NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

John Cusack and Sean Hayes are the newest actors to join the voice cast of Exodus Film Group’s CGI animated movie Igor, according to Hollywood Reporter.  Slated for release on October 24, 2008, Igor is directed by Tony Leondis and will be distributed by The Weinstein Company.  The cast, chock full of celebrities voices, includes Steve Buscemi, John Cleese, Jennifer Coolidge, Jay Leno, Jeremy Piven and Molly Shannon among others.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Beginning this spring 2007, episodes of a selection of Cookie Jar Entertainment’s kid’s series will be available via British Telecom’s BT Vision Download Store as part of an expanded digital VOD deal between the two.  Among Cookie Jar’s animated programs that will be downloadable in the UK on the BT service include Arthur, the Adventures of Paddington Bear, Mona the Vampire, and The Wombles.  Download to own episodes will run approximately US$3.00 per half-hour episode.

Little Einsteins, the Disney animated preschool series, will make its Canadian TV debut on Astral Media‘s Family Channel from April 27 at 8:45a, as part of the networks weekday morning Playhouse Disney preschool programming block (8:45-11:50a).  Little Einsteins will air Monday-Friday, with new episodes bowing on Fridays at 845a.  Produced by animation studio Curious Pictures, Little Einsteins was developed by The Baby Einstein Company in association with Playhouse Disney.

Universal Pictures International Entertainment acquired the global DVD rights to the first season of the 3D animated series Bernard (52 eps) from BRB Internacional.  This deal for BRB Internacional is the first time that the Spanish company has entered into such a wide-ranging alliance covering so many countries. Universal has also acquired mobile rights to Bernard in the U.K. The DVD will be launched in several countries this year. In addition to the 52 eps, the two-DVD pack will feature extras such as storyboards, artists’ sketches and animatics.  A second season of Bernard is already in the works.

Vacation is coming to Toon Disney with Spring Break Animal Beach Party!, a week-long movie programming event.  Each day Monday, April 2  Friday, April 6, 2007, Toon Disney will feature back-to-back plays of Disney a movie from 3-5p.  The Spring Break Animal Beach Party! line-up:

The U.K.’s Entertainment Rights and the U.S.’ little kiddie network, Qubo, signed a deal to bring over British kids series Postman Pat.  When it begins airing on American soil this fall, Postman Pat will air on Qubo, NBC, Telemundo and ION Television in English and Spanish.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Gymboree will release its first Gymboree Play & Music DVDs on June 8, 2007.  The two titles, The Very Brave Elephant and His Friends and Let’s Get Movie! Trains, Cars and Planes, are designed to reflect the song and movement developmental programs experienced by preschoolers 2-4 yrs and caregivers take part in at Gymboree Play & Music Centers.  Hosted by kid’s music artist Suzi Shelton, and accompanied by Eli Lucas, a Gymboree instructor, the DVDs also include additional video content that provides caretakers with suggested activities they can do with their kids, as well as a printed sheet of advice for caretakers.  Produced by Rick Fernandes, executive produced by Jane Startz and featuring music by Peter Lurye and Michael Rubin, The DVDs ($16.95 each) will be available at Gymboree Play & Music Centers, Gymboree retail stores and Gymboree.com.

Warner Music Entertainment releases its second Underground Ernie DVD titled Summer Breeze, this week.  The DVD title is comprised of seven episodes from season one of the CG animated preschool-targeted series and seven interactive games, which are themed to dovetail with the content of the episodes on the DVD.  The games underline kid development related skills including literacy, memory, listening, deduction, motor-skills, observation, decision making, creativity, and concentration.  Created by John Deery and Sid Rainey of Joella productions, Underground Ernie debuted on BBC’s CBeebies last June 2006.

In other Underground Ernie news:

  • BBC Magazines is set to publish the first issue of its Underground Ernie Magazine, available April 2007.  Published monthly, the magazine is based on the TV series and will include more Underground Ernie stories also featuring other characters from the series.  Additionally, the BBC Magazine will include various age appropriate activities/games for preschoolers and each issue will come with a toy of some sort that is related to Underground Ernie.
  • Panini, a publisher of magazines/comics/World Cup Stickers, has picked up the license for Underground Ernie and will feature the series in Showtime, its new preschool-targeted educational magazine title, this per C21 Media.


Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and TT Games have inked a deal that will result in the release of LEGO Batman: The Videogame for next generation/current game console platforms and PCs in 2008.  Under the deal Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment will serve as the North America publisher for the game title, including all sales and distribution functions as well.  In the game, player will be able to explore the interactive LEGO version of DC Comic’s Gotham City as its characters Batman and Robin, while fighting and capturing evildoers of course.

Mattel has teamed with REM Eyewear, a designer/marketer of eyewear; to introduce a new line of Barbie branded eyeglass frames for girls 3-10 year old.  The 2007 collection ($100-120) is currently available in the US.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Robert Harper has been named Chairman and CEO, Regency Filmed Entertainment.  He will oversee Regency’s film production unit as well as its TV development and production division, New Regency Productions and Regency Television, respectively.  A twenty-two year veteran of the Fox movie studio veteran, Harper was most recently Vice Chairman, Fox Filmed Entertainment, which includes 20th Century Fox, Fox 2000, Fox Searchlight Pictures, Fox Atomic and 20th Century Fox Animation.  Regency distributes its films through 20th Century Fox and Regency Television is a joint venture between Regency and Fox Television Studios.  Prior to joining Fox, Harper was VP and GM, Kaleidoscope Films from 1979 to 1984.

Alex Hodges has been appointed COO, Nederlander Concerts.  He takes up his new position as of April 15 and will be based at the company’s headquarters in LA.  Hodges will oversee talent and marketing teams while also booking talent in each of Nederlander’s markets throughout the West Coast and other areas.  Additionally, Hodges will further the company’s expansion into new markets via new routing opportunities and multi-city runs.  He will report directly to CEO, Adam Friedman.  This marks Hodges return to the company, where in 1988 he served as VP, Nederlander Concerts.  Over the course of his 30+ year career, Hodges has served as a concert promoter, agent, personal manager and corporate executive.  Recently he was President and CEO, House of Blues Concerts.  Previously Hodges was EVP/Talent and Marketing Universal Concerts and MCA Concerts; SVP/West Coast music and live performance departments of the ICM Agency, as well as serving as manager for Gregg Allman and Stevie Ray Vaughan, and before that as an agent for Otis Redding, Sam and Dave, among other performers.
