Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, March 26, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Expanding on its existing safety tools, Google unveiled its new Family Safety Guide yesterday at the new Tips for Online Safety site.  Here in the US, Google worked with Common Sense Media to produce an online video titled, A Common Sense Approach to Internet Safety.  The Tips for Online Safety is designed to provide families with quick links to Google’s various safety tools such as SafeSearch.  Consumers can also download Google’s new Online Family Safety Guide (PDF), which includes Internet Safety pointers for parents, or get a quick tutorial on SafeSearch created by one of its partner organizations, GetNetWise.

Jetix Europe’s channels and its other non-linear video content will be available via France Telecom’s Orange network under a newly completed deal.  Jetix will be available to Orange customers in the UK, Portugal, Romania, Poland and Moldova.  As part of the agreement a tailored loop of Jetix content will be available to Orange users in the UK and a modified package of VOD content for Optimus customers in Portugal.  In Poland, Orange will include both Jetix and Jetix Play channels to appeal to older and younger kids. Other territories are also in discussion and these may be included as part of the deal for rollout in 2008.  Orange currently reports that the new Jetix service will be available to 3.2+ million of its mobile broadband customers.

Dic Entertainment’s subsidiary, Dic Music, LLC, launches a new online production royalty free music business, www.cuetunes.com .  The new Cue Tunes business is designed to provide movie and TV professionals as well as educators and students with the opportunity to purchase affordable production music for a range of uses including station themes, news and commercial music, animation and live action, home video, webisodes, video games, and student projects among others uses.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Jane Startz Productions, Inc. in partnership with Lucky Monkey Pictures, have optioned all media rights to William Durbin’s juvenile novel El Lector (Random House/Wendy Lamb Books).  The movie adaptation of the novel will be shot on location in Argentina.  The deal was negotiated through literary agent Barbara Markowitz.  Jane Startz and Lucky Monkey’s founders Lauren Versel and Maria Teresa Arida will produce the picture, with Emily Lansbury and Kane Lee signed on as co-producers.

MORE KIDS STUFF

World Wrestling Entertainment is set to launch WWE Kids, a new bi-monthly consumer magazine aimed at K6-14, April 15, with May/June issue.  Content in WWE Kids will include fitness, nutrition, geography and esteem building related information, as well as info for kids about their favorite WWE stars.  The effort will also include WWE Kids website, which will be found at www.wwekids.com (there is currently a coming soon place holder there).  The launch of WWE Kids magazine will be supported through a multi-platform campaign, including a 100,000-unit pallet promotion in Wal-Mart stores.

Sinking Ship Entertainment has begun production on season two of Roll Play (52×4), the mixed live-action/puppet preschool series that focuses on imagination and exercise.  Production continues now through May 2008.  The new season will feature 18 new original songs from a range of musical artists as well as a cast of 27 new kids.  A Treehouse Original Production, Roll Play premieres on Treehouse this fall 2008.  The French-language version of the second season bows on Societe Radio-Canada in February 2009.  The short-form series currently airs on Treehouse, Societe Radio-Canada, Al Jazeera and Disney Australia.

Pajama Sam, Freddi Fish and Spy Fox are headed for the Nintendo WiiMajesco Entertainment company is bringing the Humongous video game characters to Wii later this year in the US.  Interactive Game Group, LLC, is producing the Pajama Sam in Don’t Fear the Dark, Freddi Fish in Kelp Seed Mystery and Spy Fox in Dry Cereal games under license from Humongous.  More information will be available at the newly re-launched www.majescoentertainment.com.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Penguin Young Readers Group and kidthing, the web 2.0 learning platform, ink a content distribution deal, under which they will create direct to consumer digital versions of a number of kids books including: The Little Engine That Could by Watty Piper (Grosset & Dunlap); Corduroy by Don Freeman (Viking Children’s Books); The Hat by Jan Brett (G. P. Putnam’s Sons); and Nana Upstairs and Nana Downstairs by Tomie dePaola (G. P. Putnam’s Sons).  In addition to Penguin’s titles, a line of interactive educational activities and games will be created using kidthing’s proprietary technologies.  The first book titles will be available at the kidthing online store from April, with additional titles to follow.

Target Entertainment taps PRO Entertainment as licensing agent to represent its 2D digital cel animated preschool brand Fluffy Gardens (40×7) in Brazil and Argentina.  The deal was brokered by Richard Oren, VP/Licensing, USA, Canada and Latin America.  Fluffy Gardens was created, written & directed by Jason Tammemagi, of Monster Animation & Design. Target Entertainment, which co-financed the production, represents the global licensing and home video rights in addition to the TV program rights.

Kidz Entertainment/EEMC has extended its partnership with MGA Entertainment’s Bratz brand.  Kidz Entertainment/EEMC will represent Bratz in Eastern Europe from July 1, 2008, and will continue to work closely with MGA and its local distributors in building a long-term plan across the new markets.

Hit Entertainment and Subway launch a spring promotion featuring Angelina Ballerina at Subway restaurants in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.  Beginning this week through May 11, Subway will feature Angelina Ballerina will be offered as two of four premiums in its Subway Fresh Fit For Kids meals.  The Subway Kids meal promotions are developed by SFAFT (Subway Franchisee Advertising Fund Trust) and their agency b.little + company. RATINGS

Nick-at-Nite’s weeklong George Lopez marathon (March 17-20, 10p-6a, and March 21 & 22 9p-6a) sent the network to its best week ever, with an average of 2.2 million total viewers in primetime.  In the kid category, Nick-at-Nite K2-11 ratings were up +36% versus the same week a year ago.
