HBO tapped Oscar-winning actor Dustin Hoffman to headline its new drama pilot Luck, set in the world of horseracing and gambling. Hoffman will play a smart, tough guy who has always been a gambler and after being released from prison, he partners with Gus Economou (Dennis Farina), his longtime chauffeur to set a plan involving the track, while hiring Turo Escalante (John Ortiz) to help. Production is expected to begin this spring in Los Angeles. This project marks Hoffman’s first television series role. Additionally, HBO is moving forward with the fantasy series Game of Thrones, ordering nine episodes plus the pilot for a planned first season debut next spring. On-location filming in Belfast begins this June. The project is based on the novels by George R.R. Martin about the mythical land of Westeros and the upstanding Stark family. Each season will comprise one of Martin’s novels in the series and to date he has four completed books. Comedy Central approved a new 10-episode 30m weekly scripted series titled Workaholics from Avalon Television, Inc. and Gigapix Studios. The project stems from a 5th Year and Mail Order Comedy Webisode about three friends just out of college who live and work together as telemarketers. Jason George, currently seen on ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy this season, landed a role on ABC’s new medical drama pilot Off the Map from Shonda Rhimes, creator of Grey’s Anatomy, cites THR. The plot is about three doctors who leave the US to work at an isolated clinic in the tropics. George will play Dr. Otis Abbot, a dazzling ER doctor at the clinic who likes to chase girls, smoke cigarettes and play dirty jokes ~ RATINGS ~
