Cynopsis: DIGITAL

03/31/10

Good morning, it’s Wednesday, March 31, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

AT&T‘s relationship with Apple may be fine at present but that doesn’t mean they won’t soon see other people. Apple is planning to release a new iPhone model that will run on CDMA wireless networks operated by Verizon, Sprint and as well as carriers in other countries, reports the WSJ. (Current iPhone models only runs on GSM networks.) A subsidiary of Taiwanese netbook maker Asustek has landed the order for the phones and will reportedly begin shipping them early next year, per Reuters. Apple is also planning to release a new version of the iPhone for AT&T this summer (as it has done for the past 3 summers), featuring a faster processor and a thinner profile.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Univision Interactive Media has partnered with Hispanic news publisher impreMedia Digital, LLC to exchange content across online and mobile networks in the U.S. The deal encompasses local and national entertainment and news feeds, as well as original articles from publications such as La Opinion and Hoy New York, refreshed on a daily basis. On the music front, impreMedia will showcase articles, video clips and pictures from Lo Ultimo on their national and local music sites part of the impre.com network.

Oxygen says its live real time interactive social viewing club Oxygen Live has tripled its audience since launching with the Bad Girls Club season premiere in Dec. 2009, attracting 264,000 unique visitors. The network also claims that uniques, video streams and page views to Oxygen.com are up by over 100% vs. Q109.

Casting Call: Fox‘s hit drama Glee is turning to FIM’s MySpace to search for new performers for the show’s second season. Amateurs and pros between the ages of 16 and 26 are encouraged to submit an audition video on MySpace through April 26 singing one of 10 tunes featured on the show and explaining why they want to be on Glee. Season 2 premiers April 13 at 9:28, immediately following Idol.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Online study guide publisher Shmoop (kind of a Cliff Notes for the digital age) is launching a series of online AP Test guides today, just in time for the May college entry exams. Shmoop study guides balance academics with pop culture references, web-savvy humor and trivia to make sure students are paying attention. For example, the study guide on Henry James’ Portrait of a Lady draws parallels to Gossip Girl while a Civics guide shows how a bill gets passed by referencing the current healthcare debate. (No, it’s not O.K. to throw bricks at lawmaker’s windows.) The guides are priced at $12.95/each and are viewable via iPhone, Kindle, Nook, Sony reader or PC/Mac.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

Rich media mobile ad network GreyStripe is launching a Flash ad format in May compatible with the iPad, reports Mediapost. The technology will provide a workaround that adapts ads built on Flash to play on the iPad without modifications, despite the fact the device won’t support native Flash.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

The workaround Google put in place to divert mainland Chinese searches to Google.com.hk temporarily stopped working on Tuesday and the company now thinks the blockage was enacted on purpose by the Chinese government. The company initially attributed the snafu to a technical glitch.

Google
also announced a partnership to integrate Adobe‘s ubiquitous Flash technology into its new Chrome web browser. The news is shot in the arm for the recently embattled technology, as Chrome is being developed as an operating system that will run on netbooks and tablet computers competing with the iPad, which left off Flash in favor of the HTML5 video standard.

San Francisco may have the inside track on landing Comic-Con after the San Diego Convention Center’s contract expires in 2012, according to a statement from organizers Comic-Con International. The group holds a sister event, WonderCon, at the Moscone Center this weekend.

Here’s one way to increase college applications: Seton Hall Univ. in Greensburg, PA is planning to give every enrolled full-time student a 13” MacBook and an iPad to enable them to download all their text books digitally, according to the Tuaw blog. The give way is part of the school’s Technology Advantage Program.

Rovi introduced a new personal media manager technology to enable consumers to more effectively streamline their entertainment data over home networks. Compatible with Windows, Mac and Linux, the app tags organizes music, videos and photo files and can connect consumers to online services provided by content or CE partners.

News delivery solutions provider Bitcentral introduced an update to its “Oasis” news archiving and collaboration software platform. The system, demo-ing at NAB, consolidates archived video assets of individual stations into a virtual group newsroom, enabling local reporters and editors to pull raw or finished video from a centralized archive and reuse it on multiple platforms.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

As more private data is stored online, privacy advocates worry that outdated protections will make it too easy for the government to mine your personal information. (Current privacy laws were written back in 1986, the year IBM unveiled the first laptop.) A coalition of tech companies, academics and civil rights groups including Google, Microsoft, AT&T, AOL, Intel, the ACLU and the Electronic Frontier Foundation unveiled Digital Due Process, a new coalition seeking to modernize the convoluted Electronic Communications Act (ECPA) to provide privacy protections to new and emerging technologies. Under the proposal, the government would need a court order to obtain location privacy protection, bulk data requests and information on who and when you communicate with others via email, text message, MMS, etc. according to a blog post by Richard Salgado, Google’s Senior Counsel, Law Enforcement and Information Security. One way to get involved directly is to sign this ACLU petition.
