UPFRONT UPDATE: SCI FI Channel

At its upfront presentation last night in NYC, the SCI FI Channel unveiled plans for several projects in development. The scripted projects include:

  • True Believer – two-hour backdoor pilot; dramedy about a 20-something avid comic book reader who hires a has-been superhero to be his partner and together they try to save the world.
  • The Stranded – two-hour pilot; based on the comic book co-created by SCI FI and Virgin Comics. The story is about five ordinary people who realize their life, family and memories are a lie and that they are from another planet.
  • Deputized – two-hour pilot; a dramedy about an average guy who suddenly has special powers and becomes part of the inter-galactic police force.
  • Alice – six-hour miniseries; a new version of the Alice in Wonderland story from the team that created Tin Man.

SCI FI also ordered production for a two-hour pilot called Caprica, the prequel to the network’s Battlestar Galactica series which will begin its fourth and final season on April 4, 2008. Produced by Universal Media Studios, production on Caprica will start this spring.

The following are reality projects in development at SCI FI:

  • Estate Of Panic – from the producers of Fear Factor, the hour-long pilot follows seven strangers as they search for money on a large estate. Along the way the contestants encounter spooky things and six are eventually eliminated with the last one taking all the money. Executive produced by Endemol USA.
  • Brain Trust – a group of geniuses work together to solve everyday problems and are later tested to see if they came up with the right solution. Production is slated to start in Los Angeles yet this month with Idiot Box Productions producing.

The network announced the return of three other reality series:

  • Scare Tactics – Tracy Morgan will host a new version of the hidden camera show that originally debuted on SCI FI in April 2003. Set to premiere later this year, the new edition takes unsuspecting participants and puts them in scary staged situations using movie special effects and makeup. Produced by Hallock & Healey Entertainment.
  • Mind Control with Derren Brown – season two is back this fall with six one-hour episodes featuring mentalist Derren Brown demonstrating his skills. The series is produced by Objective Productions.
  • Ghost Hunters International – as part of its first season, seven new episodes will air this summer.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

FOX ordered a comedy pilot The Inn starring Niecy Nash of Reno 911. Set in a chic New York hotel, The Inn is written by Abraham Higginbotham and will be produced by 20th Century Fox TV, Reveille and Principato-Young.

Exit 19 is a new drama presentation picked up by CBS starring Geena Davis. Written by Jeff Bell, Davis will portray a homicide detective in Manhattan while juggling two kids as a single mom in the suburbs of Long Island. CBS Paramount and ABC Studios will produce.

Harpo Productions made a development agreement with Kirstie Alley for future television projects including a potential daily stripped program.

Alchemy Reality, the non-scripted division of Alchemy Television Group announced four projects in development:

  • You Won! – half-hour daily game show produced in collaboration with Hallock Healey Entertainment. Contestants must quickly and accurately guess what prize they have just won.

Alchemy Reality will represent the next three projects in partnership with Irish company Green Inc. Film and TV:

  • It’s Not The Answer – 30m studio quiz show where contestants must be smart and quick to answer questions by a process of elimination.
  • Last Chance To Win – based on the Channel 4 show Last Chance Lottery, this version is a studio-based game where persons who have experienced some bad luck will the chance to win.
  • Buy It, Cook It, Sell It – in this daily cooking competition, two contestants buy fresh produce with a small budget, cook it outdoors in a stall then must sell what they’ve made. The one who makes the most money wins and keeps the money earned.

Correction: A. Smith & Co. is not involved with the new cooking reality show The Chopping Block for NBC produced by Granada America. A. Smith & Co. does co-produce two other cooking reality shows with Granada America, Hell’s Kitchen and Kitchen Nightmares.
