Good morning. It’s Wednesday, March 28, 2012, and this your first early morning briefing.
Elizabeth Murdoch‘s UK-based Shine Group launches its first kid’s venture that will be headed by Andrew Davenport, creator of In the Night Garden and co-creator of Teletubbies. Davenport will take on the position of CEO of the new currently un-named production company next month, which will focus on creating both traditional and interactive multi-platform content for kids, initially working on projects for the preschool market. The properties created by the new kid-centric production banner will be distributed via group sales and distribution arm Shine International, and commercialized (licensing and merchandising) by Shine 360, the division responsible for the management of non-broadcast rights at Shine Group worldwide. Davenport will be reunited with Frances Adams, Shine 360’s Creative Director – the two previously worked together when Adams was at BBC Worldwide working on the international and commercial development of the Teletubbies and In the Night Garden brands. Davenport joined Ragdoll Productions in 1991, initially as a puppeteer and co-writer on Tots TV, and where he stayed for 19-years helping Ragdoll develop into a noted producer of preschool programming, including Teletubbies and In The Night Garden, among others.
At its LA version of its 2012-13 upfront presentation, Nickelodeon officially announces it has picked up the new multi-camera family comedy Daddy’s Home (working title, 20×30) starring Scott Baio (Happy Days, Charles in Charge) for Nick at Nite. The series revolves around David Hobbs (Baio), an actor who, after ten years of starring as America’s favorite TV dad, becomes a stay-at-home father to honor the deal he made with his soap star wife so that now she can return to the limelight. The series comes from creators/executive producers Tina Albanese and Patrick Labyorteaux (yes, he was Andy on Little House on the Prairie, and later Bud on JAG) and is helmed by executive producers Nat Bernstein and Mitchel Katlin (producers of Doogie Howser, M.D., writers on Ally McBeal and Baby Boom) who will serve as showrunners. Eric Bischoff and Jason Hervey (and yes, he was Wayne on The Wonder Years) are also executive producing through their production company Bischoff Hervey Entertainment (have produced a range of TV series and pilots), along with Baio. The series begins production later this year in LA.
The Jim Henson Company is in development on a new animated kid’s series, Imaginocean (52×11), which is based on the Off-Broadway musical, John Tartaglia‘s ImaginOcean. The musical underwater adventure series will be produced using the Henson Digital Puppetry Studio, a proprietary technology that allows digital characters to be puppeteered in real time. Set underwater, the series is told from the point-of-view of an eccentric, yet charming, young fish named Dorsel, performed by Tartaglia (Johnny and The Sprites, and he was also part of the original cast of Avenue Q), the series features music, comedy and friendship, while underlining a social-emotional curriculum. The Imaginocean TV series will be executive produced by Lisa Henson and Halle Stanford for The Jim Henson Company, with Tartaglia, Jill Shinderman and Michael Shawn Lewis executive producing for Jellyfish Jive Productions. The Jim Henson Company will meet with potential co-production partners at MIP-TV.
