CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis
03/29/06
Good Morning. It’s Wednesday, March 29, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.
Fox has ordered up another season of Prison Break, from 20th Century Fox TV. With its return to primetime in April, Prison Break has thus far averaged a 4.4/12 A18-49 rating on Mondays at 8p. I suppose people can only break out of prison so many times, and that’s why next season will focus more on the officials’ hunt for prison escapees. Other recent pickups for next year on Fox include Bones, House, The Simpsons (duh), Family Guy and King of the Hill.
Tonight’s Premieres:
WB: The Bedford Diaries at 9p
Sci Fi: Psychic at Large at 10p
* MORE GOOD STUFF *
Superstation WGN has picked up the NBC off-net series Scrubs in a four-year weekday deal beginning this fall. Distributed by Buena Vista Television, the comedy is expected to air twice daily in late fringe.
The latest news from MyNetworkTV scores them a perfect “10.” Bo Derek has joined the cast of the primetime drama Secret Obsessions, scheduled to premiere on September 5. Secret Obsessions, from Twentieth Television, goes behind the scenes of the fashion industry with Bo playing Maria Zianni, a cutthroat fashion mogul. Turning to its affiliate base for a second, KELO-DT/Sioux Falls is now an affiliate, taking the network’s total station count to 66, representing close to 56% of the U.S.
Raycom Media will sell 12 of its stations to Barrington Broadcasting in a deal valued at $262 million, subject to FCC approval. These stations represent a dozen of the Liberty Media stations Raycom acquired just recently acquired and which Raycom said at the time of purchase it planned to divest, according to Broadcasting & Cable. Those stations in the Liberty group Raycom plans still to sell include KASA/Albuquerque and KWWL/Cedar Rapids. Raycom’s strategy is to focus its station group in southeast and in the midwest. The stations sold to Barrington are: WFXL/Albany, GA, KXRM and KXTU/Colorado Springs, WACH/Columbia, KGBT/Harlingen, KTVO/Kirksville, WLUC/Marquette, WSTM and WSTQ/Syracuse, WNWO/Toledo, WPBN-WTOM/Traverse City
Note to self: The Bedford Diaries. Get back from sushi dinner with family by 9p. Seen the trailers, seen first couple of episodes. Good stuff. Better uncut, but good nonetheless. Worth seeing again.
The Gospel Music Channel has a new carriage agreement with the Comcast Corporation, allowing GMC to pursue deals directly with local Comcast systems. Launches are planned for Comcast systems in Atlanta, Savannah and Nashville. The Gospel Music Channel launched in April 2004, and today is available in 77 markets, and has carriage deals with Cox, Charter, 25 independents and now Comcast.
The CW has added 30 new affiliates, taking its national coverage to approximately 74% of the U.S:

WJWB/Jacksonville
WBVA/Roanoke-Lynchburg

KGWB/Davenport-Rock Island-Moline

UPFRONT: COURT TV
Court TV announced its upfront slate at a lunch meeting yesterday in New York City. The list of new and returning series is extensive, so here’s a non-exhaustive example of what’s to come.
First, the three new series with launch dates:
- L.A. Forensics, premiering Friday at 10:30p, looks inside the Los Angeles Scientific Investigation Division (SID)’s use of science and technology to solve crimes; and
- Video Justice, an original series from John Langley about using the camera in law enforcement, premieres April 12 in the Court TV’s action RED block; and
- Haunting Evidence, premiering June 14 at 10:30p, with psychic profiler Carla Baron, clairvoyant John J. Oliver, and paranormal investigator Patrick Burns visiting “haunted” crime scenes and attempting to provide new insight into cold cases.
New original series:
- Missing Persons Unit looks at intensive missing persons cases chronicling a race against time to save the missing individual’s life;
- On the Run is about U.S. Marshals, FBI, CIA agents and state police looking for very clever fugitives on the run;
- America’s Crime Writers: Murder They Wrote spends an hour with known crime novelists as they examine real-life cases that have affected them.
New action series in the RED block:
- SWAT USA gives viewers an inside look at the high-stakes world of special weapons and tactics teams across the United States featuring the best of law enforcement;
- Beach Patrol: Miami Beach follows the lives of the Miami Beach Ocean Rescue team;
- Inside (wt), a half-hour show, explores the work of the Special Response Teams who take on law enforcement’s most dangerous assignments, and the elite guards who protect the nation’s diplomats.
New scripted series:
- ‘Til Death Do Us Part dramatizes true crime events that occur at weddings and continue long into ill-fated relationships. This project is from acclaimed filmmaker John Waters.
- The Wrong Man shows former NYPD detectives Jerry Palace and Reggie Brit re-opening closed cases when new evidence shows that the wrong person has been arrested; and,
- Al Roker Investigates a look at some of America’s most important social issues, from meth production and abuse and internet predators to bullying and gang violence.
Court TV’s upfront revealed new programming on multiple platforms. Beginning in May, the network will launch Seriously Everywhere, delivering its content via satellite radio, mobile, portable media devices and online. There will be original documentaries and series, as well as short-form programming from the CTV-owned website, The Smoking Gun.
