive program guide venture, leaving Comcast as the sole operator of the initiative. Rovi said that is will continue to distribute and update its i-Guide IPG to its current customers, deployed by Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Charter and Insight, among other MSOs.

Citing data from Omniture, NBC said NBCOlympics.com more than tripled its traffic compared to the 2006 Winter Games, attracting 46 million total unique users, delivering 45 million streams and serving more than 3.5 million hours of video. The network restricted access to the much of the video on the site to paying cable and satellite customers for the first time this year and ended up finishing third to Yahoo and ESPN in terms of traffic through the first two weeks of the game, according to ComScore data.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

A bug in the clock function that knocked Sony‘s PlayStation 3 console off its online network has been repaired, the company announced.

To help save even more trees, Discovery‘s Planet Green initiative launched a TreeHugger app for the iPhone offering access to news, opinions, environmentally friendly product information and videos from TreeHugger.com. The free app enables you to listen to live TreeHugger podcasts and post comments directly to the site.

Just in time for the Oscars, E! is relaunching its iPhone/iPod Touch and Android mobile apps with a bevy of new interactive features. The “E! Talk Box” button allows users to record their own video commentary on celeb news topics then upload them to E!, where the network will choose a few to feature on air and online.

Univision
, which introduced an iPhone app last Oct., launched a video app for the BlackBerry featuring access to short and longer form news, entertainment, soccer, TV shows, sports, horoscopes and special events.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Steve Tschosik has joined OwnerIQ as Midwest Director of Advertising Sales. He is based in the company’s newly opened Chicago office, and comes over from ValueClick where he was a Midwest Senior Account Executive.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

The process of archiving and digitizing broadcast footage is expensive and time consuming. But with broadband penetration now at a critical mass, content companies will be rewarded for their efforts with new products and business models. Denver-based Thought Equity Motion, which was hired by the NCAA to digitize and archive all of its athletic video footage dating back to 1900, is unveiling the NCAA Vault today – an open API-based archive of memorable March Madness basketball footage dating back 10 years that’s completely searchable and sharable. Search Sweet 16 moments by team, year or player (magical shots, blocks, dunks and finishes are already broken out) then post the clip to Facebook, Twitter or third party blogs. One of the great things about it for hoops fans is that you can use the interface to watch segments or entire games – I pulled up the entire classic MSU/UK regional final game from 2005. A comprehensive publishing guide outlines ways to reference the content, providing compelling fodder for sports blogs everywhere. CBS, which operates NCAA.com, will promote the Vault through the March Madness video player. But the real power of the application should come from social networking as fans, former athletes begin tag their presence in the video and share it across services, notes Thought Equity founder Kevin Schaff. The company, a sort of Getty Images for online video, will share in ad revenue generated on the platform and plans to develop similar services for other studio and network clients.
