Good morning, it’s Wednesday, March 28, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.
It is anticipated Tribune will accept the offer of Sam Zell to purchase the entire Tribune kit and caboodle for $8 billion. If Tribune does accept the offer, which several reports predict it will do by week’s end, Zell will take the company private.
The debut of Discovery Channel’s Planet Earth last Sunday (8-11p) delivered a 3.6 HH rating and 12 million total viewers over the three hours. Additionally, according to TNS Media Research’s set top box information taken from a major market, the Discovery HD Theater premiere of Planet Earth increased the program’s overall HH rating by 15% and an estimated 500,000 more homes watched all three hours in HD. Plant Earth continues the next four Sunday nights starting at 8p.
Fox had planned on the return of Standoff to the primetime schedule next Friday at 8p, but its return has been delayed until some time in June. House will step in with repeats on Fridays at 8p in the interim. No word yet on the fate of Standoff – Fox isn’t making any noise about it one way or another until the upfront announcements in May.
The action sports lifestyle network, FUEL TV, will return three series this Sunday night as part of its Stacked Sundays programming block:
- Drive at 8p, the series which showcases Mike Vallely’s skateboarding trek around the world. Produced by Build Worldwide.
- M80 – at 830p, the freestyle motocross show produced by Long Gut Productions.
- Props at 9p, BMX series featuring interviews with BMX legends such as Mat Hoffman and road trips. Produced by Props Visual.
And, on May 20 FUEL TV will bring back two series for mid-season launches:
- The Captain & Casey Show – at 8p, six new episodes of this skateboard series with interviews with pros and new footage.
- Drive Thru: Caribbean – at 830p, pro surfers in search of the best waves across the islands of the Caribbean.
The Style Network has renewed the series Instant Beauty Pageant for a second season starting April 6 at 10p. Each one-hour episode follows the two co-hosts Debbie Matenopoulos of E!’s The Daily 10 along with new co-host Cameron Mathison of ABC’s All My Children, as they ambush five women at shopping malls in six cities convincing them to participate in an impromptu beauty pageant. So watch out if you live in Virginia Beach, Houston, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Las Vegas or San Diego!
NBC Sports and the National Hockey League have extended their revenue sharing partnership agreement through the 2007-2008 season. The new agreement includes a “Game of the Week” flexible scheduling component as well as an NBC option for 2008-2009. All of the NBC regular season games will be broadcast on Sundays next season in high definition. Postseason games will air on Saturdays and Sundays and Games 3-7 of the Stanley Cup Final will be broadcast in primetime.
Banks Broadcasting has signed a contract and filed an application with the FCC to sell KSCW/Wichita Falls, The CW affiliate, to Sunflower Broadcasting, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Schurz Communications, Inc. Bank Broadcasting still owns KNIN-TV/Boise, while Schurz Communications, based in South Bend, IN, owns several newspapers, radio, television and cable television stations across the U.S.

Hallmark Channel will introduce a number of original movies throughout the remainder of this year and 2008:
- Love’s Unending Legacy – April 7 at 9p; the fifth movie installment of the “Love Comes Softly” series based on the best-selling novels by Janette Oke.
- A Stranger’s Heart – May 5 at 9p; Samantha Mathis stars in this story about a workaholic who has heart transplant surgery and finds her life is redefined for the better afterwards.
- Pandemic – May 26 at 9p; Tiffani Thiessen, French Stewart and Faye Dunaway star in this quick-paced action three-hour thriller about a killer pandemic disease spreading across Los Angeles.
- Marco Polo – June 2 at 9p; Brian Dennehy and Ian Somerhalder star in this three-hour story of the explorer Marco Polo who discovers the court of Kublai Khan in China.
- You’ve Got a Friend – June 9 at 9p; centers on a 12-year old boy who goes to live with his aunt and uncle in a small town after his parents are killed in an auto accident. In the new town, the boy befriends a former Vietnam vet and loner played by John Schneider who helps him build his soapbox derby racer car.
- Avenging Angel – July 7 at 9p; stars Kevin Sorbo as a young preacher who turns from God after a vicious incident and becomes a bounty hunter. He later returns to his former town to avenge the evil people who have taken control.
- Claire – August 4 at 9p; a murder mystery starring Valerie Bertinelli as Claire, a woman who uses her ESP powers to solve the brutal slayings of her neighbors.
- Murder 101: If Wishes Were Horses – August 11 at 9p; Dick Van Dyke is back in the third version of the Murder 101 movie series. Barry Van Dyke also stars.
- Son of the Dragon – September 1 at 8p; a young thief poses as a prince to steal the royal jewels but falls in love with the Princess Li Wei instead.
- Love’s Unfolding Dream – November 24 at 9p; holiday movie about a young woman who dreams of being a doctor during a time when female doctors were not common.
- A Grandpa for Christmas – December 1 at 9p; holiday movie starring Ernest Borgnine, Jamie Farr, Katherine Helmond, Tracey Nelson and Juliette Golgia about a grandfather who must care for his granddaughter when his estranged daughter becomes ill.
- A Reason to Believe – premieres in December; story about a family facing difficulties who come together to find the magic of Christmas.
- In addition, Hallmark Channel will debut the theatrical film Phantom of the Opera on June 30 from 8-11p.
GSN has ordered up 40 episodes of a new game show Camouflage, a series of word games, clues and hidden answers. Production is set to begin in May with a GSN premiere scheduled for July, per Hollywood Reporter. No news yet on a host. The show is produced by Disney.
It’s official – Variety reports Rob Lowe will become a permanent player on ABC’s Brothers & Sisters when it returns for its second season in the fall. Lowe plays the love interest to Calista Flockhart’s characters.
The History Channel currently has five new weekly series in production for the 2007-2008 season. Premiere dates are TBA.
- Ice Road Truckers – eight episodes reveal how miners in the northern part of the U.S. rely on a small group of “top-drivers” who race against time to drive their heavy rigs filled with raw materials over thin sheets of ice.
- The Universe – 13 episodes look at the total universe through robotic rovers and deep-space telescopes.
- Tougher in Alaska – 13 episodes chronicle how historically and currently Alaskans have adapted to the land and environment.
- Human Weapon – each of the 13 episodes examine a different culture and the unique form of martial arts associated with the region. Hosted by martial artist/professional fighter Jason Chambers and former football player and wrestler Bill Duff.
- Jurassic Fight Club – during the course of 10 episodes, archeologists will uncover the battlefield locations of prehistoric beasts which offer new insights into their species.

Stephen (Steve) Cohen has been made President of Hometeam.com, Inc., the production company behind the nationally syndicated television program HomeTeam. Previously, Steve was a consultant with the program as well as other new media companies in the U.S. and globally.
Catherine Dunleavy has been elevated to EVP/CFO of NBCU Cable, where she was previously SVP/CFO of USA Network and SCI FI Channel since May 2004. She will now supervise financial planning and operations for the cable division and her oversight will encompass the entertainment channels and the network distribution area, in addition to involvement with the company’s strategic business efforts. Catherine will report to Jeff Gaspin, President/NBC Universal Cable and Digital Content.
The Los Angeles office of Blueprint Entertainment has hired Marla Ginsburg as SVP to develop, package and manage programming content for traditional television outlets as well as new media platforms. She will focus on both domestic and international markets and strive to increase the company’s slate of co-production projects. Marla will report jointly to John Morayniss and Noreen Halpern. Ellie Hannibal has also been added as SVP/Creative Affairs primarily to develop and produce one-hour and half-hour series for U.S. cable and broadcast networks. She will report to Noreen Halpern.
Universal Pictures has put the last person in place in its senior tier of production executives by promoting Dylan Clark to EVP/Production. Dylan is currently managing the films The Kingdom, The Golden Age, and Charlie Wilson’s War among other titles. He reports to Donna Langley, President/Production.

MONDAY – A18-49 Analysis: ABC tangoed to the finish line Monday night winning with 4.9/13 A18-49, according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research. ABC’s Dancing with the Stars outshone the competition during 8p with 5.4/15 and again at 9p with 6.3/15. Despite being a repeat, CBS’ CSI: Miami slipped into first at 10p with a 3.7/10, while the finale of What About Brian? on ABC came in second at 3.0/8.
