Good morning. It’s Wednesday, March 23, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing. 

Coolabi enters into a US broadcast rights deal with Sprout, the 24/7 preschool channel, for its new animated series Poppy Cat (52×11).  Sprout plans to launch the series in the US later this year.  Co-produced by Coolabi Productions, the production arm of Coolabi, and King Rollo Films, the Poppy Cat TV series is based on characters created by Lara Jones in her Macmillan book series.  Poppy Cat is also set to launch on Nick Jr UK in May.  The series has also been pre-sold to other international territories, including Nick Jr Australia, RTE (Ireland), YLE (Finland), TV2 (Norway), and in Canada to TVO, SCN and Knowledge Network, with further deals to be announced soon.  Sprout is a partnership between NBCUniversal, HIT Entertainment, PBS and Sesame Workshop.

MORE KIDS STUFF

CBBC‘s kid-targeted magazine series Blue Peter will hit another TV first, when, on Tuesday, March 29, at 4:30p on BBC One, it becomes the first UK program to air an entire show in 360 degrees.  Kids will be able to see the 360 degree effect by viewing the episode from the Blue Peter ( www.bbc.co.uk/cbbc/bluepeter) website where they will be able to control what they see, by rotating their view and see how a TV studio works behind the scenes.  The 360 degree episode will be shot by YellowBird with its special unit, which houses six cameras, five that look outwards in the horizontal plane and the sixth that looks upwards.  In addition to watching the show and getting a glimpse at the set, viewers will be able to play a game where they must find particular crew members.  Blue Peter airs Mondays and Tuesdays on BBC One at 4:30p.

Disney Junior premieres a new episode of Imagination Movers staring NBA player Richard “Rip” Hamilton (Detroit Pistons guard) on Friday, March 25 at 1:30p on Disney Channel.  The episode, titled Slam Dunk Solution, features Hamilton shooting hoops and helping Smitty learn to play basketball.

Marvista Entertainment completes a number of broadcast licensing deals around the world for TV series and movies, including kid/tween/family-targeted TV movie titles.

  • RTL (Germany) acquires rights to 16 Wishes, the TV movie co-produced by Marvista Entertainment and Disney Channel, and directed by Peter DeLuise (Stargate SG-1) from a script by Annie DeYoung (StarStruck, Princess Protection Program).
  • Televisa Networks (Mexico) has also picked up the license for 16 Wishes along with Riding Tornado, which is based on the real-life story.  The deal with Televisa is part of the distribution alliance with SNAP TV (Argentina) completed earlier this year.
  • In non-kid/family titles, Mexico’s MVS Multivision has licensed three action thrillers for airing in Mexico, and four romantic comedies for air throughout Latin America (excluding Brazil).  The action thriller titles included under the deal are Kidnapped  48 Hours of Terror, The Terrorist Next Door, and Meteor Storm, while the romantic comedy titles include Running with the Hitman, Girl’s Best Friend, and Lost in Love.

Spellbound Entertainment signs new broadcast and licensing deals in Spain for its animated preschool TV series The Koala Brothers (39×30).  The deals were put together by Imira Entertainment, which serves as Spellbound’s licensing agent for the Spanish market.  Cartoon Network in Spain acquired all 39 episodes of The Koala Brothers, which is also show on TVE.  In the licensing arena: Bizak, an indie toy distributor, signs on as the toy licensee for Spain with a licensing and marketing effort for the series already in the works  with products will debut summer 2011 through 2012; Enri inks a deal for back-to-school bags and backpacks, with products set for release summer 2011 though 2012; Planeta Junior, a unit of Spain-based publishing house Grupo Planeta, picks up the publishing rights for The Koala Brothers novelty, coloring and activity books; and Big Picture Entertainment takes the home entertainment rights for the property in Spain.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Lionsgate and HIT Entertainment will release new preschool titles this spring.

  • Thomas & Friends: The Birthday Express releases on DVD, digital download, and On Demand this May 17, 2011.  The title includes four CG animated episodes of Thomas & Friends.  Bonus content on the DVD includes Thomas’ Birthday Special Game and Roary the Racing Car bonus episode.  Marketing support for the DVD release includes promotion via 95 radio stations as well as on a special Thomas & Friends birthday website where kids can download a customized Thomas birthday card.  Thomas & Friends: The Birthday Express coupons will be distributed and a promotional video clip highlighting this new DVD release will be shown at Day Out With Thomas events nationwide.
  • Angelina Ballerina: Pop Star Girls releases on DVD, digital download and via On Demand June 7, 2011.  The title features five Angelina Ballerina episodes, and bonus content on the DVD includes the Dancing Star Memory Game.  The DVD features audio in English, Spanish and French.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Imax Corporation has promoted Phil Groves to SVP/Worldwide Distribution, Studio-Exhibitor Relations.  In his expanded role, Groves will oversee Imax’s global distribution operation in addition to managing its international relationships.  He will continue to report to Greg Foster, Chairman and President, Imax Filmed Entertainment.  Last year 13 new partners opened Imax theatres.  Imax installed 123 theatre systems worldwide, 91 of which were in new locations.  Additionally, Imax entered into new partnerships, including Chinese film studios.

Insight Research Groups appoints two new directors, and promotes four of its own.

  • Steve Becker and James Streit are named as new Directors.  Becker joins Insight from hall and Partners, where he most recently served as Research Director.  Streit was most recently Director/Strategic Planning, ML Rogers.
  • Sarah Chumsky is promoted to Director/Insight Kids.  Chumsky joined Insight in 2005, and before that was a freelance writer/producer and kids’ media consultant.  She has also served as head writer and technology and education producer at Oxygen and as International Producer at Nickelodeon’s Blue’s Clues.
  • David Dyte is named Director/Quantitative Analytics.  A mathematician, Dyte was Sr. Quantitative Manager, and previously worked in advertising, including nine years with Brand Consulting Group at Young and Rubicam, as well as in sports and media.
  • Sarah McLoughlin is upped to Associate Director.  McLoughlin, who joined Insight in 2004 as Research Associate, focuses in much of her efforts on media and fashion.
  • Supriya Sanyal is also named Director.  A specialist in quantitative research, she joined the company in 2000 and focuses on design and analysis of data-driven surveys, and is known as the company’s pop culture guru.

Shine Group appoints Ozen Kazim as International Licensing Manager.  Kazim will be responsible for creation of strategic brand plans and guidelines, inking new licensing deals across territories, and identifying licensing partners in new categories.  She will report to Lori Heiss, Global Brand Manager.  Most recently, Kazim served as Licensing Manager across Walker Books and Rocket Licensing.  She previously toiled for Target Entertainment for six years.
