Good morning. It’s Wednesday, March 1, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.

The final stats are in from Nielsen Media Research, and among the last three Winter Olympics, Torino gets the bronze.  This year’s games averaged 20.2 million viewers, down from Salt Lake City’s 31.9 million, and down from the previous games in Nagano which averaged 25.1 million.  Among the A18-49 averages, Torino gets another bronze with a 6.1/16, behind Salt Lake City’s 11.1/28 and Nagano’s 8.9/23.

* MORE STUFF *Newest iTunes download:  Starting today around 7am, you can download from iTunes the Cynopsis Daily Video PodcastYes, that’s right … daily video. The free video itself runs the same length as the daily audio podcast, 5-9 minutes, and includes a goodly portion of what’s in the email version with a couple of little extras. Why video?  We’re in the television business! And doesn’t it just make sense that a promo should sometimes be seen rather than always reduced to text?  If you’re wondering, the email version is here to stay, as is the audio podcast – video is option available to you, and another piece of the Cynopsis alternative network.  Take a gander, let me know what you think.

My TV Network is asking for 5-year commitments from its new affiliates, according to Media Week.  Set to debut on September 5, the first two primetime shows will be the English-language telenovelas Desire and Secrets.  Affiliates will not be asked for reverse compensation, tho primetime inventory will be split between stations and the network, with 9 minutes per hour going to the local station, and 5 minutes to My TV Network. The 2-hour Saturday recap will split the inventory evenly, 7/7.

Howard Stern may have left the confines of traditional on-air radio standards and practices, but he’s still making waves. CBS Radio has filed suit against Stern and his agent as well as Sirius Satellite Radio, Inc. for “multiple breaches of contract, misappropriation and unjust enrichment.”  Basically the suit says Stern used his CBS Radio time as a long-form promotion for his upcoming gig at Sirius, and that as a result both Stern and his agent benefited.  In part the suit reads that Stern “misappropriated millions of dollars worth of CBS Radio airtime for his own financial benefit, and fraudulently concealed his interest in hundreds of millions of dollars of Sirius stock while promoting it on the air.”  In response, Stern characterizes the suit as a “personal vendetta” launched by Leslie Moonves, Chairman of CBS. The complaint was filed in the Supreme Court of the State of New York, County of New York. Stay tuned.

Three series returning to the ABC schedule:  Jennifer Garner’s CIA agent Sydney Bristow is back fighting corruption, after having had her own baby. Alias returns to the ABC primetime schedule on April 19 at 9p, with a two-hour show. It will air in its regular time period thereafter on Wednesdays at 8p.  And also making a comeback is Hope & Faith, returning to a new night – Tuesdays at 830p following According to Jim, as of March 21.  And returning on April 19 is Invasion at 10p.  Invasion stepped aside to give the network’s new show Evidence a time slot, but it is confirmed to return in April.

ABC‘s What About Brian? will hold off on its premiere for two weeks. While that may sound like a potentially bad thing, the good news is it will get a sneak preview on Sunday, April 16 following Desperate Housewives, and then fall into its regular Monday 10p time period the next day.

BET’s popular reality series, COLLEGE HILL, returns for a third season – this time shot at Virginia State University — on March 2 at 9p, with a one-hour premiere.

The Travel Channel announced the return of the 17-week World Poker Tour (WPT)’s fourth season on March 8, continuing with the 24-week Professional Poker Tour (PPT), beginning on July 5. Both will air Wednesday nights from 9- 11p.

Paxson Communications Corporation is changing its corporate name to ION MEDIA NETWORKS, INC. In connection with the name change, the company also unveiled a new corporate logo and began doing business under the new name and identity as of yesterday.

ABC News and SmartVideo Technologies, Inc. are making available ABC News Now, the 24-hour news channel of ABC News, on cellular Smartphones to SmartVideo subscribers. SmartVideo subscribers will gain access to ABC News Now’s live breaking coverage, hourly newsbriefs and 26 original programs. ABC News Mobile video content reaches over one million wireless subscribers in the U.S. and in several international markets.

* NEW ORDERS / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *Comedy Central has greenlit production on Freak Show, an animated half-hour narrative about a band of freak show performers who also happen to be second-rate superheroes. The network has ordered seven episodes of the series, produced by Comedy Central and created and EP’d by David Cross and H. Jon Benjamin, which will premiere in late 2006 or early 2007.

New to the development slate for CBS is The Big Bang Theory from producers Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady. The premise is simple:  two genius theoretical physicists who really know nothing about how to live life, until they meet a woman who is bent on showing them.

Casting Notes …

FX‘s drama pilot Dirt has added Courtney Cox in the role of the tabloid editor.

ABC‘s Six Degrees has added Hope Davis to the group of strangers whose lives overlap.

Also from ABC, Help Me Help You has cast Ted Danson to star as the psychologist who runs the group therapy sessions on which this sitcom revolves.

Fox‘s American Crime has cast Victor Garber. This show is about a group of very powerful defense attorneys.

Bonnie Hunt’s untitled pilot for ABC has added Micheal Landes to co-star.  Hunt’s character is a private detective.

The History Channel presents This Day in History:
1954:  The US produces the biggest man-made explosion the world has yet known when it detonates a hydrogen bomb in the Bikini archipelago in the Marshall Islands. Six hundred times more powerful than the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima, the explosion sent up a mushroom cloud 100 miles wide; 265 people were accidentally exposed to radiation fallout.

A CYNOPSIS MESSAGE FROM CYNOPSIS VIDEO PODCAST

Cynopsis Video PodcastOnce you’ve seen it and you’re wondering ….

Yes, that’s me.

Yes, those are my feet, my new office, my coffee mug.

No, I don’t really type that fast.

Yes the video was shot at 3am. You’ll notice it’s dark outside at the beginning and by the end (at approx 5:10am) you’ll begin to see the sunrise.

The voice?  By the wee hours of the morning Trish Pihonak is the voice of Cynopsis; by day she’s the Cynopsis Operations Manager.

Cynopsis Video Podcast is edited and produced very early each morning by Tripp Crosby, Three Media.
