UPFRONT UPDATE: HALLMARK CHANNEL

Hallmark Channel unveiled its plans for the new season in New York last night, including a plethora of movies. Among the news from Hallmark:

  • The launch of the Hallmark Movie Channel in HD on April 2 with programming mirroring the movie schedule from the Hallmark Channel. And as they say, if it will play in Peoria, it will play everywhere, the network is planning a kick off bash in Illinois on the 2nd of April. You’re all invited.
  • The Golden Girls will air on the Hallmark Channel as the network made a deal with Disney-ABC Domestic Television to acquire the comedy series.
  • Hallmark Channel has picked up the rights to 99 family-themed movies from Disney-ABC Domestic Television. The titles will air on the Hallmark Channel as well as Hallmark Movie Channel and HD network, and includes a number of classics such as Flubber, Return to Snowy River and Shaggy Dog and more recent titles such as The Princess Diaries and The Santa Clause.

The network will produce and air 30 original movies throughout 2008, including a handful premiering this spring:

  • The Shell Seekers – May 3 at 9p; Vanessa Redgrave and Maximilian Schell lead the cast in this family saga about a daughter who works to bring her family together after suffering a heart attack.
  • Final Approach – May 24 at 9p; Dean Cain, Anthony Michael Hall and Lea Thompson star in this action film about an FBI rescue specialists who tries to help aboard a hijacked airplane.
  • Shark Swarm – May 25 at 9p; John Schneider, Daryl Hannah and Armand Assante star in this film about a shark attack in Half Moon Bay.
  • McBride: Requiem – will premiere in June; John Larroquette as McBride solves the murder of a 25-year old classical violinist.

Hallmark Channel has several other original movies in production and a few highlights include:

  • Dear Prudence – slated to air this August; Jane Seymour stars as Prudence Macintyre an advice columnist and TV personality who becomes involved in a murder mystery while on vacation.
  • Herb’s Murders – scheduled for this August; Bob Newhart will play an LA police detective working with his uptight daughter who is a cop solve a kidnapping/murder mystery.

  • Thanksgiving Reunion – airs next November; Jacqueline Bisset stars in this period piece based on a short story by Louisa May Alcott.

Happy with the momentum building at Hallmark in ratings and overall awareness of the network and its programming, Henry Schleiff, top gun at Hallmark Channel, says “if we stay true to our network with what we are, what we’re doing and how we’re doing it, then the advertisers will come to us.  And they have.”  Over the past calendar year, Hallmark moved up into cable Top Ten status, thanks in part to the channels Sunday night movie, and has increased it carriage to 84 million homes.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Rob Thomas’ third project this season, Good Behavior was picked up by ABC. The 60m dramedy, produced by ABC Studios, is about a family of criminals whose mother decides the family must now go straight, after dad has been caught and thrown in the pen for the next five years.   The project is based on the New Zealand series Outrageous Fortune which is preparing to go into its fourth season.

USA Network has four new projects in the works for 2008-2009:

  • White Color (wt) – about a con man who escapes from prison and after being caught becomes a consultant to catch other criminals. From Fox Television Studios.
  • Royal Pains (wt) – a young doctor becomes a concierge doctor to the rich.
  • Shirleyville – young soldier after returning home from Afghanistan becomes mayor of his town.
  • The Nanny Files – young nanny hired by a police chief starts to solve cases by using her network of other nannies, dog walkers, gardeners and neighbors.

More on USA Network’s plans for the new season tomorrow – the network’s Upfront presentation is scheduled for this evening in NYC.

Working off the UK series Ladette to Lady, MTV, Trump Productions and RDF USA are developing a new 60m, eight-episode series, reports Variety. The as yet untitled show will take 15 young women and teach them self-improvement and girl power confidence skills which will be tested through a series of challenges.

Family Feud will hit primetime as NBC and FremantleMedia North America are involved in a celebrity version based on the 30-year old game show format, writes Variety. So far NBC and Fremantle have not revealed details on the revival and casting has just begun.

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:   The open source movement continues. Yahoo joined Google‘s OpenSocial alliance after sitting on the fence for the first few months of its existence. The two companies also announced plans to form the nonprofit OpenSocial Foundation to advance specification developments and insure programming standards remain in the hands of a neutral party. It is believed Yahoo held back on joining the alliance because it worried Google held too much control over intellectual property created by the group.  Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.
